Really M&S !!!

Bransdalelass · 29/05/2025 16:37

Have felt incredibly supportive of M&S through their Cyber incident.

Despite the lack of stock in store for weeks now, my account details being compromised, my M&S credit card (only ever used in M&S or on their website) being used fraudulently and the poor communication, I have remained totally loyal.

Until today !!!

I am shocked at the numerous, price increases across the Foodhall. Fish Pie up from £6 to £7. Prawn Thermidor a similar increase, 10p a loaf on my normal bread, Blueberries up by 25p etc.etc.

I am shocked that they are clearly planning to pass all their losses onto their customers in this way and even more shocked that they are doing it whilst we are still having to cope with their ongoing stock shortages etc.

Am I alone in feeling aggrieved? I feel quite strongly that the losses caused by this incident should be borne by their reserves & shareholders.

Regardless, my shopping next week will be with Waitrose, Sainsburys or Aldi. All stores within 1/2 mile of M&S. This customer will not be returning and their loss will not just be my regular food shop, but also the cosmetics, clothes etc I have historically always picked up in-store at the same time.

Maybe they could close all the stores but keep the mini-food shops they have at petrol stations. Hmm
Or just sell everything and let Percy Pig and Colin the Caterpillar become just a cherished memory. Sad

Long live Marksies!

Does anyone know who these hackers were or where they live or which country they come from ?
Surely it’s a criminal act and someone must know something.
I caught the tale end of a conversation with a man on lbc who said it was an organized gang of people, but nothing much else. Was it the same ones who targeted the co op? Very scary that every app we have can be compromised and how they can hold these companies to account like this , blackmail and extortion. Do they get jobs in IT first with the company in order to find out how it operates? Someone must know something , but it’s all probably kept under wraps a lot?
As for prices, they are not going down any time soon sadly.

They know who the hacking group is, they've claimed responsibility. They don't have to work at the companies they just know IT, how to get into the systems and encrypt them effectively locking the company out of their own systems. They think the hackers got the details of an employee which is easily done and then rang the service desk for a password reset which then gets them into the systems. They then have scripts then can run which tries different passwords for the other systems and tests for vulnerabilities until they get in more and more systems. They were doing this for months undetected. Co-op had the same but noticed the attempts and they stopped the hackers by literally pulling the plugs out of the servers. It's scary how vulnerable we all are to these and other hacker. Keeps my husband in a job though. I work for a bank and we get hundreds of thousands of hacking attempts a month.

Our neighbour works in IT preventing hacks on gambling sites. Another person we know does it for a banking group. It's a continual onslaught.

@the80sweregreat, Do they get jobs in IT first with the company in order to find out how it operates? Possibly but not probably. They'll know how such systems work and where any weak spots might be.

Anyone can be hacked, but there are things that organisations and individuals can do to make it less likely to happen.

piscofrisco · 31/05/2025 06:50

Food is just ridiculously expensive now everywhere. I used to be able to feed four of us plus two dogs and a cat on £80 a week with some decent meal planning. (I know this as I found one of my old planners yesterday and was both agog at the prices of things in 2018 compared to now and in awe of my younger self’s organisational skills which seem to have disappeared of late). I went to Tesco yesterday and did a shop for four of us plus animals-£166 and I will probably have to top up before the week is out.

Closing forever over a cyber attack is quite dramatic. Their physical stores are still in operation!!

Wow. Do you feel powerful? 😂😂😂

It’s not about the customer feeling powerful, it’s about the customer managing their finances and shopping where their money may go further.

PickAChew · 31/05/2025 12:32

It's thought that the weak point for both M&S and Coop might be Tata, who contract for them.

I can't believe the amount of posters who are angry at M&S for this. Yes they made mistakes but this could and does happen to other companies. It's not like they have decided to take ages going back to normal just to annoy their customers.

MidnightMeltdown · 31/05/2025 14:01

I was fully expecting clothing prices to go up to account for the losses.

I think there will be a huge sale in clothes come July, to try and shift the stock they've had sitting there since the attack.

I think autumn prices will be higher. The prices for summer stock are on their website already and if people are charged more at the till than the price on the label then they will moan.

the80sweregreat · 31/05/2025 15:08

Yes, jumpers , coats and so on are always on the pricy side and bound to go up again this year.

Simply exerting consumer choice. As we all do.

M&S don’t share their profits with me, why should I pay increased prices to compensate for the costs of this issue. I am assuming they have Insurance and Reserves, that should be the first place they look too to cover these losses. That and the Shareholders who happily receive profits year on year. If after those resources are depleted they end up having to increase prices, so be it.

But I will still make the decision as to where I choose to shop.

I think the comments on here about price rises across the whole Supermarket sector are interesting, and I will. be fascinated to see how these play out in Inflation figures over the next few months

Our local M&S closed a while back - not due to lack of profit, the shop was making money - but because the building needed work and they would not invest in it. After many years in the town, they shut the doors with not even a closing down sale for the loyal customers just put a notice in the window that the store was closed, "Thank You and Good-bye". I now have as much loyalty to them as they had for us.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 31/05/2025 21:09

I'm not cross with M&S, I'm furious with the hackers that do these things!

They wouldn't need a closing down sale though as they have other branches, the stock would just go there. At the end of the day they are a business.

To be honest we are all hyped up as a new M&S out of town food hall is opening up near us. The nearest M&S is in the town and you have to pay for parking so this is great news, can't wait for it to open

the80sweregreat · 01/06/2025 17:10

I saw an advert for M and S and at the end it said ‘ shop in store ‘ ! It made me smile because that’s what’s been going on for decades ( well, for the ones they still kept going that is )

Our new one went onto a retail park in the old Debenhams unit. It's been a roaring success. Other stores have benefited from the footfall. The old one was in town 45 minutes free parking which meant you didn't have time to visit other shops if you were going there and you had to schlep back to the car with the bags or go round to the back entrance to collect your shopping.

We have one in a sort of retail park with a Home Bargains next door 12 miles away and the car park is always rammed. This new one will be 7 miles away but I expect it will also be rammed as well but won't be so far and there is a wonderful garden centre which will be on my way home so win win

I think loyalty is misplaced with any gigantic corporation....they don't give a flying rats twat about any of us!!!
