So the recent thread resoundingly in favour of frozen mash made me buy some… and yes Mumsnet is quite correct.. totally converted. Which got be wondering what else have I missed?
My frozen foods are just the usual chips, peas and fishfingers. What other game changers are out there?

My friend raves about frozen jacket potatoes. Not sure if she buys McCain or just any old supermarket brand ones.

I haven't tried them so no idea if they're as fabulous as she says.

I’ve looked at these and it says put them in the oven for 55mins, surely you can pretty much cook one from scratch in this time and save yourself lots of money ?!

BunnyLake · 11/04/2025 18:49

I’ve been a frozen mash convert for several years now, I never do my own. I always try to have in stock frozen diced onions, frozen shredded cabbage, frozen sliced peppers, frozen sliced red onion, frozen spinach, frozen broccoli and frozen cauliflower. I’ve lately started to stock frozen croissants, frozen chocolate croissants and frozen pain au chocolate (all go in the airfryer). My waste over the years has reduced dramatically since getting as many frozen products as possible.

Doggymummar · 11/04/2025 18:49

Celeriac, cos it's such a shit to prepare. And Greggs pasties.

Veggielepsy · 11/04/2025 18:50

Berries
whole leaf spinach for cooking
Ginger (I buy whole and grate)
Chillis for freezing, thaw for a bit or put in a blended soup recipe

Best way is to steam and shallow fry at the same time (the proper way to do it)

Good old pot stickers

5 mins in microwave

Ophy83 · 11/04/2025 18:51

Agree with lots of the above.

Another good one is frozen pizza dough. Very handy if you have a small amounts of leftover marinara sauce/ meatballs / veg / odds and ends of cheese, ham etc but can't be bothered with the effort of making your own dough

I’m sorry, there’s decent frozen mash?
Can you tell me the brand please? I have a cooked portion of cottage pie filling in the freezer I can’t take to work because I can’t be bothered to make mash for one, & don’t eat mash with anything else.

Tesco is £1.80 a bag. Really nice!

Frozen seafood mix. Great for risotto and pasta, I get mine from Lidl

Yes, this is brilliant - we use it for Thai seafood curries.

bigraspberry · 11/04/2025 18:53

Love these

I'm pretty sure she does them in the microwave and they take a few minutes. She wouldn't bother if it was 55 mins.

The M&S one is superb. The Sainsbury's one not quite as good. Not got round to trying the Morrisons one yet. Awesome with a gammon steak and I add extra cheese on top.

Sounds great! Thanks so much. 😀

Ilovelowry · 11/04/2025 18:53

I always have frozen...:

Prawns
Spinach
Edemame beans

NetZeroZealot · 11/04/2025 18:54

Frozen organic blueberries from Ocado are my breakfast go to.

Ilovelowry · 11/04/2025 18:54

Oh! And the M&S Frozen chicken and beef stock.
We use it to make a thin soup/broth with beans and chopped peppers and edemame beans and some chilli.

And in risotto and stew.

jay55 · 11/04/2025 18:54

Hash brown bites (basically American tater tots)

I've seen frozen soffrito in Waitrose and Morrisons but to be honest, it's really easy to make and I prefer the ingredients to be chopped really finely. I put it in little pots and just take a pot out of the freezer when I need it.

The M&S one is really finely chopped, much finer than I'd ever be able willing to do by hand. I love it!

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 11/04/2025 18:56

This has inspired me to Iceland to stock up before the next term starts - especially with ingreidents to make cooking easier.

So far my list is:
frozen mash
chicken skewers
chopped onion
mince
prathta

what else should I add?

Doggydoctor · 11/04/2025 18:57

Oh yes Picard shop is the best. Just arrived at our place first stop Picard today as tomorrow it will be mobbed.
Think we’ve tried most of their stock yet to find something we don’t like.
Back on UK we stock up with frozen berries various varieties veg all sorts.
Ikea meatballs and cinnamon buns pancakes hash browns.
Why make life harder when your to busy to prep food.

Do they still have crispy skins ?!

motherofgodhaudyerwheesht · 11/04/2025 18:48

This. In spades. Absolutely gutted I am now in Scotland with no access to Picard foods. Did hatch an elaborate plan to bulk ship some up from London in refrigerated boxes but was disappointed by the current range at Ocado.
M&S announced a partnership with Picard with a big fanfare but have never encountered the result in store - possibly Brexit has made it too expensive.

British supermarkets are really missing a trick re frozen food in general.
The Picard savoury tomato cubes were an absolute godsend, the paella, confit duck, raspberry, apple flans, portuguese tarts and various gratins were a lifesaver in the freezer. Sob.

Omg I used the Picard bechemal sauce for a lasagne recently and it was fab. And I can make my own bechemal sauce but this was so much better.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 11/04/2025 18:59

OT, but don't bother with frozen leeks.
There's a lot of the tough dark green tops that needs to be picked out before using.

MrsSlimShady · 11/04/2025 18:59

In my freezer:

Frozen sourdough (buy a whole one and cut in half, no wasted bread)
Spinach
peas
Big cubes of soup for work lunch
prawns
batch cooked meals of chilli, lasagna and lentils
pizzas
itsu packets of bad buns and gyozo
chocolate brioche loaves
chips and sweet potato fries
chilli’s, ginger
frozen berries and bananas (freeze extras before go off)
frozen avocado

Do frozen onions fry ok? I imagine them to be quite wet

They are great if you're just going to fry them up as the base of a stew.

My freezer standbys are salmon wellington (Tesco, Aldi); potatoes dauphinoise; apple strudel (totally unauthentic, but dirt cheap from most supermarkets); frozen berries for overnight oats.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 11/04/2025 19:02

Vegetable base from Morrisons ie finely diced onions, celery and carrots

less healthily - waffle fries. I love them
