Does anyone else absolutely hate a head massage at the hair dressers?

I get so cross repressing the urge to tell them to just fucking wash my hair that my blood pressure goes through the roof. God I hate it.

It's the scrabby nails I can't stand. Now every one has nail extensions on, they really scrape into your head. I've had to tell the stylist to stop because it's so painful.

Love it as long as it’s gentle and they are not pushing the back of my neck into the sink edge

OMG I absolutely love it!!

So relaxing. I also love the foot rub bit if I get a pedicure.

I should have been a cat...

I have found my tribe ! I absolutely hate it. I asked one of the hair washers once, she said it’s about 50/50 if people like it or not. I can now never change salon as they have written down my preference not to have it done.

Cynic17 · 11/04/2025 17:16

I just politely ask them not to do it. That's all that's needed.

No. I love it.

Just use your voice and ask them not to. It isn't difficult to do this in a polite and non confrontational way.

Gosh, I wish my local salon did a head massage with my hair wash - I’d be in heaven! I used to go to another place that gave an absolutely gorgeous massage every time - I’ve moved away from the area now but it would almost be worth travelling back for…

Sparsely · 11/04/2025 17:24

I can't stand it either. I feel like they are messing up my nicely ordered mind..

DrNo007 · 11/04/2025 17:26

Yes and I tell them not to do it. I don’t want anyone scrubbing my head like that. They don’t mind at all.

doodleschnoodle · 11/04/2025 17:27

I love it! I regularly go for Indian head massages too. I find it so relaxing.

Hotafternoon · 11/04/2025 17:34

Yes me! One of the reasons I use a mobile hairdresser now, she doesn't do them.

It used to make me feel sleepy but my neck was so uncomfortable due to the gap in the basin where your head went.

I always refused much to their surprise when offered it.

ItGhoul · 11/04/2025 17:35

Wait, do people's hairdressers just do a head massage without asking if you want one, then?!

At the place I go to, they ask if you'd like a head massage or not. They wouldn't ever just start massaging without asking. I usually say yes because I get tension headaches and anything that loosens my scalp muscles is helpful, but I've heard plenty other customers say no.

Mind you, the salon also offers silent appointments, mirrorless appointments and appointments upstairs in a private room if you can't handle too much noise and bustle too. So they're big on inclusion and making the process as easy as possible for people who don't necessarily like going to the hairdresser.

PrettayGood · 11/04/2025 17:39

I love it, you loons! I practically dribble.

SmoothEncounter · 11/04/2025 17:40

Mine doesn’t do the head massage at the sink. They do it afterwards when back in the chair. Much prefer it this way as I don’t find leaning back for the sink very comfortable. I can relax much more sitting back in the comfy salon chair.

TennesseeStella · 11/04/2025 17:40

Yes, I absolutely hate it. I ask them politely every time not to do it.

MummytoE · 11/04/2025 17:43

Yes I hate it. I have very long super porous hair so am in the seat for quite a while anyway. The back of my neck is in agony and just when I think I'm getting to get up they start doing a head massage. It does the exact opposite of relaxing me, I'm literally squirming in my chair to relieve the pressure on my neck

StanfreyPock · 11/04/2025 17:43

Hate it too, scraping nails and sink edge digging into neck, awful! Now go to basic hairdresser round the corner for cheap & cheerful trim and very happy with that. Glad it's not just me...

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 11/04/2025 17:46

Not something I enjoy but I don’t get upset about it I just say “can I have a simple hair wash, I don’t enjoy the massage” 🤷‍♀️

olderbutwiser · 11/04/2025 17:49

100000%. Recently had one as part of a whole body massage on a posh holiday in India and it was all I could do not to leap up screaming and run away in my little paper knickers.

Glitchymn1 · 11/04/2025 17:51

Just tell them if you don’t like it - I bloody love it and could fall asleep.

Zippidydoodah · 11/04/2025 17:53

I hate it and find it really painful. You e inspired me to ask for no massage next time!

Pennyplant19 · 11/04/2025 17:55

Yes! Absolutely hate it!

TourangaLeila · 11/04/2025 17:59

blueshoes · 11/04/2025 16:59

Yes. Worse than the head message is the neck and upper shoulder massage.

It is assault.

It's not fucking assault 😂 drama lama.

Just ask politely to skip and massages. It's not hard.

FourEyesGood · 11/04/2025 17:02

Same. Eyes closed makes it look as if I’m enjoying it a bit too much; eyes open makes me look like a psycho.

😂😂😂 Exactly!!
