Does anyone else absolutely hate a head massage at the hair dressers?

I get so cross repressing the urge to tell them to just fucking wash my hair that my blood pressure goes through the roof. God I hate it.

I like having my hair washed, including the head massage. But as an adult, if I didn't, I'd ask them not to do it. YABU.

Hate it. Luckily my hairdresser knows me so well she knows not to do it, and the juniors do too.

I don’t know where the trend for head massages in hairdressers first came from. I’m in the “this is so cringe, I want the ground to swallow me up” camp. And all those on here advising us to just tell them we don’t want one. Have you even met a British person? We’ll walk out the hairdresser with a bright pink mullet and say “thanks, lovely” rather than say what we really think.Grin

BeMintFatball · 11/04/2025 18:12

Love it . If my husband could learn how my hairdresser does it he would be treated to more frequent sex 😂

EffortlesslyDecluttering · 11/04/2025 18:15

Another hater here, I ask them just to wash and not do it.

cunoyerjudowel · 11/04/2025 18:16

I hate it and just ask not to do it- it literally makes my skin crawl- I am ND tough

Dillydollydingdong · 11/04/2025 18:16

I love it. So relaxing.

Same. Eyes closed makes it look as if I’m enjoying it a bit too much; eyes open makes me look like a psycho.

Haha, now I'll start over thinking this too

Definitely this. And tip.

I don’t like it and I once also had one where the hairdresser then did a load of feathery stroking over my face which made me more tense than anything else that’s ever happened to me.

PersonalBest · 11/04/2025 18:21

Cynic17 · 11/04/2025 17:16

I just politely ask them not to do it. That's all that's needed.

I know. I would feel churlish though. Maybe I'll try. They never ask, just do it. So I would have to raise the issue. Awkward!

I always wondered why they ask - I thought everyone must want a head massage! Now I know. Can't imagine they'd care if you say no - less work for them.

Oh yuck. I can’t stand anyone touching my face, particularly the feathery stroking . I think my worst was once having a massage they put their fingers in my ears - I was almost sick on the spot.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 11/04/2025 18:25

I hate it too. I just say no head massage thanks. Mind you, I've been with the same salon for a few years now and they know my preference, so I don't have to bother any longer.

Galaxybisc · 11/04/2025 18:27

I love it

ginasevern · 11/04/2025 18:29

I've never had a head massage and, judging by the comments, it doesn't sound great. But I'd happily pay for someone to brush my hair for hours. I love that.

blueshoes · 11/04/2025 16:59

Yes. Worse than the head message is the neck and upper shoulder massage.

It is assault.

I told one to pack it in as it was fucking painful..exact words!!

BinChicken1 · 11/04/2025 18:36

Yup hate it. Hate any kind of massage to be honest. Stop fucking touching me

BinChicken1 · 11/04/2025 18:36

Oh what book is feathery stroking from again?? Is it a Marian Keyes??

You are overthinking this. It is really not churlish to ask politely for a simple hairwash with no massage.

Do you struggle to communicate with people in general?

I never thought it possible to cringe so badly for a person I don't no about an event I never witnessed but yet here we are

Well, I obvious struggled to communicate that this was lighthearted!
