“"A lack of faith is often tragically accompanied by the loss of meaning in life, the neglect of mercy, appalling violations of human dignity, the crisis of the family and so many other wounds that afflict our society,"

I don’t know why I expected anything different. Maybe because he likes Wordle?

Well religion full stop doesnt value atheism so it wouldnt really be surprising if he said that we're all going to hell in a handcart.

If people think this is bad or wrong listen to what some of the Ayatollahs have said over the years. Heartwarming stuff.

No, the OP specifically said that her issue was “I hoped he would not do the boring “atheists have no moral compass and have a God shaped hole at their core” routine. Very many religious people don’t do that. And I hoped he wouldn’t suggest that that atheists have no mercy and commit appalling violations of human dignity.very many religious people don’t do that either.”

He was talking about people who substitute faith for a love of money and power, and the contexts where people despise and ridicule religion when he made that comment.

I think digging into it and saying he was specifically saying ‘atheists have no mercy’ is just looking for offence.

Said by a person who is now the leader of an institution which love power and money. That is hypocritical, yes?

CurlewKate · 11/05/2025 14:05

People are really skating around his actual words, aren’t they?

Or just treating his speech as he was some random local village priest.

100%

I was raised Catholic and I am deeply ashamed of the faith I was raised in and renounced it long ago.

So why does it bother you now, if it's nothing to do with you?

Maybe re read the thread where many posters explain this time and time again.

My question was addressed to you.

However, if you can't or don't want to answer it, that is your prerogative.

I don’t see any questions from you addressed to me.

CurlewKate · 11/05/2025 15:42

I think @LaurelAvenuewas addressing , rather than @Sweetsummerchild2. But who knows-the new Mumsnet is difficult to negotiate!

But the sins of some perverts in the Catholic Curch doesn't mean that one cannot still love the "faith". It's a bit like saying that the BBC knew about Jimmy Saville and then never watching the BBC again

Or in your case, just picking bits out of a full paragraph like the rest of it is irrelevant to what is being said.

But given that you're an atheist who has made a point of looking into a speech of a leader of a religion you don't belong to, I guess you found what you were looking for.

Sweetsummerchild2 · 11/05/2025 16:13

It’s not the same at all. The discussion here is about the moral righteousness of the leader(s) of the catholic church when they are absolutely not in a position to be morally righteous.

You don’t need to make a point of looking into his speech. It’s all over the news…You need to understand the cultural and political influence the Catholic Church has to understand the context of why non -catholics take an interest too.

We are all sinners - it's just a matter of degree....

At the end of the day God will decide how "morally righteous" we all are (or not)

What impact do you think that this wholly unremarkable and un-groundbreaking speech will have on Catholics world-wide?

Pointless question really.

You said I need to have an understanding of the cultural and political influence of the Catholic Church to understand why non-Catholics might take an interest in this speech, but are unable to point to any impact that it is going to have on anyone?

I am not talking about ONE speech and if you do not have an understanding of the position of the catholic church and the pope in the world, then I don’t have the time to summarise that for you. Much rather discuss with people with a bit of knowledge.

That's pretty funny.

But this thread is about that one speech, so I'm not sure why you're suddenly widening the scope.

Honestly, you sound so confused 🫤 If you don’t mind, I will just skip your posts from now on and you can skip mine.

I'm really not confused at all. Perhaps you should look at the thread you are on to see why people are discussing the things that they are discussing and not what you think they should be talking about.
