Really M&S !!!

Bransdalelass · 29/05/2025 16:37

Have felt incredibly supportive of M&S through their Cyber incident.

Despite the lack of stock in store for weeks now, my account details being compromised, my M&S credit card (only ever used in M&S or on their website) being used fraudulently and the poor communication, I have remained totally loyal.

Until today !!!

I am shocked at the numerous, price increases across the Foodhall. Fish Pie up from £6 to £7. Prawn Thermidor a similar increase, 10p a loaf on my normal bread, Blueberries up by 25p etc.etc.

I am shocked that they are clearly planning to pass all their losses onto their customers in this way and even more shocked that they are doing it whilst we are still having to cope with their ongoing stock shortages etc.

Am I alone in feeling aggrieved? I feel quite strongly that the losses caused by this incident should be borne by their reserves & shareholders.

Regardless, my shopping next week will be with Waitrose, Sainsburys or Aldi. All stores within 1/2 mile of M&S. This customer will not be returning and their loss will not just be my regular food shop, but also the cosmetics, clothes etc I have historically always picked up in-store at the same time.

Didn't he get nearly 5m last year - I'm sure he will be ok!

If a company mucks up why shouldn't the head honcho feel it?

M+S employs 70-80,000 people - cutting one person's bonus won't cover NI and minimum wage increases by itself.

I shopped in M&S Food today, and the stock levels are improving. I didn't look at the prices, but I spent roughly the same as usual.
They do need their their customers support to recover, so I will keep shopping there.

Are you my MIL? She doesn't look at the price of things either.

Are your diamond shoes too tight too @Bransdalelass ?

I have Ocado shop. The milk was 6.80 for 6. Then went to 7.80. No way. It popped up on my page and is now over 8 pound. Bet some of this long life milk been in storage for ages. Things will have to change when I change jobs in September

MidnightMusing5 · 29/05/2025 18:11

As much as I would love to criticise m and s, I have noticed price increases in a few other supermarkets recently (I shop mainly Sainsbury’s, occasionally Morrisons and just plain yog from Lidl and emergency top ups) where the price increase had been two weeks in a row(!)

went into Costco today a lot of stock was missing , and a few bits they told me they no longer were stocking which annoyed me (a lot)

im not sure why though 🤔

vinavine · 29/05/2025 18:15

@SheilaFentiman I was being facetious but why should the customer always have to pay? It's like the water company fines, the cost will just get passed on to customers but everyone is ok with it.

BunnyEaster · 29/05/2025 18:15

I bought three bags of very basic brand food in Lidl this week for £56. Four bags of cheap crap mostly reduced in Asda for £98. I could feed all six of us for £70 a week two years ago at a push. Food continues to spiral. It's not just m&s

Whattodo1610 · 29/05/2025 18:15

I think you’re wrong OP, I don’t think the increases are a result of their cyber attack - prices have shot up massively in all supermarkets in the past month or more. I’m genuinely shocked when I’m shopping and see the difference from only a few weeks ago, there’s lots I now don’t buy. 😟

Coffeeishot · 29/05/2025 18:19

Morrisons food has jumped up I was about £5 more on my midweek top up yesterday. I don't think M&S are racking up prices to compensate.

PickAChew · 29/05/2025 18:20

Waitrose prices have gone up, too. And Sainsbury's.

Gazelda · 29/05/2025 18:22

I have noticed stark price rises at other supermarkets. I don’t think it’s just M&S increasing their prices.

i think it’s unfair to criticise on this issue when you haven’t considered if it’s a cross-sector trend.

global issues, huge increases in staffing cost and skyrocketing cyber insurance fees will all be having a big impact.

Bransdalelass · 29/05/2025 18:22

@TourangaLeila

My whole point was around the fact that I do need to look at prices and am shocked at the increases.

No diamond shoes here but feel free to send any spares from your wardrobe !!

Errr, because the customer provides the only income? So if wages rise or cost of importing ingredients rise or utility bills for shops rise or whatever, then prices rise.

DancingFerret · 29/05/2025 18:30

Possibly the other factor affecting prices is the increase in NI and the national minimum wage which kicked in last month.

MarySueSaidBoo · 29/05/2025 18:30

Our Waitrose shop was about £15 more than usual this week, and we don't drink so no luxuries or non food items on there. We're spending for 2 of us what we used to spend on 4 when our DC were at home!

Vaxtable · 29/05/2025 18:31

Prices are going up everywhere.

abnerbrownsdressinggown · 29/05/2025 18:33

Our food shop (not M&S) was up significantly last month - I'm assuming a combination of general food price inflation plus whacking on a bit to cover the extra NI. It's definitely not just M&S.

Elektra1 · 29/05/2025 18:33

M&S is losing £40m a WEEK as a result of this cyber attack. I doubt 10p on a loaf of bread or £1 on a fish pie is going to rectify the position. As others have said, prices are going up across the board for other reasons.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 29/05/2025 18:33

The price increase happened a few weeks ago OP.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 29/05/2025 18:34

I was surprised at the high prices in Morrison's today.

I'm not sure that M&S food prices can be entirely related to the cyber attack.

the80sweregreat · 29/05/2025 18:37

Every week there is an increase in prices everywhere , it is getting harder to do a shop and keep the prices lower without just cutting out anything nice / wine / treats etc
How big families manage is beyond me.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 29/05/2025 18:37

Did you ever stop to think that the price increase corresponds to the increase in national insurance and minimum wage. Nothing to do with the cyber attack. Sainsburys have similarly increased their prices as have other stores.

You can thank our incompetent government for that. Not M&S or the cyber attack.

Fantasticfrollics · 29/05/2025 18:43

I work for a food company. M&S increases have nothing to do with the cyber attacks!!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 29/05/2025 17:22

What do you expect them to do? Go out of business?

Did you even read the post?
OP literally specified what she expected them to do - use their reserves or cut their shareholder's profits. 🙄

It's their fault as an organisation they didn't have sufficiently robust security measures, of course they should make up the losses, not pass it on to their consumers. If anything it would be nice if they gave their customers some sort of thank you for sticking with them!

It's not even a morality thing, you'd presume it would be better from a business perspective - not many people now are lucky enough to be like the poster who doesn't even look at the prices. At some point there's a cut off at which people will just say 'no' and not buy anything. They'd be better off to keep loyal customers like OP and have her 'only' spend £50 rather than £60 and make a smaller profit, or only just break even, than piss her off and get £0 and make a loss!

Shops like m&s and John Lewis spend hundreds of thousands on very meh christmas ads - maybe that could be the first thing to go? They could try and think outside the box and do something like the various non-big brand ones that go viral each year rather than paying random celebs to prance around in their party clothes?

the80sweregreat · 29/05/2025 18:44

Labour didn’t want to ‘ tax the working people’ but the shops and hospitality / pubs etc have just done it anyway to cover the extra NI payments and so on or ( like my employer ) just cut our hours down!
( I’m sure the stores have done this as well maybe , but no idea )
They have certainly reduced staff in my big supermarket, it’s all do it yourself mostly.
