“"A lack of faith is often tragically accompanied by the loss of meaning in life, the neglect of mercy, appalling violations of human dignity, the crisis of the family and so many other wounds that afflict our society,"

I don’t know why I expected anything different. Maybe because he likes Wordle?

I think he may be right.

I agree.

Honestly OP, he's the head of the Catholic church, not a Prime Minister or a President. What exactly did you expect him to say?

Cognacsoft · 09/05/2025 22:05

The pope is the head of the Catholic church.
His concern is with the Catholic faith.

Expecting him to say positive things about atheists is like expecting Starmer to say that the Tories are pretty good chaps and we should embrace their views.

And we don't need a written sigh to prove your disappointment.

CranfordScones · 09/05/2025 22:07

We know that Galileo was right and the Catholic church was wrong. Religion teaches people to be satisfied with the wrong answers. The entire history of the church has been about power, status and money. They have no monopoly on the value of goodness and virtue, and precious little interest in it, except as a method of controlling people. Especially women.

HelpMeGetThrough · 09/05/2025 22:10

It’s the new Catholic CEO version of “Corporate Bullshit”.

If you want the leader of a church to not talk about God, then the Church of England is for you.

UnctuousUnicorns · 09/05/2025 22:14

What really cracked me up was when the twelve year old BBC reporter turned to the Australian theologian, and said, "The pope has just said, 'I have sinned, in my thoughts, in my words, and in my deeds.' Now what do we make of that?"
The theologian was like, "Umm, well, that's standard in the Mass... 😕"
I had visions of tabloid headlines a la "POPE'S SHOCK CONFESSION - I'M A WRONG 'UN". 😅

Very good, Elizabeth!

I hoped he would not do the boring “atheists have no moral compass and have a God shaped hole at their core” routine. Very many religious people
don’t do that. And I hoped he wouldn’t suggest that that atheists have no mercy and commit appalling violations of human dignity.very many religious people don’t do that either.

He didn't. Not everything is about atheists. The Pope certainly isn't.🤣🤣🤣

Sweetsummerchild2 · 09/05/2025 22:16

It could have been written by a 12 year old. I don’t understand why people listen to this nonsense.

Butchyrestingface · 09/05/2025 22:17

I say this as a (Catholic) atheist, I wish there would be just one fecking day that Catholics were left alone to celebrate an momentous event for them without people starting carping threads about how they're going to burn ALL the books or that the pope's speech didn't pander to atheists or they don't understand why Catholics do this or that or the next thing or how Catholicism is the root of all evils and how can any decent, intelligent non-flat earther be a Catholic, blah, blah, blah.

We are indeed my dear. I was only saying that to Giorgino Mio as we did our Mozartino duet this morning. So uplifting!

Yes. From the news it looks like he was talking about a lack of faith amongst Catholics. Not atheists. Although he also didn't say lack of religious faith, just faith in general.
I mean in my family, my brother, mother and some of my cousins are pretty devout, but all now go to various evangelical churches, whereascthose who arent that bothered are clinging to Catholicism ( including me) so I suppose he's got a point! He didn't say anything about atheists being evil!

nebulae · 09/05/2025 22:20

He's got a brass neck saying that given the appalling atrocities the catholic church is responsible for.

Given that he's representing the Catholic Church, it's not surprising he'd make such a statement. However, it's both hypocritical and insensitive, especially to those who have been harmed by religious institutions. Remarks like this can feel dismissive of victims and self-serving, ignoring the Church's own role in causing some of the very 'wounds' it condemns. Also any rational person knows that those without religious faith can also lead moral and good lives.

He’s just another Marxist Pope.

“Prevost is known for his commitment to the poor and migrants, and for his balanced approach on social issues, which aligns with Pope Francis' vision. He has been described as a centrist and a progressive on many social issues, although he has faced some controversy regarding his handling of clergy sexual abuse cases during his time as provincial of the Augustinian Province of Chicago.”

That’s Wikipedia, by the way. Not the greatest source, but still worrying. If Wikipedia says ‘balanced’ it means ‘imbalanced to the point of being batshit crazy’.

I read that 108 out of 133 Cardinals at the Conclave were selected by Francis. He loaded the top tier with his followers, ensuring that all were ideologically committed to the revolution. Just basic Marxist strategy that they have deployed from Lenin to Obama and will deploy in any institution they seize.

There can be no counter revolution. The first thing they always do is try to ensure that it’s impossible to reverse their period in control. Francis looks like he did a good job of that.

So Francis 2.0 and one of the institutions that should be most strongly on the side of tradition and sanity still on the side of the whole globalist progressive shitshow……

Do you know what Marxism is?
Do you know what a Pope is?

The current US administration is more openly faith centred than any government in US history. It's also blatantly guilty of "neglect of mercy" and "appalling violations of human dignity".

I will say, in his holiness’s defence, that he did criticise JD Vance on X before becoming pope.

So he’s at least got that in his favour.

They are ALLOWED to do it as much as they like. But the snowflakery and self-absorption in starting a thread to complain about the head of the Catholic Church not writing an ode to atheists in his first official speech is off the charts.

CurlewKate · 09/05/2025 20:44

I’m not expecting him to say that. I’m
expecting him to accept that atheists are not evil!

He’s catholic!!! Of course he thinks atheists are godless heathens! Do you know anything about religion?

Why are you even following anything to do with the pope if you’re an atheist?
