What other brilliant frozen food have I missed?

So the recent thread resoundingly in favour of frozen mash made me buy some… and yes Mumsnet is quite correct.. totally converted. Which got be wondering what else have I missed?
My frozen foods are just the usual chips, peas and fishfingers. What other game changers are out there?

Frozen banana. Either cut up to berry size and added to yoghurt or cereal. Or whole/halved can be dipped in chocolate and nuts like an ice lolly. Great for when bananas are getting too ripe.

Iceland chicken skewers are the best and so quick and easy 12 minutes in the air fryer and they are done. They also come with all different flavourings my lot love them, when I’m having a lazy day I just do them with rice and salad and everyone is happy.
I also swear by their 5% fat beef mince and is cook from frozen so it makes life so much easier. I have problems with memory so it is a life saver some days when I forget to get something out of the freezer.

Frozen berries , bags of soffrito mix , steam bags of veggies , frozen pearl onions , frozen chilli / coriander / garlic

Soffritto definitely. Quick and handy.

CleverSwan · 13/04/2025 13:47

I try to buy the things that I know I'd end up throwing half away if I bought fresh...
Frozen cabbage, leeks, onions, peppers, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, spinach, peas (obviously)...
Also, blueberries and raspberries for slinging in porridge 😄 so much cheaper than buying fresh and excellent quality... ibuy most of the veggies from Iceland and fruits from Aldi.

ANDisayWhatsGoingon · 13/04/2025 13:54

I think soffritto has been mentioned about 50 times now, along with some other items. I wonder if anybody has anything new to add, or maybe the op has so many amazing suggestions now?

My go to frozen lunch options are the high protein chipotle pulled pork with black bean rice / naked chicken burrito / chicken tikka masala with chickpea rice from Lidl. Microwaves in 7 minutes and only £1.79 each.
They also do a salt and pepper chicken, teriyaki chicken and beef bolognese.

Is this Mumsnet? I thought we didn't eat UPF? Or ready meals or sweet food etc? Don't we make everything from scratch and serve it with a massive salad?

You've forgotten the roast chicken to go with it, that makes meals for the week for the whole household!

Frozen veg isn’t upf.

MoonWoman69 · 13/04/2025 20:20

Ooh seeing parathas just reminded me! Farm Foods do bags of 20, dry fry from frozen in a few minutes and they are lovely. I made a chicken curry yesterday and we had those with it, as we didn't fancy rice. Very tasty! It was part of the 3 for £10 range, so I got onion bhajis and duck spring rolls too, all lovely!

Yes, but ready meals, frozen pastries etc all are....

I personally am not going zero upf as I would find it too difficult, unless I never want to eat a croissant again (there are no artisan bakeries where I am).

Very few recommendations on this thread are for anything other than vegetables and fruit. Which are healthier frozen than they are fresh!

I suspect that frozen pastries have fewer additives than those you buy in packets on the shelves, again, because the freezing does the preserving without artificial help.

Frozen garlic, edamame beans & roasting vegetables and stir fry veggies - love using them for a midweek supper when I’ve been in the office!

Iceland do a number of these seafood casserole type things. They are delicious and taste posh homemade. Either use as a pasta sauce, or serve with crusty bread. And are pretty much none UPF.

Veggie base mix - its carrot, celery and onion finely chopped. Saves so much time on busy days. Also frozen stir fry veg is handy to have in and prawns too.

Where do you buy this pls?

Quite a lot of fat and salt, does it taste very salty?

Onions & red peppers- game changer as I used to dread chopping onions due to sore eyes.

I buy fresh chopped onions for that same reason.

Frozen spinach, it comes in squashed blocks. I bought it for feta and spinach bake but now I chuck it in nearly everything! Especially anything with pasta

@Sayithowiseeit can you tell me more about the feta and spinach bake, please?

Sure, it's just what I call it, I use feta, spinach, leeks, garlic and cheddar all mixed together, then lay some filo pastry in layers usually in a tin, melted butter between the layers, bung the mixture in, fold the filo over the top. Then I put a filo sheet on top scrunched up a bit, melted butter. Its amazing. My kids love it

@Molecule this looks so handy. I’ll keep an eye out for it in my local Iceland store!

@Sayithowiseeit thank you so much! I’m saving this for meal prep next week.

IJWMM · 14/04/2025 01:25

Am definitely making notes from this thread!

I recently had frozen M&S lime and chilli prawns - 8 mins in the air fryer. Served with an individual pack of frozen rice and veg done in the microwave. Definitely going on my list of very quick and tasty meals.

IJWMM · 14/04/2025 01:27

And I second, third, fourth those recommending frozen diced onion - honestly can’t remember the last time I chopped an onion.

IJWMM · 14/04/2025 01:30

And Aldi’s beer battered onion rings - 10 mins in air fryer on max Crisp setting, they’re lovely.

I tried some from Tesco - turned out weirdly mushy. And I tried M&S the other night, but they’re really thin and a bit stringy.
