Caught doing 87 on an A road - stupid - what will happen?

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:40

We were on holiday, road was empty and we were rushing to get to a check in.

Just got home and received a scary letter in the post from the police.

I know it was monumentally stupid. Will write back immediately saying yes it was me.

I’ve never had a speeding fine - can’t believe I was so stupid, I never usually speed.

What will they do - will I lose my licence?

The sanctimony on this thread. 🙄 And misinformation.

The OP asked for consequences, not lectures.

She’ll get a £100 fine and 3 points.

I absolute concur.. I got caught doing 86 in a 70 zone and in my letter it had the grades of penalties... I did a speed awareness course but 87 would have meant a fine and points... So 86 is the magic number 🙄

MNdrama · 01/06/2025 00:37

10 pages in. How has no one been asking if they had children in the car at the time? If they did, they don't need their licence revoked, they need imprisoning

That's child endangerment, 100%

Not really, she said the road was empty. Anyway if you crash at 70mph your fucked anyway so an additional 17mph doesn't make much difference

I've never read such moronic judginess on here in such volume, ever.

Answer the op, ffs.

The op knows she did wrong, she's.never done it before.

Any driver commenting has been on roads with a 70mph speed limit before knows that many drivers regularly drive above this.

It is obviously very wrong. Op know this. She has expressed regret and will accept the penalty, which most likely will be 3 penalty points and a fine.

She doesn't need constant berating. What sad little lives some of you lead to keep coming on and saying awful things to op.

She knows it was wrong. Give it a rest.

Moronic judginess? Lmao. When your loved ones are killed by someone driving nearly 20 mph over the limit, please let us know how the responses are moronic / judgemental

AltitudeCheck · 01/06/2025 00:44

The first letter is just to determine who was driving. They need to know who was driving before they can determine if the person is eligible for a speed awareness course. You won't be offered a course if you've already done one in the last few years for example.

Once you confirm you were driving and they see you haven't got any points and haven't been caught speeding recently, aren't currently banned etc they can decide if you are eligible for a course or will get a fixed penalty fine and points.

87mph in a 70, no previous speeding and with no accident or incident is not likely to go to court unless you decline to accept the points / fine. Do make sure you read, complete and return all the letters they send and don't miss any deadlines for responding.

So you're happy driving with your children at 87 mph? Sounds like they're going to be absolute model citizens (if they make it to adulthood)

Wpuldnt say I'm happy but the reality is, as a once off on an empty road it's hardly something to get hysterical about.

THIS.

The most sensible comment in this entire thread, thank you.

So much hysteria over someone getting caught speeding (someone who is remorseful and readily admits it’s wrong). Leading to increasingly more dramatic hypothetical scenarios of what could have happened… but didn’t. Can we move back to the point of the thread now please?!

idonethisthing · 01/06/2025 00:54

It’s not out of order to point out that this was an incredibly stupid and selfish thing to do. The risk just isn’t worth it. I have a close friend who lost a 4 year old child in a car crash caused by someone who was rushing to get somewhere because their thing is just soooooooo important.
I also know someone who lost their own partner and children as a consequence of their own speeding. He’s disabled now.

It’s the law for a very good reason. Don’t flout it and you’ll be fine, it’s really very simple. It saves lives.

It’s not out of order at all… but come on. It’s been done now. Some of these posters’ knickers are in such a twist that they’re in danger of cutting off circulation to their legs at this point

Right! It’s fucking weird how people can defend this, yet just five years ago the same people were probably berating anyone not wearing a mask to go for a walk. They need to seriously have a look in the mirror at themselves. Speeding kills innocent people. And it’s a choice.

Speeding with your children in the car is never okay, even if it's a "once off"

I didn't think the A64 had any fixed speed cameras. I didn't think North Yorkshire had any fixed speed cameras.

Apologies you’re right. I was thinking of the ANPR cameras

Yes, definitely sensible to ignore / condone speeding and hysterical to suggest otherwise

Not all dual carriageways have a central reservation.

Then it isn’t a dual carriageway.

I’ll let my friend know that these are the sage words she should take comfort in next time she visits her preschooler at his graveside. 🤬

Hopefully this shuts down the conversation, probably unlikely though

PurpleFlower1983 · 01/06/2025 01:13

Likely 3 points and £100 fine.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/06/2025 01:16

Wades in with apt user name (and I;ve had it for years )

It was 20% over the speed limit , but how can you know for sure what speed you;re doing as speedometers have a +/- 10% margin of error .
Obvs the SpeedCamera is pretty accurate but that;s not what's on your dashboard .

ViciousCurrentBun · 01/06/2025 01:22

With every mile of speed the chance of serious injury or death are increased if you have an accident.

I am surprised it will probably only be £100 and 3 points, I would have thought £500 and 6 points for that much over would be more appropriate.

For goodness’ sake, let’s all calm ourselves down here. Nobody - or at least very few posters - is condoning speeding. I’m certainly not. I’m just pointing out what the OP has said from the very first post - that they know speeding is wrong, they know that they shouldn’t have done it and they have presumably learned their lesson.

Speeding is not ok, it’s dangerous and can have horrendous consequences which everyone agrees on and some of you have sadly experienced.

Do the self righteous responses change the situation the OP is in? Nope. Somewhere along the line the point of the thread has been lost and it’s grown rather hysterical arms and legs which isn’t helping anyone, in fact it seems to be raising the blood pressure of a few of you to rather dangerous levels.

Chariots77 · 01/06/2025 01:34

Won't you get a speed awareness course? I was caught doing similar (maybe slightly less) on an empty dual carriageway years ago. Best thing I've done, it really stuck with me and I've not broke the limit since. So much better than 3 points, in terms of future prevention imo

Oh that’s useful, thanks. There’s a dead child on the tarmac, was your speedometer accurately registering? Oh…..well that’s okay then, have a good evening. Just side step the body, thank you kindly. 👋

If you’re driving in an area where you could possibly encounter a hazard like a pedestrian….slow the fuck down. A decent driver knows when they are exceeding their reaction limit. And most people over estimate.

STFU.

Whwn you’ve had to sit through the funeral of a child who has 3 weeks past his third birthday and listen to his parents audibly sob when the church filled with music and they showed a collage of videos and photos of his short life. When you know that poor baby and his unsurvivable injuries due to some idiots need to get to work ten minutes earlier. Then you can have your say.

For Goodness Sake indeed. 🤡

Pardon me for bothering to write something that is a fact .
Up thread there's a post that 86MPH is a Fine+ Points but 87MPH is higher penalty

If your speedometer is 10% out as they are then that can mean a 7mph difference ,

A pedestrian on an A Road is the least likely hazard .
Debris , broken down car , pot hole much more likely
But I don;t see why I'm bothering to give a reasonable reply here
