What other brilliant frozen food have I missed?

So the recent thread resoundingly in favour of frozen mash made me buy some… and yes Mumsnet is quite correct.. totally converted. Which got be wondering what else have I missed?
My frozen foods are just the usual chips, peas and fishfingers. What other game changers are out there?

On top of my previous list I also like to have frozen sliced carrots (great for stews), frozen sliced leeks and the soffrito, but that has become hard to come by as my local co op and Tesco have both stopped stocking it.

They are awful, really dry! Is this the same friend?! I was recommended them too 🤯

Most of them are no more convenient than cooking them from scratch and end up so tough but the Bannister ones are pre-cooked and delicious.

Itsu frozen gyoza are really good - usually on offer every now and then so I stock up. Don’t follow the steaming option, that makes them soggy, just shallow fry.

Try microwaving for two mins then 2 mins in the air fryer on max crisp.

Faffette · 11/04/2025 19:02

Iceland cheese hash browns

lifeonmars100 · 11/04/2025 19:03

Another vote for Aldi hash browns, frozen parathas (get mine from the local Asian supermarket and they are divine), frozen spinach for chucking in home made daal, curries and stews, frozen berries which I defrost and then mix into thick natural Greek yohurt and top with brown sugar and pretend it is a health dessert! I have never seen frozen mash, or I must have walked past it and it did not register with me. Which brand(s) do people recommend?

My friend raves about frozen jacket potatoes. Not sure if she buys McCain or just any old supermarket brand ones.

I haven't tried them so no idea if they're as fabulous as she says.

hmmmmm ive tried them, they are ok, in a pinch, if you dont want a cripsy skin

Do frozen onions fry ok? I imagine them to be quite wet

They do - I use them all the time when I cook.

I’ve been buying a big bag in Sainsbury’s for years. It’s called ‘vegetable base’. Tesco also do but it’s a smaller bag.

and Morrisons, M&S and Ocado.

not always available - should you find one you really like its wise to buy two

bananaramaisdabomb · 11/04/2025 19:04

Anything from the French brand Picard, which you can find on Ocado

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 11/04/2025 19:04

Birds Eye Chicken in tempura batter, excellent for DIY Wagamama's.

Also, discovering that you can freeze tofu was a game changer. I know not everyone likes tofu, and most of them live in my house, so I often have half a block left over.

Frozen cherries. Heat up in pan for a few mins, don’t need sugar. Add to Greek yogurt. Elite breakfast.

JustSawJohnny · 11/04/2025 19:05

I've never tried a nice frozen mash. Have tried a few but they weren't good. Are some better than others?

I tend to avoid freezer food as it's usually full of pointless preservatives and fillers but Aldi do individual portions of creamy pesto prawns that are delicious over linguine and the ingredients are basic.

I fully agree with this.

Great quality and usually good ingredients.

More expensive but worth it for the quality.

sleepandcoffee · 11/04/2025 19:07

Frozen corn on cob is fab , much juicier than fresh

Ihopeyouhavent · 11/04/2025 19:07

I find any supermarket mac and cheese good, even Tesco 85p Mac and Cheese good, if you add salt, pepper, for me buffalo sauce etc.

LouisaMayAlcott · 11/04/2025 19:09

Vegetable base is also available in Asda, I don’t think they’ve ever been out of stock when I’ve needed some.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/04/2025 19:10

Yes! we have defosted frozen cherries, with pale meat, turkey chicken, guinea fowl,
or even better, duck, a Clafouti Limousin, or as you say, for breakfast, with muesli,
for pud with Mackie vanilla ice cream and thin home made shortbread,
versatile and often on offer

CoconutSky · 11/04/2025 19:11

Icelands frozen chicken strips. By far the nicest. Make a mean kfc fakeaway

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 11/04/2025 19:11

Frozen paratha, just heat for a few minutes each side. So much nicer with a curry than shop nought naan bread.

SoOxon · 11/04/2025 19:15

Waitrose croissants or pain au raisin, apple slices, crinkle cut chips, lasagne,
actually
anything fromWaitrose frozen section its all good, especially flans and desserts.

ThePussy · 11/04/2025 19:18

I miss Picard so much! The Ocado range is better than nothing but doesn’t touch the sides of what they offer in France.

WhiteWriting · 11/04/2025 19:21

Why has no-one mentioned Mini Magnums? Caramel Billionaire/Caramel Almond Duo. Lifechanging.

Frozen chapattis and parathas. Just a minute or two in a frying pan and they taste amazing. A million times better than shop bought naan breads, which always seen really dry.

Which brand please?
