What fairly normal things do you not let your DC do?

I won't let my DC have candles, my 14 yo is not impressed. I also don't let them go on fairground rides, though I'm OK with permanent rides at theme parks. Are there things you don't let your DC do, that their friends seem to do?

No smart phone for my ten year old. No Roblox at all. Like the pp above said, it seemed really inappropriate and not at all a secure space, in spite of the security settings.

No energy drinks.

Otherwise most things in moderation are ok. We have a trampoline in the garden

PopThatBench · 26/05/2025 21:34

No Roblox.
She’s almost 8 but no phone (?!), other kids in her class have phones already!
No outdoor bouncy castles.
No fizzy drinks.
No sleepovers at all, no play dates with anybody but cousins so far.
She has her ears pierced (on her 7th birthday) as I was 7 when I had mine.
She has a TV in her room and an Amazon tablet and she doesn’t use either because she’s still thankfully into toys and playing.

Beamur · 26/05/2025 21:36

I didn't let her say 'haitch' for H.
Its aitch. No 'huh'

At primary all the kids seemed to have Friday after school sweets. Fine by me but I wouldn’t let them have pick’n’mix as children grabbed them without using the scoop. I feared bouts of stomach bugs from unwashed hand germs. All sweets had to be wrapped.

But I also let DD1 ride her bike and meet her friends at the park. To get to the park she rode past the sweet shop. Now nearly 27 she recently confessed she bought the unwrapped sweets with her friends 😂 Her small act of rebellion and she didn’t get sick from it.

My kids had to sit on a booster cushion (car seat) until they were 12yrs. 14yrs if they want to sit in the front

That's a bit extreme. I was driving at 15

No play dates or sleepovers until secondary school.
No under age drinking.
No trampoline parks.

No play dates until secondary ?! That's surely when they stop having play dates 😄 And my DS 12 has been invited to two bday parties at trampoline parks this year.

I'm all with you on no underage drinking though but did you seriously never invite a friend home to play before your children were 12 y old ?

Poonu · 26/05/2025 21:40

No sleepovers
No phones
Early bedtimes

Mumoftwoboysaged4and5 · 26/05/2025 21:41

Interesting that so many have said no play dates/sleepovers, genuinely curious as to why.

We have a no devices or screens in their bedrooms rule. Eldest is still only 8 but he will not be allowed a tv or laptop in his room as a teenager.

Needspaceforlego · 26/05/2025 21:42

I'm laughing at the no squash.
My oldest ended up with squash after tummy bugs that left them seriously dehydrated. One ended up on a drip.
Nurses were keen to get fluids and sugar into them....that was the end of the water only rule.

My DC was 5ft 9 by the time they were 14. They’d look like BFG if they did that 😂

Poonu · 26/05/2025 21:42

No fizzy drinks
They do like sparkling water

Ears pierced, tv in her room and amazon tablet but not allowed to invite friends home?

Why no play dates? That's what childhood's all about!

I haven’t let my 2 year olds drink squash yet.

Largely because I think what they don’t know about won’t hurt them! But recognise it’s a bit silly.

My 12 year old still only drinks water and milk as she doesn’t like anything else
think she was at school before she tried squash
I was the same as you. If they drank water why give them squash!

That was me 😂

They are only just two, it’s not a rule forever, but currently they don’t care so I’ve just not shown them that better things exist!

I don’t believe this one. I think it’s to wind up the car seat people.
Unless they are very very small children then they are adult sized by 14 and utterly ridiculous to use a booster seat.

Ears pierced, tv in her room and amazon tablet but not allowed to invite friends home?

She asked for ears to be pierced when she was 5, I said to wait until she was 7.
She was waking up at 6am to go downstairs and put the TV on. We got her a TV for her room in the hopes she’d watch TV in bed and at least relax more, she doesn’t watch it.
She doesn’t use her tablet (never asks for it to be charged).
She hasn’t asked to have a friend round yet? I wouldn’t say no if she did. I’d be more cautious about her going to somebody else’s house though.

Same. Only milk and water so far. I just think once he tastes something else then it's game over 😁

Pierced ears 🤮 and TV in room? For a child?

What a shame she can't do a normal childhood thing, like have a play date. Are you keen for her to be a teenager, rather than a child?

Loveduppenguin · 26/05/2025 21:49

Some of these are absolutely mind blowing!
If your children don’t have play dates, what do they do to form relationships with other children? I’m genuinely intrigued?

I don’t understand the big deal about pierced ears. I just don’t my DD is 12 and has her seconds done. She was too small at in each ear it looks lovely.

That doesn’t make it a ridiculous rule generally. Most parents would bend any rule they had if their child was unwell and in hospital.

Mayflyoff · 26/05/2025 21:50

We don't have a trampoline because various medical friends warned me off. Those friends still ended up with trampolines, but we never cracked. Not sure what happened there.

Can I ask why everyone is against ear piercings?

doodleschnoodle · 26/05/2025 21:51

What’s wrong with play dates?! Confused

This thread is teaching me I am a very lax parent Grin Only thing I can think of is no ear piercing till secondary school, but I don’t think that’s particularly draconian.
