Tesla cars: are you getting rid of yours?

CrazyOldMe · 13/03/2025 21:16

Disclaimer: I can't afford a Tesla anyway!

However, I do know of several very decent people who own Tesla cars. They paid a lot for them and know that they can only sell them at a loss. It doesn't seem fair really.

If you have one, what are your future plans with it?

On that note, what will happen to the cars next do you think? Will the company go bust?

Fascinating people are losing their shit over Tesla but no word about Volkswagen, literally founded by the Nazi party. It’s all virtue signaling nonsense.

MrsFinkelstein · 14/03/2025 10:33

Don't have a Tesla, and never plan to buy one.

I've always thought they looked a bit like kit cars, so that alone put me off.

My neighbour has had one for a few years - it's been in the garage at least once every year to repair something major since he bought it.

And it's currently back in as it spontaneously went on fire. They'd only just got it back the week before after having something else replaced.

Their experience alone definitely put me off.

I might consider an EV in the future but it wouldn't be a Tesla - I'd go for something more reliable (& better looking IMO).

Quick question. What happened to the Nazi Party? And when? And what's happened in Germany since then? And to VW? What political party is VW currently publicly aligned with?

loadalaundry · 14/03/2025 10:37

It's not the same thing plus no one is saying "don't buy Tesla buy VW instead".

Question285 · 14/03/2025 10:38

DH wanted one for years and I said no partly because I didn’t like Elon Musk. And that was before he started with the political stuff. We’re definitely not getting one now. I also left twitter the day he took over. I just didn’t like the guy, for some reason he made my skin crawl.

If I had a Tesla I wouldn’t sell it just because of Elon Musk’s behaviour, but I’d definitely not buy another.

Regarding your final paragraph, I think it's because people are watching the current descent of the US towards fascism with open mouths. Trump and Musk are some of the main (if not THE main) perpetrators of this (excepting Putin, of course). The actions Trump is taking run parallel in many ways with what happens in any fascist takeover. I truly worry for the democracy of the country, Trump posted an anti gay Nazi symbol the other day, each day it's some other hideous thing that promotes fascist ideology and chips away at civil liberties.

Trump posted a link to an article in the Washington post that had the pink triangle with a line through it in the title header which talked about the new tone in army adverts since Trump took over, and so although it is correct to say that he posted the image, it was an image from the Washington Post, which is not a extreme Right wing publication.
Although Trump has many faults and policies that I disagree with, he has made no attack on LGB people, but has tried to reverse the worst of Trans inclusive policies where they have been detrimental to women's rights.

loadalaundry · 14/03/2025 10:38

I mean should Germany be boycotted forever? Kicked out of Europe?

The point is irrelevant. What VW did 90 years ago is not affecting their corporate decisions, or the wider world now.

i do know older people have never bought a German or Japanese car for that exact reason, but that’s not what we’re talking about.

We’re talking about what power our choices have now, and how we want to use them.

This ‘whataboutery’ is futile and disingenuous.

loadalaundry · 14/03/2025 10:40

This ‘whataboutery’ is futile and disingenuous.

It's fascinating how people think it's a legitimate argument. Do people really think if the VW CEO went on right wing Twitter rants that he would still be in his job?

loadalaundry · 14/03/2025 10:41

Tesla shareholder should oust him but presumably he's the majority shareholder. They will be losing ££££

I have always thought he was a fucking idiot but that played no part in my car buying decision.

Please stop virtue signalling

pursuitOfSomething · 14/03/2025 10:55

I'm surpised people are getting rid of Tesla cars they already own but not surpised people aren't buying more.

Partly due to Elon Musk poltical antics - but also I don't drive - the cyber truck isn't being sold in UK but my newsfeeds full of what an expensive peice of shit it is - and I also know better alternatives I'm never going to need.

I know it's a completely different product but if that's what they are willing to put their name to - well it's not confidence inspiring about rest of their products.

Ok noted about the triangle.

Whilst I take your point about the transgender stuff, I'm not sure it's entirely true to say he's made no attack on LGB people. Whilst a lot of the more recent records on this page refer to the transgender stuff, there are a considerable amount which also relate to or affect LGB people, both recent and historic:

Why - have you not read about Tesla safety issues recently?

Here's just one recent article, there are loads:

https://www.carscoops.com/2025/03/almost-1-in-4-tesla-model-3s-fails-government-safety-checks/

"MY2020 Model 3s became old enough to require an inspection by the Danish Road Traffic Authority in 2024, and of the 4,668 examples tested, 1,051 failed. That’s a 23 percent failure rate and compares badly with a 9 percent rate witnessed in rival EVs, the Federation of Danish Motorists (FDM) reports."

I believe that electric cars burst into flames less frequently than other fuels but they don't make the headlines.
The incident where a car at an airport in the carpark caught fire was reported to be involving an electric car, except it wasn't.
Either way I think this thread is about not buying Teslas/selling Teslas for political reasons rather than anything else.

I have no idea what the political leanings of the CEO of Volvo or Toyota are, I don't think it matters to most people, they just choose their car based on what they need/like don't they?

No you don't know, but Musk makes sure you do by supporting the AfD etc publically.

It is like buying a car from a company owned by Hitler. Would you do that?

loadalaundry · 14/03/2025 11:17

I drive a Volvo, if the CEO was outed as a Nazi sympathiser or pedo or insert other heinous activity & the company kept them on I wouldn't buy another one. But the vast majority of companies would sack someone who brings their brand into disrepute and many companies have pushed out their founders because they were harming the brand eg Uber, Tinder, Deciem.

ZebedeeDougalFlorence · 14/03/2025 11:27

Hoppinggreen · 14/03/2025 09:33

I didn't buy my Tesla bescause of the environment.
I buy things based on what works best for us, if there was something that was absolutely 100% proven to be based on slave labour then probably not but we don't really know do we? Apple? Shein?
When I bought my car who owned the company didn't even come into it and for so many people harping on about Tesla owners is an easy way to feel better about their own choices.

Edited

The way you make your choice doesn't make you better than anybody else.

Boycotting Tesla is sending an effective message to Musk from across the globe. Sales have gone down drastically. We are powerless to make him understand or hear our objections to his actions because he doesn't give a fuck about or listen to the little people. This is one way in which we (well, not me because I can't afford a Tesla) can make our voices heard. It doesn't matter that anyone thinks it's pathetic, right now it is one of the only things we have in our power. We helped to build his vast wealth. We can help to put a dent in it.

loadalaundry · 14/03/2025 11:28
