Really M&S !!!

Bransdalelass · 29/05/2025 16:37

Have felt incredibly supportive of M&S through their Cyber incident.

Despite the lack of stock in store for weeks now, my account details being compromised, my M&S credit card (only ever used in M&S or on their website) being used fraudulently and the poor communication, I have remained totally loyal.

Until today !!!

I am shocked at the numerous, price increases across the Foodhall. Fish Pie up from £6 to £7. Prawn Thermidor a similar increase, 10p a loaf on my normal bread, Blueberries up by 25p etc.etc.

I am shocked that they are clearly planning to pass all their losses onto their customers in this way and even more shocked that they are doing it whilst we are still having to cope with their ongoing stock shortages etc.

Am I alone in feeling aggrieved? I feel quite strongly that the losses caused by this incident should be borne by their reserves & shareholders.

Regardless, my shopping next week will be with Waitrose, Sainsburys or Aldi. All stores within 1/2 mile of M&S. This customer will not be returning and their loss will not just be my regular food shop, but also the cosmetics, clothes etc I have historically always picked up in-store at the same time.

Prices are going up everywhere. I had a small bag of shopping today from Aldi that was £30! Maybe check the price increase of all supermarkets before you go bashing m&s.

The OJ I buy in Aldi seems to be 10p dearer every time I go!

Strange how M&S are literally the ONLY shop with price increases recently isn’t it…oh, wait, never mind.

Some things that we really like, I still buy from M&S - I look for yellow stickers on meat and freeze on the day. I love their chocolate custard creams (£3 for 6) but saw them in our little shop for £3.50!! Really silly money 😒😒😒

Elektra1 · 29/05/2025 21:29

@ItsonlypantsandsocksM&S, like all the other main supermarkets, is a for profit business, a PLC which answers to its shareholders. As base costs rise, retail costs rise. These are for profit businesses, not social enterprises. If you have a problem with the cost of living issue, that is an issue for parliament, not a criticism to level at PLCs who have to make profit.

Bransdalelass · 29/05/2025 21:37

@UpMyself have been here for years, but regularly name change

It’s all gone up again. Something I have bought for ages from Aldi for 75p, then 79p is now 99p. I’m not buying it again as I can get a branded item for not much more that I prefer. At 79p it was good value, at 99p it isn’t.

This is just one of the examples that I noticed on the last shop, but most things were up. I bet it is not just M&S.

Lidl has also hiked prices considerably recently. They've also changed fresh meat suppliers. The chicken has improved, lamb worsened.

Co-op are limping along stock levels have improved but it's still difficult a staff member told me today. The car park has loads of empty spaces which is very unusual, shoppers have found somewhere else.

M&S here is on a big retail park which benefits all the stores there, the knock on effect must be hurting them all.

Bransdalelass · 29/05/2025 21:46

Interesting insights re price increases across the board.

The majority of my shop is normally Sainsburys / Lidl / Aldi and mostly fruit / veg / dairy. I use M&S for some fruit, cheese, fish & GF bread. Very little else.

To be honest I have not really experienced massive price increases over the last two months except in M&S. Maybe that's the nature of what I am buying

Or hit their share holders and make less profit?

OH they will hit their shareholders (who btw are also pension fund groups) bloody hackers.

I notices Tesco have some price increases recently. What do I blame that on?

Every time a mumsnetter quotes the opening post, Tesco raise an item's price by 10p. Wink

Are you my MIL? She doesn't look at the price of things either.

Are your diamond shoes too tight too @Bransdalelass ?

I went in to my local M&S a couple of weeks ago and picked up an item which had a yellow sticker on it. The sticker price was 50p more than it was originally. The shelves are really decimated though and there are lots of empty spaces.

The yellow stickers have become really random. They’ve changed to general ones so rather than work out a percentage discount they whack a discount sticker on do a £12.50 item became £10 but an £8.75 cake went down to £8 something that was 2.79 went down 4p to 2.75. I suspect it saves money/ time but I’m not buying same day stuff without a minimum 30% discount.

Azureshores · 29/05/2025 19:57

Is this a joke? 😂

Isn’t she just lightheartedly saying she misses a specific product? Are we shaming people for buying M&S teabags? I’m guessing not, because that would be really weird.

Gettingbysomehow · 29/05/2025 21:53

I was in M and S Yeovil today and it was pretty awful. The stock looked like outlet store stock. I never buy their food it's astronomical and poor value. A very tiny .ready meal for one marked as a meal for two and priced as a meal for 2. I'd prefer Waitrose any day.

justasking111 · 29/05/2025 21:57

Reading the most recent announcement by M&S. They've said that they'll be up and running sometime in July. Losses 300m a third of their annual profit. It's bad. There's suppliers who will fail I suspect unless they've find alternative buyers PDQ.

UpMyself · 29/05/2025 22:00

@Gettingbysomehow , M&S food is not poor value, which you'd know if you bought it.

OldTiredMum1976 · 29/05/2025 22:01

I’m more pissed off that ordering online STiLL
isnt back yet! Christ on a bike, how long do they need to get it sorted! I wouldn’t mind if I could pop in and buy the things I need straight off the shelf but their uniform selection is woeful in store. I’ve picked up some bits from Next and Asda nd bee pleased with them. M&S have lost my uniform order going forward. I expect this will happen with a lot of people.

Scarydinosaurs · 29/05/2025 22:04

I went this week and noticed a box of biscuits had gone down by £1.

I love M&S and am going to use them more as if they go under I would genuinely be sad.

I used to buy it daily. I stopped about 6 months ago.

Shufflebumnessie · 29/05/2025 22:11

I don't buy much in M&S but I do regularly buy the same few items. I noticed last week that all the prices of the items I buy had gone up and assumed it was to do with what's been happening. I appreciate they want to recoup their losses but it felt really poor timing to do it whilst their shelves are still partially stocked and yet customers are staying loyal.

MintChocCat · 29/05/2025 22:13

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 29/05/2025 16:48

I'm very upset that I haven't been able to get gold teabags for weeks. It's unforgivable. I'll be even more aggrieved if they put the price up when they do manage to get them back on the shelves!

OonaStubbs · 29/05/2025 22:15

Supermarkets are really taking the piss now with prices.

WhitegreeNcandle · 29/05/2025 22:16

It’s not just M&S. I’ve been wanging on about this since the budget.

Im a farmer that sells something most people will put in their weekly shop. We are on a contract with the supermarkets that when our costs go up so does the price we get paid. Works in the opposite direction too. A fixed margin if you will. A pretty fair deal for farmers. Our wage costs have gone up tremendously as have the supermarkets with the min wage increases. This is the result.

Bread should really not be going up the way it is with wheat at £160 a ton - it’s the electric, wages, diesel for transport I think.

It’s nuts really.

whats even more nuts is that farmers who supply the co op were told they didn’t want their product. Well, we can’t really stockpile it or stop producing it at such short notice so most have found alternative markets and won’t touch the co op with a barge pole (or a better contract) again. Utterly ridiculous they couldn’t get it to the shops.

Cynic17 · 29/05/2025 16:40

I shopped in M&S Food today, and the stock levels are improving. I didn't look at the prices, but I spent roughly the same as usual.
They do need their their customers support to recover, so I will keep shopping there.

What...the Marks and Spencer that says that men can go in the women's changing rooms? The M&S that made their female staff measure men for bra fittings? We owe them sweet FA. Karma smells good.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 29/05/2025 22:29

Ah, but that "Best ever fish pie" is worth every penny.
