What other brilliant frozen food have I missed?

So the recent thread resoundingly in favour of frozen mash made me buy some… and yes Mumsnet is quite correct.. totally converted. Which got be wondering what else have I missed?
My frozen foods are just the usual chips, peas and fishfingers. What other game changers are out there?

My friend raves about frozen jacket potatoes. Not sure if she buys McCain or just any old supermarket brand ones.

I haven't tried them so no idea if they're as fabulous as she says.

Agree these are fab. I buy McCain’s. Done in 4.5 mins.

I second the support for the veggie base mix - a bag of onion, carrot and celery all diced very small. It pads out bologneses, chillis and soup, and is a great way of adding hidden veg. I don't even like celery, but can't taste it.
Currently available in our local Sainsbury's- i seriously did a little happy dance when it appeared (again). Please can more people start buying it so that there is ongoing demand and it doesn't disappear again?

I buy lots of it - it's called base mix in Sainsburys. Sofrito in Waitrose and Morrisons discontinued it last year. Its my base for so many meals and soups - I truly would be lost without it. That and the frozen world food garlic are staple cooking ingredients in this house.
I also buy frozen cherries - makes the best overnight oats.

A fast and easy soup recipe made entirely with frozen veg -- chopped onions, spinach portions and broccoli florets.
Fry chopped onions for five minutes or so in a large saucepan with olive oil, (they don't seem to give out any liquid) add half a dozen balls of the spinach (or more) and about half of a 1-kg bag of the broccoli. Add about a litre of chicken or vegetable stock (Stock Pots are fine) and simmer for 15-20 mins until the veg is soft.
Go in with the stick blender and blitz until smooth, check seasoning and serve with some crumbled Stilton on top. Other cheeses are available.
(If the soup is too thick for your liking you can add milk, gives extra creaminess.)

I also make a from the freezer soup - frozen onion, garlic, whole bag frozen mushrooms, chicken stock (light on water). Blitz when soft - add milk. Can also add nutmeg pepper, dried mushrooms and a slugg of vermouth if are feeling fancy.

@BlumminFreezin I am even lazier than that - DS6 loves “purple porridge” which is porridge made on the stove (you could do instant in the microwave) with frozen berries stirred through for the last few minutes of cooking. Anything that has blackberries or redcurrants in the mix makes the porridge go an extremely vibrant purple.

Same in my household, kids love the 'purple porridge!'. I throw in a couple of frozen berries after making the porridge which cools it down quickly as always a rush in the mornings! Great way to add in some fruit in the mornings.

Yep, takes a while but it’s a bung it in the oven and stick on a box set job. My go to when DH is away for a lazy evening.

Doesn’t take quite as long if you pop it into an oven dish and microwave first thus seperating the florets, while you’re heating up the oven . Much quicker.

Morrisons do vegetable base because I buy it.

Delia Smith recommends Aunt Bessie's frozen mashed potatoes.

Iceland's Luxury Moussaka is surprisingly good.

Not when it's Birds Eye etc.

Most convenience foods are full of shite.

Frozen doesn't necessarily mean what you're thinking of as convenience food - but frozen vegetables and fruit ARE very convenient!

M&S do frozen cookie dough blocks, just slice into chunks and bake - incredible! Also garlic and herb frozen butter disks are really nice and very handy.

I don’t get posts like this. What is the point of putting the OP’s comment into AI and generating an answer.

If the OP wanted to ask ChatGPT she could have done that herself. She wanted real life recommendation from real people.

LushLemonTart · 12/04/2025 09:35

@JamesWebbSpaceTelescope maybe they're a bot?

But what would the point of a bot be on munsnet? You can’t gain followers to then spam with advertising. Just posting boring content isn’t even going to get your any enjoyment of trolling. Just why bother?

LushLemonTart · 12/04/2025 09:40

No idea? Apparently there are though?

Vegetable base from Morrisons ie finely diced onions, celery and carrots

less healthily - waffle fries. I love them

I think in some supermarkets that’s called Soffrito.

Lovely frozen Elephant chapatis in sainsburys

Unfortunately, the (huge!) Sainsbury's we get our deliveries from doesn't stock them. Location seems to determine stock and they've clearly decided that people in the Scottish borders won't buy them. 😠

Bloody annoying.

Yes - the posh ones call it soffrito. Normal ones use English.
