What other brilliant frozen food have I missed?

nahthatsnotforme · 11/04/2025 17:33

So the recent thread resoundingly in favour of frozen mash made me buy some… and yes Mumsnet is quite correct.. totally converted. Which got be wondering what else have I missed?
My frozen foods are just the usual chips, peas and fishfingers. What other game changers are out there?

Does frozen spinach not make things watery?

No. Defrost it in the microwave and squeeze the water out. Or, if you're putting it in a simmering dish the water will evaporate.

I defrost it and put it in a curry. It’s fine like that. Once defrosted you can squeeze the liquid out if you want to.

They are awful, really dry! Is this the same friend?! I was recommended them too 🤯

You’re cooking them too long! I air fry the McCain ones and if I put them in too hot and/or too long, they do go dry and minging. Cook them right and I honestly prefer them to cooked from raw jackets!

Wiltingasparagusfern · 11/04/2025 21:37

Frozen dim sum! Especially prawn dumplings - from any Chinese supermarket. Bit of chilli oil/peanut rayu/soy sauce and some spring onions. Total joy. I chuck them in ramen and stir fries, too.

Also yes, Picard and parathas!

Yes! we have defosted frozen cherries, with pale meat, turkey chicken, guinea fowl,
or even better, duck, a Clafouti Limousin, or as you say, for breakfast, with muesli,
for pud with Mackie vanilla ice cream and thin home made shortbread,
versatile and often on offer

Honorable mention for Mackies..😍

Yes we recently bought a pack of frozen parathas - they are so handy to have in, cook so quickly and taste great!

Try them warm with some jam for breakfast...delicious
had to stop buying then because they're quite calorific .
😋

BlumminFreezin · 11/04/2025 21:41

Frozen mixed berries (lidl) or single frozen fruits from Farmfoods.

They're great over porridge or weetabix (any cereal really), mixed with yoghurt, in a smoothie, on top of ice cream.

You're supposed to leave them defrost for X hours. No one here is organised enough for that 😂. We bung them in the microwave for 30 seconds or so, until they're defrosted but not warm.

I even make 'healthy jam' with lidl mixed berries. Put some in a bowl and microwave the beejeesus out of them until hot. Mash with a fork. Add a decent squirt of honey and stir through. Microwave a bit more until the mix is boiling. Pull out, tip in a cold bowl and leave it to cool for a few minutes - it semi-sets! Not as hard as actual jam but enough to spread over toast without a mess. Ds3 loves it and it feels much better than giving him actual jam.

GooseAttack · 11/04/2025 21:47

@BlumminFreezin I am even lazier than that - DS6 loves “purple porridge” which is porridge made on the stove (you could do instant in the microwave) with frozen berries stirred through for the last few minutes of cooking. Anything that has blackberries or redcurrants in the mix makes the porridge go an extremely vibrant purple.

Really want to try the frozen chapattis & parathas, but so far can only find garlic parathas in Morrisons (nothing at all in Sainsbury's). 🙄

Hopefully Aldi or Lidl will yield results.

Tesco sell plain , spring onion and garlic Humza parathra.
They are all nice .

Hfjfjfjfjfj · 11/04/2025 21:59

Any veg where the fresh version goes off easily. Broccoli, cauliflower, etc.

MayaPinion · 11/04/2025 22:05

Frozen pizza cooks better than fresh and costs a lot less.

Waitrose sell them - I bought them on offer and the pistchio, we ate
wth tiny spoons to make them last longer, lovely

nearest Waitrose is about 100 miles away. Sainsbury’s don't sell them. I’m bereft.
yes to the tiny spoons!

notthe1Parrot · 11/04/2025 22:08

I like the Waitrose frozen mash, but what really 'lifts' it, is a spoonful or more of wholegrain mustard stirred in at the end.

Lottie6712 · 11/04/2025 22:10

Ramona's falafel!

Loub1987 · 11/04/2025 22:11

Frozen pre chopped garlic. I cook a lot of Italian food and sick of my fingers smelling of garlic.

Chicken skewers from Iceland.

diced onions.

garlic.

chilli

aldi do frozen hash browns similar to McDonald’s…

Yes the Aldi "dupes" for some things are really good! The hash browns are really good.

Grammarnut · 11/04/2025 22:19

Ready prepared butternut squash. Frozen blueberries.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 11/04/2025 22:27

Frozen green beans, brocoli and spinach. Comes out best if you steam in microwave.

I don't eat them but hub and DD like peas and sweetcorn and carrots.

Dh is a big beige food fan so he'd say anything at Iceland 🤣

My friend raves about frozen jacket potatoes. Not sure if she buys McCain or just any old supermarket brand ones.

I haven't tried them so no idea if they're as fabulous as she says.

Yes. They are very good.

mediummumma · 11/04/2025 22:45

M&S frozen ready-to-bake choc chip cookies. We bake these for a few minutes less than advised so they’re soft and gooey and serve with ice cream for a quick and delicious dessert.

Lovely frozen Elephant chapatis in sainsburys

Maitri108 · 11/04/2025 22:55

@ilovecardigans Morrisons do quite a few. I buy plain, garlic and mixed vegetables.

Ecocool · 11/04/2025 22:58

Have to say I've not had a frozen baked potato I've enjoyed.

Delphigirl · 11/04/2025 22:58

Waitrose frozen Bramley apple slices. I always have a couple of boxes in the freezer and you can then always make apple sauce or crumble when you want it.
