What fairly normal things do you not let your DC do?

I won't let my DC have candles, my 14 yo is not impressed. I also don't let them go on fairground rides, though I'm OK with permanent rides at theme parks. Are there things you don't let your DC do, that their friends seem to do?

I also don’t allow candles

giggly · 26/05/2025 21:01

I don’t allow my 16 to drink which is apparently very normal in her school

NuffSaidSam · 26/05/2025 21:02

The candles one is just basic common sense! Anyone letting teens have candles is asking for trouble (specifically a fire).

I never allowed mine to have a trampoline in our garden.

And I didn't let them say the word 'fart' [they are now teens and 20s and give me a lot of grief for that!]

PotolKimchi · 26/05/2025 21:05

No trampolines. No sleepovers.

Terribletwoss · 26/05/2025 21:05

I haven’t let my 2 year olds drink squash yet.

Largely because I think what they don’t know about won’t hurt them! But recognise it’s a bit silly.

Shesellsseashellsnotinmystreet · 26/05/2025 21:09

No play dates or sleepovers until secondary school.
No under age drinking.
No trampoline parks.

😂 You wish. That's 'definitely' going to stop them drinking before 18.

MmeChoufleur · 26/05/2025 21:13

I told them from a young age that they were never to get a motorbike or join the Army. In reality I couldn’t have stopped them once they got to that age. My DS’s best friend ended up dying in a motorbike crash when he was 17. DS had never got a lift on that bike because he knew that I’d go mad. He understands why now. 😔

bedtimestories · 26/05/2025 21:14

My kids had to sit on a booster cushion (car seat) until they were 12yrs. 14yrs if they want to sit in the front

No play dates? At all? Ever? No friends round after school or at weekends? 😯

AwakeNotThruChoice · 26/05/2025 21:18

Not sure as it’s hard to know what others do/dont?

Candles seem like common sense.
I’ve got a 4/13/16 yr old daughters. Honestly I can’t think of anything. Other than obvious. Smoking, drinking, being out late, drugs!
but they’ve never asked/wanted to do the above.

They love sleepovers. Trampolines. Guess they didn’t have fizzy drink until at least 10??ears pierced- had to be 13.

Coffee08 · 26/05/2025 21:19

Play Roblox. My 7 year old had it for a few weeks and whenever he played it, it seemed so inappropriate to me, despite the settings being linked to his age. I deleted it which he was resentful about, but I explained to him that it didn’t seem safe in my opinion.

Bananalanacake · 26/05/2025 21:23

Have ear piercing at all. If they want it they have to arrange it and pay for it themselves when they are over 18.

cornflourblue · 26/05/2025 21:23

@bedtimestories Were they very small? Booster seat recommendations are based on height (where the seat belt sits on the shoulder) rather than age.

Zippp · 26/05/2025 21:24

We don’t have an x-box or switch or whatever they’re called now. No other odd things: they were allowed sleepovers, play dates, squash (although I don’t think I have ever bought it) and they stopped using boosters when they outgrew them. We didn’t actually have a TV when they were little. No moral objection just we have busy lives.

Readytohealnow · 26/05/2025 21:25

I don’t allow screens. They’re young at the moment and I am aware they may use them at friends’ houses which is fine but none at home.
No squash neither. Again, if they have it out I won’t complain.

Can I ask why?

cadburyegg · 26/05/2025 21:27

I haven’t allowed ds10 to have a smartphone, which according to some people on MN means that he is going to be hugely deprived socially and will miss out on learning how to navigate life with a smartphone... He has a dumb phone.

When they are with me (their dad has them EOW) I am strict on screen time, what they are allowed to watch and what games they can play.

I haven’t allowed a trampoline in the garden because of noise disruption but tbf they do have a pretty awesome climbing frame so they don’t complain.

I still insist ds10 sits in a HBB most of the time.

I understand why some people don't do sleepovers... but would be interested in why no playdates?

My kids have never had tablets and didn't have smartphones until they were 12, which I gather is unusual these days. I wanted to wait until 14 for oldest as their school had a no smartphone policy anyway, but Covid happened when they were only 2 terms into it so I bought them one just before lockdown so they had an easy way to keep in touch with their new friends.

It was more that I wanted other parents to allow their kids to do more things as I would have liked kids to start going out with friends and without adults sooner.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 26/05/2025 21:27

I didn’t have a television until DD was 10.

My 13yr old is nearly 6 foot. I'd love to see him on a booster seat! He was taller than me at 12.

Mine aren't allowed on trampolines.

Not silly at all! They'll have wonderful teeth. You have control of their food and drink for such a short period of time why introduce them to something unnecessary!

kissmyfatass · 26/05/2025 21:29

I don’t let DD swear in front of me or drink her best friends mum does and it makes me cringe. They are 13

YetiRosetti · 26/05/2025 21:32

Play hide and seek in the park. I have a strict eyes on policy at all times in public (they’re 4 and 6). I am generally pretty relaxed but I’m neurotic about them getting lost or snatched.
