… Deborah, Annabel too.

Was your name inspired by a song?

Growing up, one of my friends hated her name ‘Kayleigh’ as everyone (it seemed) would think it was hilarious and oh so original to sing the Marillion track at her.

Currently, one of DC’s best friends is called Ruby, but loves her name and doesn’t give two 💩 when people start “going all Kaiser Chiefs” (their words; teen speak) on her!

Feel like I'm playing this game on my own 😂

Sorry @ScribbblyGum I hadn’t realised this has turned into guess my name thread 😂

Got distracted by teenage DCs drama of the “She looked at me funny!” and “He breathed!” type 🙄🙄

Neither of them are named for songs, unless there’s one called ‘Shit-For-Brains’? 🤔

I wasn't named after a song, but there was a reaaaally annoying song that featured my (extremely common in my generation but I don't think it's been mentioned yet on) name, that old men used to sing at me when I was too young to tell them to f off. Then the Scissor Sisters had their 5 minutes of fame and finally there was a (relatively) cool song to sing with my name...

Snap!

boringingoring · 30/05/2025 22:13

I think I'm the wrong age to have had many others with my name. There's also the very wistful theme from the 1940s film but as far as I can remember that's about a dead woman 😆

Kissedbyfire1 · 30/05/2025 22:16

@shellyleppard Is that you dear Prudence?

Not named after a song but used to play a song with my name in it on the jukebox in pub when I was little.

But I do wonder how many Stacey's there are named after the song?

Has your mum got it going on?

Mine too! Was soooo annoying! Every time I turned round cos someone said my name they'd be saying "not YOU!"

someone shouted it at the school gates the other dates - me and about 4 others all turned round & it was a dad shouting his daughter….in p2. First i’ve seen a “young person” with it in a looooonnng time as most are middle aged like me! Appologies if you’re an unlucky young person 🤣

My nickname is a famous song by Barry Manilow, a song by The Kinks & was also featured in the movie ‘Kinky Boots’ !

Doggymummar · 30/05/2025 22:34

I'm named for the song that was no 1 the day I was born. My parents were expecting a boy so didn't have any girls names picked. I was supposed to be Jason

Canshehavewaferthinham · 30/05/2025 18:46

I wasn't named after it but once they'd decided on the name, my parents were pleased that It's also referenced in a Gordon Lightfoot song.

Hello Edmund!

Tulipsontoast · 30/05/2025 22:40

Inspired by a song, repeated throughout the years by multiple singers.

My DD's name is from a Cocteau Twins song

I'll try and guess this one....the most obvious would be Phoebe?

I was named after a artist who sang the power of love.

Huey Lewis?

Ddakji · 30/05/2025 23:02

I’m working with a freelancer called Deborah and we all can’t help but refer to her as “Deborah - Deb-or-ah” a la Pulp.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/05/2025 23:02

I am named after a character in a book.

I know an Emily (see Emily Play - Pink Floyd), Eloise (The Dammed), Rhiannon (Fleetwood Mac) and Eleanor (Eleanor Rigby) named after songs. As you can see, I'm quite old!

I wished I had done this! I am assuming a name from the album Treasure.

BeaTwix · 30/05/2025 23:07

Thread has moved on a bit but my name features in a well known scottish children's folk song.

Fortunately I've lived in England for more than 20 years and people down here don't know it so no-one ever sings it to me. One of my colleagues loves to mimic my accent (also annoying) and I just know he would sing it so I'm praying no one ever mentions it to him.

I work in paediatrics so children's songs feature more than would be usual in a workplace. Fellow scots may sympathise that I gave myself the earworm of little bunny fou fou last week as I had a small patient who screamed every time I stoped singing (usually people scream when I start!).

Yes, Donimo was a big mistake as everyone spells it wrong...

Funnily enough, if it had just been my choice then DD may well have been called Persephone - both Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance with that one. But DP wasn't keen and to be fair it wouldn't have worked well with her surname. In the end DP suggested Alice which I really liked as well as being a delightful Cocteau Twins b-side.

I have an Eleanor after Eleanor Rigby. Her generation won’t have a clue. When I suggested the name to DH he proudly told me it was the name of the car in Gone in 60 seconds.

Me too! However when she was born her grandparents immediately started singing Lady Eleanor by Lindisfarne - also a pretty cool song to be fair.

My sister is named after a pretty word in one of the Schubert lieder. Turns out it means fishing rods

Could be worse, her name could have been Forelle...
I really hope her name is Angel and not Rute 😅 and that she doesn't get too annoyed by the Samsung washing machine song.

I was hoping for Frou-Frou tbh

My niece is name after the car 😬

Gordonisamoronagain · 30/05/2025 23:44

My name was fine until it featured in a song. I was 15 when it was played at the school disco and everyone sang it to me. 🙄

Clue: name changed for this.

Claire?

Gilbert spelt it Clair! One of the more unusual spellings 😄
