Well Macron was 29 when he married Brigitte. So not 15 either. I just think he was separated from her for about 10 years and could have hooked up with someone his own age but didn't. So I think this is true love.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 27/05/2025 21:49

If anything, it seems he was obsessed with her. From what I know, she cut him loose, said go to Uni and meet other women your own age,

YourAmplePlumPoster · 27/05/2025 21:53

Anyway, why are various news organisations obsessing over a 30 something relationship? What's the point.?

Yupal · 27/05/2025 21:55

What a weird hill to choose to die on, don’t discuss this wildly inappropriate relationship that started between a child and a teacher, in the context of the recent news. Stop talking about that.
Instead talk about all these adults, in relationships with people who were also adults when they met.
Righto 🤨

Oh give over.

The law is different in France anyway.

You know bugger all about them or their relationship other than what the press reports - and that is usually skewed.

She's 72, they've been together for 20+ years, he's an adult man and can make his own choice- oh, and he's the bloody president too.

Edited

They've been together 32 years, since he was 15 and she was 39. Even though you're trying to minimise it by saying 20+ years. Why didn't you say 30+ years?

When they met, and started a relationship, she was nearly 40, he was in his mid teens. No getting away from that I'm afraid. And no amount of trying to minimise it takes away the fact that a 40 year old woman dated a teenager. AND SHE WAS HIS TEACHER! Grim. 💀

And what does 'oh and he's the bloody president too' even mean? So what?

YourAmplePlumPoster · 27/05/2025 22:00

Let alone the weirdos implying that Brigitte is a man and Emmanuel is gay. Eeeewhh. Weird.

Cause he's the President, one of the most powerful men in the world and he can do exactly what he likes, including who he chooses as a partner. Let's not forget that other Presidents of France chose to cheat on their wives. Look at the twat Hollande and what he did. Mitterand had an out of wedlock child.

Meanwhile Russel Crowe aged 60 is on holiday with his 30 something girlfriend and nobody says a peep. Mick Jagger aged 80 is with a woman younger than his daughters. It's obviously the age difference between the woman and man that enrages people the most. I saw posts referring to the film producer Sam Taylor Johnson and her young bloke as a grooming thing of a "child." Whatever happens, older women must never have liaisons with younger men as they are groomers and perverts but older men with young women are just normal.

A 60 year old man and a 30 year old woman is quite different from 39 year old teacher and her 15 year old pupil. The former consists of two adults with an age gap some might find distasteful. The latter consists of an adult and a child. It is not comparable. The Brigitte apologists who insist this was a love story and marriage that has stood the test of time are probably the same ones on this thread claiming she was ‘wiping something from his face’, ‘it was just a silly spat, all couples argue’ or ‘well, let’s wait and find out what he did to deserve it’. Awful.

100% this. It's all totally grim. I am shocked that anyone is actually excusing it.

The amount of whataboutery being chucked about is almost making me dizzy.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 27/05/2025 22:22

This all happened 30 years ago when they met 1995 and they've been married since 2007. Why is it anyone's business now? Eh?

YourAmplePlumPoster · 27/05/2025 22:23

How about sending Brigitte to prison?

YourAmplePlumPoster · 27/05/2025 22:34

So we actually have a French President who is totally faithful to his wife, unlike the previous disgraces. Hollande was a particularly egregious case.

When vulnerable people are groomed, they form attachments and it can seem like love and it can last a lifetime. Just because someone is in a position of power doesn't mean that in their personal life they are equally powerful and in control.

The business is that it is highlighting domestic violence in a way few people would expect. This case is showing up the fractured way we view partner abuse. It's absolutely not on for either partner to do this. It also shows how very easily it could happen to absolutely anyone, it has no class, nor creed, nor colour.

Domstic violence and it's effects is everybodies business. Saying it isn't is minimising the impact not only on the individual but on society itself.

Uricon2 · 27/05/2025 20:11

Russell Crowe and Jagger didn't take up with these women when they were 15, did they? Also, they were not in a position of authority over said child.

Francesca Annis was 17 years older than Ralph Fiennes when they started their relationship. She got stick (unfairly) and I believe said "He was 36. I did not take the contents of a cradle".

Emmanuel Macron was. Why can't you see that and why do you keep going on about totally different scenarios?

You're arguing with a brick wall here, mate.

You could apply that sentiment to any historical cases of grooming. Doesn't make it any better.

xanthomelana · 28/05/2025 04:15

It’s quite sad that there are parents on this thread that don’t recognise grooming for what it is. I have always wondered how groomers get away with it but now it’s very clear that lots of people don’t know the signs.

Haretodaybadgertomorrow · 28/05/2025 05:01

People are speculating as if they were alone inside the plane! The ground staff were right there. Another couple of staff members were opening the doors.

I doubt that the president of France and his wife would choose to have a physical argument in front of flight attendants and their own staff who were accompanying them.

They would have had security guards physically close to them too, as transferring from one mode of transport to the next is one of the riskiest bits of protecting someone.

All very odd though. If they were arguing then I think the most obvious reason would be that he has been straying. Not that anything justifies violence! Most relationships with a huge age gap start to falter when the oldest person starts to get, well, old, and when the disparites between the couple become more apparent. That would be the most likely scenario I would have thought but who knows?

ScarlettOYara · 28/05/2025 05:45

Who knows? We know that she assaulted him, because we could see it.

We don’t know actually, She was definitely in the wrong. But we saw a 10-second snap shot. This could be a long-standing joke between them that they always lark about before the doors are opened. I doubt it. She could have been lashing out in response to something he said or did. Still doesn’t make it right. But we don’t know. They could have been larking around and the look of horror on his face was the realisation that the world’s press was looking on.

It could be a number of scenarios. It didn’t look like larking about to me admittedly but we don’t know the context. And saying that doesn’t in any shape or form make me a defender of da btw before someone tries to argue that. Physical violence of any sort is deplorable.

We will probably never know what happened because the French press allows individuals a certain degree of privacy unlike their UK counterparts.

MushMonster · 28/05/2025 05:57

Oh my dear Lord! I cannot believe that there are people on this thread saying " why is it ok for a man to be older, but not for a woman?"
Just flipping read! He was 14-15! She was his secondary SCHOOL teacher! Nothing to do with just the age gap.
No wonder these things do still happen.....

I do wonder, is it lack of comprehension, or denial on a larger scale? Very strange.

MusedeBordeaux · 28/05/2025 06:07

She went for his face. This is the action of someone who doesn't have the physical strength for anything else, but wants to lash out anyway.

Whilst it is true we don't know the truth, and may never know, the background is grim and being the French president does not preclude him from historical grooming and the strong possibility that very unhealthy dynamics are at play, within this relationship.
