Does anyone else absolutely hate a head massage at the hair dressers?

I get so cross repressing the urge to tell them to just fucking wash my hair that my blood pressure goes through the roof. God I hate it.

I like it but I have been going to my hairdressers for 15 years so they know how i like it.
they have just invested in a Japanese Head Spa, not entirely sure what it involves but I am booked in for one next week

Sossusvlei · 11/04/2025 18:57

Hate it. But I just say ‘no massage thanks’.

Yellowsubmarineunderthesea · 11/04/2025 18:58

Not alone do I hate head massages I hate actually getting my hair washed, then waiting for styling so long they have to wet my hair all over again. During covid dh started cutting my hair and it's continued since. He has a great eye for it and I've had friends ask him for a trim. My hair is dead straight and very fine, I've saved a fortune over the years.

I remember the first time about 15 years ago and hated it! Gradually I came to like it and now it's like a drug craving 🤣Unfortunately my lovely hair washer is now a stylist and the new hair washer is not as good at massaging nor hair washing. Shame. Never have a blow dry, just a wet cut then straighten at home.

WhineAndWine1 · 11/04/2025 19:12

No I love it. I’m disappointed when I don’t get one!

JoyousEagle · 11/04/2025 19:17

At the place I go, they ask if you’d like one. I always say no because I can’t bear it. If they didn’t ask I’d ask them to stop.

It's not fucking assault 😂 drama lama.

Just ask politely to skip and massages. It's not hard.

I do. It is assault to do it without asking in advance. It is not hard.

I've seen a variety of videos reaching from a relaxing head massage to full-on water boarding. May the odds be in your favour lol

DeanElderberry · 11/04/2025 19:52

Hate it. Strictly dry cut, no hair dryer, minimal pawing and faffing. As physical experiences go, it's on a par with the dentist scaling my teeth. Necessary from time to time (I have short hair) but no fun.

Walkingwithdinosaurs · 11/04/2025 20:42

Absolutely hate everything about getting my hair done:

Boring small talk
freezing cold salon
freezing cold product sitting in my hair for an hour while they go and tend to someone else
no tea or coffee offered
sore neck leaning over that hard part on the sink while they wash my hair too many times
more crap chat
cuts my hair to their liking even though I protest
£159 for the pleasure
then wonders why I don’t go more often… 🤦‍♀️

Vitrolinsanity · 11/04/2025 21:21

I have learned to say “please, no head massage”. But it’s like kicking a puppy.

Mikart · 11/04/2025 21:31

I love it! Dh massages my head every night!

Er, no it isn't an assault. It is perhaps an imposition, but it isn't an assault.

That is being rather melodramatic.

@Walkingwithdinosaurs why don't you go to a different salon? They aren't all like that.

Honestly, the fuss some people make about goint to the hairdresser is ridiculous.

Er, yes. Where it is done with unnecessary and uninvited force, it is regarded an 'assault'. Sorry the word offends your sensitivities.

This. ^ How ridiculously embarrassing and dramatic to call it that!

If you don't want a head massage, just tell the hairdresser for f*cksake !!🙄

Oh what book is feathery stroking from again?? Is it a Marian Keyes??

Definitely from Marian Keyes. I think it's from Rachel's Holiday.

Letstheriveranswer · 11/04/2025 22:11

I absolutely love them. Happy to have all the unwanted head massages gathered up and sent my way. Even better if there's just the right amount of nail involved.

Feathery face stroking would drive me nuts though!

Pricelessadvice · 11/04/2025 22:12

I love it! It’s the best bit!
Our hairdresser uses a backwash rather than a sink and chair. It’s far more comfortable.
The head massage is never long enough for me, I could lie there all day having it done.

Porkychops · 11/04/2025 22:12

Hell yes, I used to endure it as I was too polite to stop them and then get a headache from it. I hope somewhere more down market now and they don't do it.

Screamingabdabz · 11/04/2025 22:24

I told my hairdresser last time that I don’t really like it and she responded like I was the most unusual client she’d ever come across. She was really shocked.

I wanted to say ‘just wash the fucking hair or don’t. Just spray it and damp it down. I already washed it in the shower this morning. I don’t need it to be a big performance. Just cut my sodding hair so I can get out and we can all get on with our day. A haircut. That’s what I’ve asked for. Not a happy ending.’

Coffeeheaven · 11/04/2025 22:27

What! It's the best bit! I get pissed off if someone different washes my hair and they don't do it!

Edited

I do. Chill.

Cosyvibes · 11/04/2025 22:28

Hate getting my hair washed and the massage. Then when it's done and they half arse put the hair towel on and drips are plopping down my face... for the love of God!!! Can we get a better system it's all an awkward faff!

SirChenjins · 11/04/2025 22:29

Hate it - and hate any sort of massage from a stranger. The idea of someone I don’t know rubbing my head or body is hideous.

DeeDeeDo · 11/04/2025 22:30

I always say no.

i used to be a junior. You made my day if you said no. 🤣
