Velour Leggings for a funeral?

MrBallensWife · 22/03/2025 16:36

My ex partners dad passed away recently,he is my daughters granddad so I want to go to the funeral to support my daughter (12) and also because I was very fond of him and we got on well.
I've bought a lovely smart blazer and top to wear in black and now I'm struggling for trousers.I have some brand new black velour/velvet leggings but is it inappropriate to wear leggings to a funeral do you think?

It’s showing respect not just turning up as though you have just come from work or just pulled on some cheap leggings.

So you can only show respect in expensive clothes then.

Funerals are not about what you wear, it's attendence to respect for someone you loved. It doesn't matter what you wear, it's about you turning up. At my mums funeral, some people turned up straight from work on high viz jackets! It was lovely. Wear your leggings x

This! Could not agree more.

Anonymousemouses · 22/03/2025 20:23

I have a feeling I wore leggings to my baby daughter's funeral. I still had my huge baby bump and wore leggings all the time.

I had no idea that I would be considered a "chav" or inappropriate. I was in grief.

I have no idea what anyone else wore, I was in grief, so didn't give a shit what anyone wore (as long as they weren't naked/in a clown outfit, even then it may have lightened the mood).

I have no idea what anyone wore to my dad's or brother's funerals, or my grandparents, or anyone else's.

I haven't been to a funeral where I was more interested in policing fashion than paying my respects to the deceased.

Whateverfloatsyourgoat · 22/03/2025 20:26

You choose if you want to wear leggings or put the effort in for something with dignity and restraint as befits the occasion.

this is too funny. Leggings - you harpy! Show some restraint! A skirt bestows dignity!

where are these bizarre rules written for future reference @BarneyRonson

in the real world op, if you look smart and are comfortable ignore the weirdos on here.

Sorry OP, leggings aren’t at all appropriate for a funeral at all. I don’t agree with the above poster that just turning up after throwing on whatever is a show of respect. A satin skirt or wide leg trousers are a good shout.

Is it the inches of extra fabric that transform a distrustful trouser into a respectful one? Would bell bottoms be super respectful I guess?

Comedycook · 22/03/2025 20:31

I read on here once that what you wear to a funeral should be forgettable...no one should look back and remember what you were wearing.

FKAT · 22/03/2025 20:37

Sorry about your loss and also about the loss of your DS OP. Flowers

I too love my black velvet leggings but I would probably ask your ex for advice on the dress code - different families have different parameters. I always favour more formal and am often the more sober / dressed up end of the spectrum.

I agree with the Irish PP who said having a standby formal funeral dress and coat is always worthwhile.

Not sure. Depends on the family. I will never forget my father's funeral - the hottest day of the year and we all walked through the village behind his hearse to the church - me, sisters, mum, aunts, cousins - women of all ages - all in full make-up, black dresses and heels. It felt really dramatic and appropriate for him. He loved a gangster film.

Lampros · 22/03/2025 20:58

NHS porters who went back to work afterwards.

Apologies that was a reply to another poster x

Thankyou 🩷
We are popping over to see my exdp's Stepmum on Tuesday so I'll ask her if she would mind but I don't think she will if I'm honest.Family wise there's only exDp,his Stepmum and some of their friends and neighbours.Ex Dp is an only child and his Stepmum has no surviving relatives so most of the attendees will be elderly friends of theirs.
I usually do have a 'funeral outfit' but I've lost weight and intend to lose more so I don't want to spend too much if I can help it.Im popping to town on Monday so I'll have a look for trousers then x

No greater respect than this.

Leggings, velour or otherwise, are not suitable to be worn at a funeral imo.
But I may be old fashioned, as it absolutely screams disrespect to me.

MarchHare339 · 22/03/2025 21:04

I was at a funeral recently and was shocked at how casually many people were dressed. Trainers, casual clothes etc. I wouldn’t consider leggings appropriate for a funeral but others would.

tillytoodles1 · 22/03/2025 21:05

No, just no. A skirt or trousers, but not leggings.

Flyboyblue · 22/03/2025 21:06

Of course they are appropriate. Most funerals are casual affairs these days. Gone are the days of mourning clothes.

You’re wrong. It’s a question of showing respect and dressing appropriately.

But can you voice why smart leggings are not appropriate. Just write it out clearly.

LittleBigHead · 22/03/2025 21:10

Of course they’re inappropriate (as well as being tacky whatever the occasion).

No it's not. It's about saying goodbye to a loved one.Not a competition to see who has the best funeral outfit.

Indianajet · 22/03/2025 17:19

They sound fine - some people are very judgemental.

Bit unfair, the OP asked for opinions and she got them, just because you disagree doesn't mean PP's are judgemental.

RedRiverShore5 · 22/03/2025 21:11

On MN funeral attire is definitely a competition

Would you wear them to an interview?

Flyboyblue · 22/03/2025 21:13

I can just imagine all the MNetters attending funerals in long black dresses and black veiled hats.

In the real world, no one cares much.Wear what you feel comfortable in.

You’re not wrong, pyjamas and period pants would be competitive on MN.
