Does anyone else absolutely hate a head massage at the hair dressers?

I get so cross repressing the urge to tell them to just fucking wash my hair that my blood pressure goes through the roof. God I hate it.

God yes, totally with you.

SomewhereinSuberbia · 11/04/2025 16:46

Yes I know what you mean, I say no thanks now, I just want a hair cut.

QuillBill · 11/04/2025 16:46

Yes, I can’t stand it.

It’s the reason I now only ever book a dry cut.

One place massaged my head so vigorously-with her nails-I couldn’t brush my hair for days afterwards because my scalp was so sore.

FoxRedPuppy · 11/04/2025 16:47

It’s my favourite bit! And it annoys me that mine ask now so I have to actively ask for it. Who doesn’t love a head massage. I could happily fall asleep there.

MsFogi · 11/04/2025 16:47

Oh no I absolutely love it (if it is a good head massage). However I hate it if it is some pathetic half-arsed tick box head massage.

Hadalifeonce · 11/04/2025 16:47

Yep, always have to ask them to stop if I forget to tell them in advance.

alongtimeagoandfaraway · 11/04/2025 16:49

I tell mine every time that I don’t like it and they stop. Tbh it does annoy me a bit that I have to tell them as I’ve been going there every few weeks for more than a decade. It’s totally counter productive so far as I am concerned, just makes me tense and irritable.

Pandimoanymum · 11/04/2025 16:49

Can’t you just say you don’t want the massage bit as you’re not keen? I’m sure they won’t care one way or the other. I can’t stand having my feet massaged so when I get my toenails done I just ask them not to rub that oil in. They don’t mind.

AffIt · 11/04/2025 16:51

God, yes.

Fortunately my place has their juniors trained to always ask: I decline, politely.

One young woman absolutely took the huff at this once and 'washed' my hair so hard I felt as though I'd been through a car wash.

I didn't say anything at the time (more fool me) but when I didn't see her on my next visit, asked my hairdresser, who owns the salon - apparently she had been let go as her soft skills weren't great... !

Magnalux · 11/04/2025 16:51

Yes I think I have a sensitive scalp or something because there is nothing relaxing about it. I hate having my hair washed, the basin hurts my neck, my hair gets tugged! I find it so uncomfortable/sore

RosesAndHellebores · 11/04/2025 16:51

I just say no thank you, please just wash my hair. It has never been an issue.

Coffeeishot · 11/04/2025 16:51

The girl at my hairdressers always asks and I always say no, its supposed to be relaxing, relaxing my eye !

eurochick · 11/04/2025 16:52

It’s the best bit! It feels amazing!

TokyoKyoto · 11/04/2025 16:55

I love it! But it feels perhaps a bit too intimate. I just bury that thought and get on with the relaxation. I'd have one every day if I could. We have a new Head Spa in town, was thinking of going.

GoodVibesHere · 11/04/2025 16:56

HATE it!

Adviceneededpleasehelpme · 11/04/2025 16:57

I hate it. Also never know whether to open or close my eyes 😂

nocoolnamesleft · 11/04/2025 16:58

Feels horrible. Especially if they’ve got those long scratchy fake nails. Shudder.

blueshoes · 11/04/2025 16:59

Yes. Worse than the head message is the neck and upper shoulder massage.

It is assault.

EmpressaurusKitty · 11/04/2025 17:02

The head massage is my favourite bit. The thing I always firmly refuse is the blow dry apart from a few quick puffs, because my hair normally just gives up the ghost & lies down flat at that point.

One pillock used straighteners, the last thing I need, & when I objected he said ‘Oh, I’m only doing it a bit.’ I didn’t go back.

Same. Eyes closed makes it look as if I’m enjoying it a bit too much; eyes open makes me look like a psycho.

Mandarinaduck · 11/04/2025 17:08

Hate a head massage.
Hate it if they take longer than about 30 sec when washing. I just want the thing done and to get out.
Hate any kind of product.
Hate any kind of blowdry except a functional / natural one to just get the hair dry.

I'd rather go to the dentist.

DinoLil · 11/04/2025 17:10

Ooooooooh I'm just melting at the thought of a head massage....!

Smokesandeats · 11/04/2025 17:12

Hate it. It’s part of the reason that I have a mobile hairdresser coming to the house for a dry haircut. I don’t like anyone touching my scalp and I don’t like any kind of heat near my head. I haven’t been inside a hair salon for 15 years and I’m much happier for it!

floranginajelly · 11/04/2025 17:12

Absolutely
