Really M&S !!!

Bransdalelass · 29/05/2025 16:37

Have felt incredibly supportive of M&S through their Cyber incident.

Despite the lack of stock in store for weeks now, my account details being compromised, my M&S credit card (only ever used in M&S or on their website) being used fraudulently and the poor communication, I have remained totally loyal.

Until today !!!

I am shocked at the numerous, price increases across the Foodhall. Fish Pie up from £6 to £7. Prawn Thermidor a similar increase, 10p a loaf on my normal bread, Blueberries up by 25p etc.etc.

I am shocked that they are clearly planning to pass all their losses onto their customers in this way and even more shocked that they are doing it whilst we are still having to cope with their ongoing stock shortages etc.

Am I alone in feeling aggrieved? I feel quite strongly that the losses caused by this incident should be borne by their reserves & shareholders.

Regardless, my shopping next week will be with Waitrose, Sainsburys or Aldi. All stores within 1/2 mile of M&S. This customer will not be returning and their loss will not just be my regular food shop, but also the cosmetics, clothes etc I have historically always picked up in-store at the same time.

We have an IT expert here. I hope you've offered your services to Marks & Spencer, @WombForTwo .

It’s been a month. It’s entirely unacceptable. They either need to get back online or close their doors for good. 👍🏻

You can pop off to another shop

Prices are going up everywhere. At least M&S food is good quality.

I’ve also heard on the news / lbc that it’ll be July before this situation is resolved.
It must be devastating for them as so much money down the drain having to sort it all out. These cyber attackers knew what they were doing and very organized, scary really.

im going to complain to Lidl about that……

First world problems for some. No online presence? Shut your doors!

All businesses are there to make profit. All busineses pay their suppliers, staff, rent, overheads, etc.
M&S is not making very high profits anyways. It's not amazon, who may appear to have best customer interest but in reality exploiting staff and suppliers to gain market share while damaging local businesses.

Who do you think was selling bras, knickers and mens suits and food before the power of M&S hit the high street? They put small local drapers and outfitters out of business along with the butchers, bakers and grocers.

Businesses exist to serve the owners, if the firm is large it prioritises the larger owners. Everything else is secondary.

I find the brand loyalty to M&S bemusing considering its quality over the years has been variable at best and its food does not score particularly well in blind tastings. That brand is their primary asset.

You do realise all of their IT systems were hacked and encrypted so they can't access them. They have to rebuild all of the hacked systems again and make sure they are 100% resilient to another attack before they let customers anywhere near with their personal details. This isn't a quick fix. I'm sure some people think they were hacked then got control back a few days later. If they could bring back online shopping quickly they would. This attack is the stuff of nightmares for anyone who works in IT. There is no quick fix. If there was the hackers wouldn't do what they do.

Its a massive failure on their part that it was possible to cause such extensive damage and that their BCP has been unable to get close to managing.

the80sweregreat · 30/05/2025 10:35

Does anyone know who these hackers were or where they live or which country they come from ?
Surely it’s a criminal act and someone must know something.
I caught the tale end of a conversation with a man on lbc who said it was an organized gang of people, but nothing much else. Was it the same ones who targeted the co op? Very scary that every app we have can be compromised and how they can hold these companies to account like this , blackmail and extortion. Do they get jobs in IT first with the company in order to find out how it operates? Someone must know something , but it’s all probably kept under wraps a lot?
As for prices, they are not going down any time soon sadly.

Pedallleur · 30/05/2025 10:43

Hackers can be anywhere there is an internet connection. Can be young/old. No discrimination there. Can be testing the systems for fun or organised eg Fancy Bears who were Russian. Cybercrime is global because it can be. M&S and others use subcontractors and it might be those systems hacked.

amusedbush · 30/05/2025 10:43

Prices are going up everywhere. I've been away on holiday so this morning I did a Tesco shop for the first time in almost three weeks.

I always have a multipack of Freddos in the cupboard (yes, I have lowbrow taste in snacks Blush) and I did a literal double-take when I saw that they've gone from £1.30 for five to £1.40 for four.

bostonchamps · 30/05/2025 10:44

@WombForTwo entirely unacceptable? Are you always this dramatic? They're a profit focused consumer business, not a national service funded by taxes that owe you something.

the80sweregreat · 30/05/2025 10:48

the retail prices index people often show the cost of Freddos to hi light how much everything has gone up in price ? I may have dreamt this, but I often see things on Facebook about this particular chocolate bar.
The prices are certainly ‘ leap frogging ‘ by the sounds of it :(

Zippydooda · 30/05/2025 10:48

I shop in Waitrose, Asda and Tesco and have noticed big increases by 50p or more on some items. I think it's happening everywhere.

There are also regular cyber attacks on schools with this ransomware-type attack. Occasionally they are successful and school systems go down. No access to school databases, registers, child protection info, planning materials, schemes of learning.

WhateverWheneverWherever · 30/05/2025 10:58

Tesco's prices have been going up to the point that I've been shopping in M&S, eating less crap and not spending any more.
I also feel the urge to support them.

How long before the big tubs of Celebrations and Roses shrink to the size of a tub of dairylea?
