Really M&S !!!

Bransdalelass · 29/05/2025 16:37

Have felt incredibly supportive of M&S through their Cyber incident.

Despite the lack of stock in store for weeks now, my account details being compromised, my M&S credit card (only ever used in M&S or on their website) being used fraudulently and the poor communication, I have remained totally loyal.

Until today !!!

I am shocked at the numerous, price increases across the Foodhall. Fish Pie up from £6 to £7. Prawn Thermidor a similar increase, 10p a loaf on my normal bread, Blueberries up by 25p etc.etc.

I am shocked that they are clearly planning to pass all their losses onto their customers in this way and even more shocked that they are doing it whilst we are still having to cope with their ongoing stock shortages etc.

Am I alone in feeling aggrieved? I feel quite strongly that the losses caused by this incident should be borne by their reserves & shareholders.

Regardless, my shopping next week will be with Waitrose, Sainsburys or Aldi. All stores within 1/2 mile of M&S. This customer will not be returning and their loss will not just be my regular food shop, but also the cosmetics, clothes etc I have historically always picked up in-store at the same time.

I shopped in M&S Food today, and the stock levels are improving. I didn't look at the prices, but I spent roughly the same as usual.
They do need their their customers support to recover, so I will keep shopping there.

I notices Tesco have some price increases recently. What do I blame that on?

londongirl12 · 29/05/2025 16:42

Prices are going up everywhere. I had a small bag of shopping today from Aldi that was £30! Maybe check the price increase of all supermarkets before you go bashing m&s.

I'm very upset that I haven't been able to get gold teabags for weeks. It's unforgivable. I'll be even more aggrieved if they put the price up when they do manage to get them back on the shelves!

SheilaFentiman · 29/05/2025 17:00

Possibly more down to the general fuckwittage of US tariffs causing uncertainty in the world economy than M+S's very recent woes.

Iheartmysmart · 29/05/2025 17:04

I went in to my local M&S a couple of weeks ago and picked up an item which had a yellow sticker on it. The sticker price was 50p more than it was originally. The shelves are really decimated though and there are lots of empty spaces.

Can I come and Live with you, your life sounds amazing 😅🥰

Thank you OP, your sentiments mirror mine. I shopped in M&S food hall today and I too was shocked at the obvious price hikes. I believe M&S no longer have the best interests of their customers at heart. Moving forward I will not be shopping there either.

crazycatladie · 29/05/2025 17:16

i noticed the price increases yesterday, I put a few things back.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 29/05/2025 17:22

What do you expect them to do? Go out of business?

When have they ever had the customers best interest at heart? The supermarkets are all there to make a profit. I have no loyalty to any of them, and expect none in return.

Berlinwanderer · 29/05/2025 17:30

Tbf I’ve not forgiven them for shutting the only remaining dept store in our large town. (>300k). Council begged them not to knowing that it would have a huge effect on the rest of retail here but essentially it’s just about profits like others have said. Have even shafted the council over the building which is still stood there, empty after two years.

Cambridgegirl90 · 29/05/2025 17:30

OP, I couldn’t agree more. I too have remained supportive to them during the recent months, continuing to shop there despite widespread availability issues . Yet I was absolutely staggered by the price increases when I visited at the weekend and I have to admit that I have now decided to change back to other grocery stores .
Its such a shame as I was willing them to recover from the recent trauma.

Bransdalelass · 29/05/2025 17:34

No @ChocolateCinderToffee I don’t expect them to go out of business.

But it has been reported (who knows what the truth is) that the issue was caused by them employing a rogue Contractor who was allowed to work his mayhem in their systems for weeks before they recognised the issue.

I assume they have Business Interruption Insurance to cover their losses and that their reserves and Shareholders will pick up the rest.

I have been loyal and coped with all the issues they have caused, but I think it is totally wrong that the costs are passed to customers in this way.

I also shopped in Sainsburys today and noticed very little change in the prices of things I normally buy. M&S prices have been creeping up since Christmas but today the increases were large - 17% on a Fish Pie !! and numerous.

It’s all gone up again. Something I have bought for ages from Aldi for 75p, then 79p is now 99p. I’m not buying it again as I can get a branded item for not much more that I prefer. At 79p it was good value, at 99p it isn’t.

This is just one of the examples that I noticed on the last shop, but most things were up. I bet it is not just M&S.

minnienono · 29/05/2025 17:41

Bread is up everywhere, my favourite bread from Lidl had dropped to 1.09 (from 1.29 last year) but it’s back up to 1.29.

vinavine · 29/05/2025 17:43

I was shocked my some prices in Sainsbury's yesterday, food is so expensive now.

SadCarpetMess · 29/05/2025 17:48

The only retailer I make buying decisions about that factor in any sense of loyalty is John Lewis because their workers benefit when their profits are up.

Endiof · 29/05/2025 17:56

It's gone up everywhere, I spend about £150 a week now for two of us, I did notice that some M&S food has always been more expensive at Ocado though. I shall still shop at M&S though as I like the fruit there

TheBig50 · 29/05/2025 17:57

Surely you can't get much of a mouthful from a prawn thermidore.

marshmallowpuff · 29/05/2025 17:58

Everything in Waitrose went up again two weeks ago — by about 25-45p on nearly every item I buy. I suspect it’s not just the cyberincident that’s causing this.

Endiof · 29/05/2025 17:59

There was an article on food inflation being high just this week on the news

INeedAnotherName · 29/05/2025 17:59

How else do you think they are going to pay staff wages? 🤔

Although I did notice a few other supermarkets have upped their prices too.

EDIT
But it has been reported (who knows what the truth is) that the issue was caused by them employing a rogue Contractor who was allowed to work his mayhem in their systems for weeks before they recognised the issue.

Last I heard they employed another company not a single person for IT. This company also does IT work for other big UK companies.

vinavine · 29/05/2025 18:01

How else do you think they are going to pay staff wages?

Perhaps the CEO could have a smaller bonus?!

According to many news sites he's having a 1.1 million hit on his wages. You want sackcloth and ashes too?
