What other brilliant frozen food have I missed?

So the recent thread resoundingly in favour of frozen mash made me buy some… and yes Mumsnet is quite correct.. totally converted. Which got be wondering what else have I missed?
My frozen foods are just the usual chips, peas and fishfingers. What other game changers are out there?

Edamame, pierogies and pastries

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 11/04/2025 18:19

I've seen frozen soffrito in Waitrose and Morrisons but to be honest, it's really easy to make and I prefer the ingredients to be chopped really finely. I put it in little pots and just take a pot out of the freezer when I need it.

dancebob1980 · 11/04/2025 18:21

I second the support for the veggie base mix - a bag of onion, carrot and celery all diced very small. It pads out bologneses, chillis and soup, and is a great way of adding hidden veg. I don't even like celery, but can't taste it.
Currently available in our local Sainsbury's- i seriously did a little happy dance when it appeared (again). Please can more people start buying it so that there is ongoing demand and it doesn't disappear again?

iceland sell a frozen doner kebab meat which tastes exactly like the real thing.

Morrisons chargrilled mediterranean vegetables - absolutely delicious with no added nasties! Loads of different ways you can use them.

I buy tonnes of these. I add them to everything.

I also rave about frozen jackets. They’re so fast to make and so crispy on the outside and so so fluffy on the inside.

TropicofCapricorn · 11/04/2025 18:23

I freeze my own jacket potatoes. Bung 6 extra in when we're having jackets. May as well, if I'm using the oven anyway. Then it's easy just to microwave them the next couple of times.

Snorlaxo · 11/04/2025 18:25

I keep frozen mini spring rolls and gyoza in my freezer which are fab for making an egg fried rice, ramen or stir fry more takeaway like.

unsync · 11/04/2025 18:26

If you are an Ocado customer, try anything from Picard. Ditto if you go to France, go to one of their shops. Picard makes the most delicious frozen food.

Flutterbyby · 11/04/2025 18:27

GooseAttack · 11/04/2025 18:15

I did try that once and couldn’t get the hang of it. Maybe I need to try again.

Some oil, fry the bottom, then add a little water and cover, medium heat. Perfection

Frozen chapattis and parathas. Just a minute or two in a frying pan and they taste amazing. A million times better than shop bought naan breads, which always seen really dry.

Make sure they are wet when you put them in the oven and they come out soft and delicious 😋

Enjoyed this thread for some more inspiration. Starting to use even more frozen since we had DC3 as I'm really struggling to cook for the elder two when DH isn't here in time (4 days a week).

Regulars for us: Richmond meat free sausages, Quorn nuggets, Asda meat free mince, Quorn pieces, sliced carrot, peas, edamame beans, Asda cheese and veg pies, all manner of veggie burgers, Birds Eye fishless fingers, Asda veggie fingers, garlic, ginger, chilli, mixed veg (like carrot/sweetcorn/peas/green beans etc together), jacket potatoes - McCains or Bannisters, diced onions, chopped mixed bell peppers - the latter two are only good in saucey dishes though. Too soggy for things like stir fry or fajitas etc.

GRCP · 11/04/2025 18:31

Spinach - I chuck a couple of lumps in every sauce I make.

Oh lovely!!

GRCP · 11/04/2025 18:32

Having a gin and lemon tonic with some frozen raspberries now

Mountainfrog · 11/04/2025 18:32

Ice kitchen Thai curry paste

asda extra special crème brûlée - impressed everyone at christmas

BobbyBiscuits · 11/04/2025 18:34

Frozen spinach is great for adding to stews, soups, making pizza, pies etc. you just need to make sure the water has been thoroughly squeezed out if using it for something non sauce based. Three pellets is the same amount as a whole bag of fresh.

I love hash browns too.

Frozen fish in breadcrumbs if it's decent quality can be good as well.

jewelcase · 11/04/2025 18:34

IKEA frozen vegetable balls. Honestly I could eat 50 in one go.

Do frozen onions fry ok? I imagine them to be quite wet

They do. I often freeze half a chopped onion when I don’t need it all.

Where do you get frozen soffrito?

I’ve been buying a big bag in Sainsbury’s for years. It’s called ‘vegetable base’. Tesco also do but it’s a smaller bag.
