Really M&S !!!

Bransdalelass · 29/05/2025 16:37

Have felt incredibly supportive of M&S through their Cyber incident.

Despite the lack of stock in store for weeks now, my account details being compromised, my M&S credit card (only ever used in M&S or on their website) being used fraudulently and the poor communication, I have remained totally loyal.

Until today !!!

I am shocked at the numerous, price increases across the Foodhall. Fish Pie up from £6 to £7. Prawn Thermidor a similar increase, 10p a loaf on my normal bread, Blueberries up by 25p etc.etc.

I am shocked that they are clearly planning to pass all their losses onto their customers in this way and even more shocked that they are doing it whilst we are still having to cope with their ongoing stock shortages etc.

Am I alone in feeling aggrieved? I feel quite strongly that the losses caused by this incident should be borne by their reserves & shareholders.

Regardless, my shopping next week will be with Waitrose, Sainsburys or Aldi. All stores within 1/2 mile of M&S. This customer will not be returning and their loss will not just be my regular food shop, but also the cosmetics, clothes etc I have historically always picked up in-store at the same time.

Thank you OP, your sentiments mirror mine. I shopped in M&S food hall today and I too was shocked at the obvious price hikes. I believe M&S no longer have the best interests of their customers at heart. Moving forward I will not be shopping there either.

It's not about not having best customer interests at heart. They are struggling themselves. If you don't like to shop there, of course you can go to another business. I hope they don't go out of business.

WombForTwo · 29/05/2025 22:32

I’m just getting sick of no online shopping. It’s not that hard to bring it back

justasking111 · 29/05/2025 22:36

Their roast pork joint with crackling I bought a few times over the winter. Cooked in the air fryer was incredible. Ditto their steak. Love their cheese selection. Their lavender fabric spray great on the sofas and on the bedding.

It's not my main shop but I do enjoy going there.

When have they ever had the customers best interest at heart? The supermarkets are all there to make a profit. I have no loyalty to any of them, and expect none in return.

All businesses are there to make profit. All busineses pay their suppliers, staff, rent, overheads, etc.
M&S is not making very high profits anyways. It's not amazon, who may appear to have best customer interest but in reality exploiting staff and suppliers to gain market share while damaging local businesses.

It's still not safe for you to do this. It would be irresponsible of them and would negate their insurance.

I noticed my usual groceries in Tesco have all gone up, extra 30p on apple juice, own brand sourfaux 30 up etc. Who am I’m to disrupt their £2billion annual profit though.

I’ve just done my Tesco order for tomorrow and a number of items have increased by 10p, 20p, 30p.
It’s never just a penny or two is it?!

Lilactimes · 29/05/2025 22:40

I have just rediscovered M&S clothes this season after decades of not shopping there.
They’ve got some really great pieces so will def be supporting them.
Hope they manage to sort things soon- must be a difficult time.

@ItsonlypantsandsocksM&S, like all the other main supermarkets, is a for profit business, a PLC which answers to its shareholders. As base costs rise, retail costs rise. These are for profit businesses, not social enterprises. If you have a problem with the cost of living issue, that is an issue for parliament, not a criticism to level at PLCs who have to make profit.

Exactly. And every time a big business close down, thousands of people lose their income.
I no longer live in the UK but travel back often, prices in the US and where I live in Europe are much higher but so are wages. People should demand better salaries. Salaries are stagnated for so long. We want to come back to UK but, we have to take such big hit in income, it makes no sense. Higher skilled professionals are leaving UK because salaries are so low even for senior jobs and then half goes in taxes, which lead to no positive change in infrastructure or anything.

@SheilaFentiman I was being facetious but why should the customer always have to pay? It's like the water company fines, the cost will just get passed on to customers but everyone is ok with it.

It's called capitalism.

someoneseatenmyapple · 29/05/2025 23:06

Waitrose have recently hiked their prices. A pack of 5% mince is now an eye watering £7.90!

LogicalBlodge · 29/05/2025 23:09

I think some of this was price hikes with inflation anyway - I was expecting another hit.

I can't afford Waitrose anymore. Middle class worries I know but just inconvenient as I live opposite one 😅

I would rather all the big supermarkets closed down and we go back to little local grocers shops, greengrocers, butchers, fishmongers, haberdashers etc.

Cardtrouble · 29/05/2025 23:15

Op it's interesting to hear your card has been used fraudulently because mine has too. I'm sure it's from the m&s hack. I'm being refunded for the amount taken but it's caused a huge inconvenience having my card cancelled

'I didn't look at the prices'

Can I come and Live with you, your life sounds amazing 😅🥰

Not amazing at all, but if I need something then I buy it. And on the odd occasion I do look at prices, I never remember them, so I wouldn't know whether they had gone up or not 🤷‍♀️😂

Really? Given the massive daily losses, you don't think M & S are doing everything possible to get back online safely? If it is so easy, perhaps you should offer your expertise.

Not possible, though.

Bransdalelass · 29/05/2025 23:27

@Cardtrouble

i too was convinced it was from the M&S cyber issue.

It was an M&S CC and had only ever been used in M&S stores and for buying from M&S online.

Suddenly about 10 days after the cyber attack it was hit with a load of small Amazon purchases.

When I reported it, they didn’t hesitate. It was cancelled, reissued with all new Pin’s etc and all the fraudulent transactions immediately refunded.

Time to visit all the individual shops.
Carrying increasingly heavy bags from shop to shop or multiple visits
Queueing in every shop
Car park prices
A more restricted choice

And, for many people, the ability to do a big shop online is an absolute lifesaver. For the disabled, elderly, unwell, unable to drive, etc., etc, online supermarket shopping helps so many retain their independance

Mines the same, all small amazon purchases! My bank flagged it before I did, mine isn't a m&s cc

Bugger I buy kindle books from Amazon so don't query small amounts. But doesn't that mean they've set up another account using the same card? I'm surprised Amazon haven't alerted customers.

My card was cloned at a petrol station. Four flights to Spain, a weeks holiday, , lots of nice shopping and eating out. Nearly 4k gone. I was stunned. Barclaycard were brilliant, full refund.

For the bank to have flagged it, they must be aware. I have an amazon account, so wouldn't question a small purchase. Mine happened this week.
The fact it's not been a typical fraud I.e big spending, cashback etc made me think straight away that this is the m&s hack. It's caused inconvenience, which is what the hackers wanted.
I'm sorry that happened to you and glad you got it sorted.

You do realise all of their IT systems were hacked and encrypted so they can't access them. They have to rebuild all of the hacked systems again and make sure they are 100% resilient to another attack before they let customers anywhere near with their personal details. This isn't a quick fix. I'm sure some people think they were hacked then got control back a few days later. If they could bring back online shopping quickly they would. This attack is the stuff of nightmares for anyone who works in IT. There is no quick fix. If there was the hackers wouldn't do what they do.
