What other brilliant frozen food have I missed?

So the recent thread resoundingly in favour of frozen mash made me buy some… and yes Mumsnet is quite correct.. totally converted. Which got be wondering what else have I missed?
My frozen foods are just the usual chips, peas and fishfingers. What other game changers are out there?

Mini danish pastries - marks and Spencer’s or Tesco. Delish for a weekend treat

Oh and frozen parsnips are OK. But frozen roast potatoes are little nuggets of disappointment. Frozen yorkies are good (especially the batter ones), frozen stuffing is not.

M&S frozen Maris piper roast potatoes are lovely.
I don’t usually like frozen ones but definitely try these

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 12/04/2025 21:45

@lovemycbf sadly they aren’t vegetarian though

Melbourne55 · 12/04/2025 21:48

Adding to the list:

M&S soffrito mix - so handy to use as a base for bolognese, lasagne etc
Quorn crispy nuggets - taste absolutely identical to McDonalds ‘real’ chicken ones
Albert Bartlett rooster potato chips - the nicest oven chips by far

Blueberrypot · 12/04/2025 22:00

McCain gastro triple cooked chips are very nice.
M&S individual chicken breasts in the freezer very handy. Quick defrost too.

Sainsbury’s frozen fruits, mango, raspberries, nectarines, pop a handful of each into a tub to defrost in the fridge and then add some canned mandarins, take a portion every night and add fresh grapes, kiwi, apple etc for an economic fruit salad, I was binning so much fresh fruit this has helped me save some money

Edited

I love this frozen fruit - defrosted and mixed with our morning porridge. So tasty and so economical.

Youngs Basa fillets, salt snd pepper or herby..delicious with frozen cauliflower cheese/chips/]peas. And no plastic either!

obviously ! but millions of people are and I got quite interested at the suggestion of a decent frozen roast potato, it’s probably the beef dripping that makes them nice and crispy to be fair

deste · 12/04/2025 23:29

Frozen cauliflower cheese from Aldi.

There are parathas and there are parathas. https://www.ocado.com/products/shana-original-paratha-597851011?srsltid=AfmBOopj8colm7sVkeG4_D7ikjwRK3JSiY25xshxYYmahQKc3z3dkwyE

In the winter I buy British frozen berries (raspberries and blueberries) Lovely.

Frozen petit pois, of course. Frozen edamame. Frozen croissants https://www.ocado.com/products/picard-mini-croissants-494534011

I really love these parathas too

Itsu frozen gyoza are really good - usually on offer every now and then so I stock up. Don’t follow the steaming option, that makes them soggy, just shallow fry.

Steaming must be where I went wrong, I thought they were horrible! I'll try them again.

petitfromage · 13/04/2025 08:27

I've mastered this. Sesame or veg oil, pan fry not too hot on all sides until golden brown. Have boiling water in a jug at the side and a pan lid that snuggly fits the frying pan then whilst holding lid just a couple of inches over pan pour in about two tablespoons of water with the other hand (be careful it will sizzle and spit so be quick) and immediately put on lid. Leave to steam (heat still on) for about two mins. Remove lid carefully in case of any residual steam. Serve with m & s ponzu dipping sauce. YUM!

Any additives in this frozen mash, though?

No. That's the great thing about frozen stuff. It doesn't need preservatives. Freezing does the preserving.

Slimmermama · 13/04/2025 08:53

Iceland do a selection of frozen pasta dishes. Chorizo, cheesy chicken and broccoli, chicken and bacon.

Tip bag which is for 2 people into frying pan with a tsp of oil. 16 minutes later it's cooked. £2 a bag so that's £1 per person !

It’s not so much preservatives I’m worried about but anything added for taste and texture. Some chips have stuff like dextrin and thickeners added in.

glowfrog · 13/04/2025 09:43

@saraclaratried to edit my post but it wouldn’t work - Quick Look on Sainsbury’s website and it looks like theirs at least doesn’t! So I might try that sometime.

The Tesco and Waitrose version are free of any additives, too.

How does the frozen mash work? Doing an Ocado order this week… thanks

So they have aunt Bessie’s and Picard - any know which one is better. Both currently in my basket.

Lovemycat2023 · 13/04/2025 09:55

Tesco finest frozen tuna steaks - more of a decent size than other frozen tuna. Fresh tuna steaks are far too expensive sadly.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 13/04/2025 10:33

@NewAgeNewMe
It’s usually in small ‘sausage’ shaped pieces, so decant the required amount in a bowl and microwave it, whisk with fork add splash of milk/cream/butter pepper if needed ( but that’s totally optional )

Picard is probably better than Aunt Bessie’s though I have not tried it. Bessie’s is nice though very small pieces

EDIT according to Ocado reviews Picard needs to be seasoned and the prep method looks different

NewAgeNewMe · 13/04/2025 10:53

Ahh ok thank you

I’d probably only use it for freezer meals which I prep for when I’m not feeling well (more often than not)

Markovenchip · 13/04/2025 11:22

Frozen hasselback potatoes, like small potatoes with skin on, and cuts through them, love them, plus Cathedral City brand have branched out beyond just cheese, and do lasagnes, and plenty more yummy cheesy stuff !
