But I'm not going to get annoyed that the leader of the biggest religious organisation on the planet thinks that being religious is a good thing.

You don’t need to believe in communion with Christ to believe in the greater good of humanity, at an essential level. A lot of people are lost souls, that’s a fact.

Well all of that is reasonable. Faith, in whatever form it takes, gives one strength and resilience to tackle adversity.

He hasn't even said "A loss of faith is always... or even just "A loss of faith"...
He's qualified the statement with "often"

The cardinals took a long time to choose this Pope. There were big shoes to fill plus very complex geopolitics. He seems a good solid choice to me. Diplomatic even.

How so? Do you think that those without religious faith lack resilience or ability to cope with adversity?

I hoped he would not do the boring “atheists have no moral compass and have a God shaped hole at their core” routine. Very many religious people
don’t do that. And I hoped he wouldn’t suggest that that atheists have no mercy and commit appalling violations of human dignity.very many religious people don’t do that either.
