… Deborah, Annabel too.

Was your name inspired by a song?

Growing up, one of my friends hated her name ‘Kayleigh’ as everyone (it seemed) would think it was hilarious and oh so original to sing the Marillion track at her.

Currently, one of DC’s best friends is called Ruby, but loves her name and doesn’t give two 💩 when people start “going all Kaiser Chiefs” (their words; teen speak) on her!

On a G&S theme:
When a friend told me they were using the name Phoebe, my mind replied with "Phoebe, who may she be?".
Although the only female name I can think offhand of from the songs is Buttercup ("I'm called little Buttercup") and I'm guessing it's not that! 😁

I had a friend who was Cecilia and had to endure various people singing the Paul Simon song "Cecilia, you're breaking my heart". She started introducing herself as "Cecily" to avoid that.

As far as I'm aware my name was never used in a song.

I think PPs name is from a Gilbert O’Sullivan song - not from a Gilbert and Sullivan one (which, as you say, would definitely be unusual…)

My name was fine until it featured in a song. I was 15 when it was played at the school disco and everyone sang it to me. 🙄

Clue: name changed for this.

Edited

Julie :)

Yes, Lydia, from a song around that time and a tv show apparently..mum wanted to call me Emma Louise, which I so wished for as a child, as Lydia was rarer back then. Now i’m glad of it

My name comes from a Gilbert O’Sullivan song and yes it is still occasionally sung to me by people of a certain age 😄

I think I share your name 😆

Inspired by a song, repeated throughout the years by multiple singers.

Mary?

A song that featured my name a lot was released when I was a young baby.
Apparently my mother really did not like it when people assumed my name was inspired by the song.

Friends of my parents called their daughter Lenore, before the detergent existed. But only about 2 years.

My name isn't from a song but I did have a cat called Claudia named after a song by The Dammed, but not the title.

I think I'm the wrong age to have had many others with my name. There's also the very wistful theme from the 1940s film but as far as I can remember that's about a dead woman 😆

Great film. Will say no more as it would be a spoiler, but you sound like you've only seen the beginning. Lovely name, btw.

I knew someone who’d called their son Carter… and all I could think of was that 1990s band name Carter the Unstoppable sex machine (poor sod - hope it’s out of common memory by the time grows up)

My sister was named after the song Claire. I was named after a famous singer

Although I'm not named after a song, my name does crop up in many spanning several decades. For reasons I've yet to fathom almost all the artists that have used the name are from the Manchester area.

No. My sister wasn't named for a song either but several years later George Benson sang about her name. As a teenager a boy stood outside the house and sang it to her window, she wasn't impressed.

There was a brief attempt to give her the same abbreviation of the name as a famous female rock star which she shot down pretty quickly

At every family party growing up the “name song” got played as if it was a joyous, happy party song & not a sad one about young lovers & how he died trying to make enough money to buy her an engagement & died in the process. It used to make me cry. Not as well known nowadays i think although scissor sisters have released one as well. I bloodu hate the name!

Tell Laura I Love Her?

My ex loved those dire death songs.

FloweryCactus · 31/05/2025 09:23

I wanted to use Jude if we'd had a boy but "Hey Jude" was one of the main things that put us off.
In the end we only had girls anyway.

He used to bellow it out when driving. He actually had a reasonable voice and had heard loads of 50s & early 60s music through his Mum, but I'd want to shrivel up and disappear when we'd hit traffic lights just as the chorus was coming, as he'd make random people waiting to cross or walking along jump out of their skin.
