Of course she would have been getting ready for photographers. So? It's not an excuse to shove another person in the face.

Uricon2 · 28/05/2025 12:55

EM's head went back with that 2 handed shove in the face. If she were trying to stop him getting close because (very hypothetically) she didn't want him to mess up her hair and makeup, a hand on the chest or shoulder to hold him off would have been more normal movements.

Or even (here's a thought) "don't mess my hair and makeup!".

I only saw one hand and I’ve watched it a dozen times. I can’t believe what a storm in a tea cup this has become.

Only one hand? Does that make it ok?

BIossomtoes · 28/05/2025 13:04

It’s not the end of the world. If that’s the worst thing that ever happens to him he’ll have a charmed life. Other pp are saying it was two handed by the way @ScarlettOYara. It wasn’t.

If you open the link, the first image is even clearer.

Video shows Emmanuel Macron being pushed in face by wife

The French president's office sought to downplay the incident, which happened as he prepared to disembark from his plane after touching down in Vietnam.

You're right, looking at that it's clearly two hands.

It's not "the end of the world".? That is a very low bar.
I personally think that physical abuse is not acceptable. Will the world spin off it's axis? No, but people's lives are ruined by DV.
A charmed life?

Basically the article says

BM tells him to Stay away loser.

EM says Let's try,

BM says no

EM says I see

But lip reading is an art and lots of misinterpretations can happen even with experienced lip readers.

After she'd hit him and he'd stepped back, they reckon he says 'let's go', she then says something along the lines of 'go away, you loser' (or get out of here/back off) when he offers his arm, he asks 'please can we try?' and accepts it with an 'I see'.

Even with it being in another language and the exact translation being open to differences of opinion, there's no pleasantries from her and what appears to be acceptance and a lack of intent to inflame an already hostile/aggressive person further/trying to placate them in what would feel like an impossible situation.

Imagine being the spouse of a prominent figure who has to attend all these formal occasions. They def draw the short straw imv.

Quite. It would do my head in.

Especially in my late seventies. Who wants to be doing that?

Then you probably wouldn't have trained your partner to work in public office.

And this is why men and women get away with DV. The victim get scared people won’t believe them because the abuser puts on such a good public show and they think no one would possibly believe them. If she acted this way when there were airline staff there does make you wonder what goes on behind closed doors.

I'd love that! Imagine travelling all over the world, 1st class, meeting Heads of State, all the movers and shakers, having a front row seat in History. Brilliant.

Inawhyl · 28/05/2025 16:30

Michelle Obama didn’t initially want Obama to run for Presidency and look at all the vitriole and abuse she got as the First Lady but yet she yet managed not to whack or push her husband in the face - at least not to our knowledge.

If that is what happened, let’s be clear here, it’s abuse and it’s unacceptable.

That’s because you’ve never done it and I don’t imagine you’re 72 and have had seven years of it. She must be sick to death of it by now.

You have absolutely no idea if she thinks that!
Good grief, some stretching today! 😂

Absolutely. Plus, she was the mother of young children, and of course, African American, so the target of a lot of hate. She managed to conduct herself with grace and dignity throughout.

Given that I’m a bit younger than her and that’s exactly how I’d feel it’s not that much of a stretch.

Yes, but she's not you. You have absolutely no idea what she feels about her role. She may love it. We have no idea.
Plus it's no excuse for that assault, whatever her feelings.
