what one-off extravagant purchases do you have ? *not a gloating thread*

A friend of a friend lives in Greece and has recently brought themselves an underwater sea scooter. A top of the range one. They are not well off by any means, but could afford to treat themselves to this. It looks a real smart piece of kit.

It got me thinking, we don't have any one-off extravagant purchases. Not that you have to have any, of course. There has just never been anything we have really wanted, with the exception of a new car. But this thread is not about buying to that level.

*edited to add this is a no judgement thread

Horse 😂

Exactly what I was going to post! Yup, a horse (bloody nice one though, she's my world).

101Nutella · 05/03/2025 19:28

Air conditioning unit.
my partner thought it was extravagant but I thought it will only become more and more needed with weather fluctuations.

best thing I’ve ever done. Being able to get a good nights sleep in horrible sticky weather, and not worry about the children over heating too.

deathbypiles · 05/03/2025 19:29

A ninja slushie.
It will pay for itself in the summer when we have 2 roasting hot days, I'll be oh so gloating.

3,840.00 Jane Austen Mont blanc pen last September, I was on a waiting list for it.
I love pens and I saved for this one, beautiful 😍

OMG. Don't lose it! I've just seen they have one for £157k! That is nuts. Who would buy that?

My new mare, that I bought just over a year ago, but we are a horsey family, so while DH would love this to be a one off extravagance, it won't be. I once went to Your Horse Live with the kids and made the mistake of going around the rescue village with them. When we got home, DH asked if we had bought anything nice? "You might want to sit down for this," I said.

I love this! I am the same..

Flippercanorious · 05/03/2025 19:31

Steinway. Its beautiful and so lovely to play.

That's the dream

what a dream! we just have an average double and that nearly touches the walls each side so to have something like that we would have to knock out the walls have it open to the estate have it hanging over the edge!

How fabulous! 🥰

I don't have any expensive/one off things that I can think of, but loving this thread! If I had money to treat myself I'd go for antique jewellery every time, especially rings. Absolute magpie here!

Actually, antique anything, thinking about it...

Timeforatincture · 05/03/2025 19:34

Art

Business class to New Zealand

A perfectly ridiculous light in the shape of a palm tree, from a local antique shop. DH and I deemed it our Christmas present to each other that year. It's fab!

My lovely new horse, and then i decided he needed a nice new trailer to travel in so i bought a new horse trailer as well 🐎🐎🤩

This post made my day! I don't own horses now, but my mother and I had several when I was growing up, and this sounds like the sort of thing we would have done. Smile

EdithStourton · 05/03/2025 19:37

Some jewellery.
DH said, 'Choose the stones you really like', so I did.

He won't be saying that again in a hurry.

How much do horses cost?

They are a bit like cars.. You could pick up one for a couple of hundred quid or spend thousands. I have had many horses in my life, mostly given, rescued, bought for a £1 due to being abandoned. My current horse though I paid £12k for, she is very well bred, very respected breeder and it shows. Riding her is like sitting on a memory foam mattress and she is very special. However, equally the £1 horse was with me for 14 years and I loved her to bits. So in answer to your question it varies!

I think the money I have spent on rugs, tack, horsebox, saddles far outweighs the cost of the horse.. (worth it though!)

This for me too. Perhaps not as exciting as other people’s purchases but this machine brings me so much joy - I genuinely go to bed looking forward to my morning coffee 😂

Me too!!!! Love my Sage coffee machine.

Daisy12Maisie · 05/03/2025 19:48

I went on my dream holiday for my 40th. Could I really afford it - no. Is it the best thing I've ever done - yes. Now my eldest doesn't want to come on family holidays as he is busy with other things so it wasn't absolute best time to do it. Loads of amazing memories.

Children... literally IVF is extortionately priced when everyone else seems to get there kid for free after a few minutes of fun. I couldn't imagine life without my kids though.

Totally agree took me 11 years to have my son

I've got a Rolex on order . God knows if it'll ever come through , I've been waiting 8 mths already .

DH was offered one after 2+ years waiting, and we thought that was quick based on what we'd heard! He'd since changed his mind though and went with a very nice Tag instead. Just as well as the one offered was a very expensive model we definitely couldn't afford 😅

Hopefully you don't have to wait too long!

Thindog · 05/03/2025 19:50

A pony. Not sure it's a one off purchase, it's a constant source of expense! (But worth it!)

FondantFancyFan · 05/03/2025 19:54

The horse owners haven't paid their horse tax in pictures.......you can't post on this thread without posting the requisite photos.

JustmeandtheChickens · 05/03/2025 19:54

I've always loved this quote about owning horses:

How do you make a small fortune ... start with a large one and buy a horse!! 😂

828Pax · 05/03/2025 19:58

I feel like I now need an emperor sized bed, a pool table/dining table and lots of beautiful books from the Folio Society

changedusernameforthis1 · 05/03/2025 19:59

We have a few things that others have classed as extravagant, but we've either saved up for them or bought them on finance.

Sky glass TV, alexa, ring doorbell, some branded clothes/footwear. I got myself the Samsung galaxy fold and even though it's a nice phone, I wouldn't have another as I just don't use it in the tablet mode.

Oh! We have a hotel chocolat velvitiser - absolutely love it, but it was in a sale at the time.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 05/03/2025 20:00

My major one-off purchase was a natural reaction to being told regularly as a child, "You are not having a piano until you get your own house, because they are big, ugly pieces of furniture!" Naturally, the first thing I bought when I moved out was a Steinway piano. It was more expensive than my car, and takes up a large chunk of space in my small-ish house, but it is beautiful and I am never getting rid of it!

My other major one-off purchase was my greenhouse frame. I say 'frame' because the recent winter storms took great joy in blowing out (and smashing) the large glass panels, so they're an on-going expense!

TheeNotoriousPIG · 05/03/2025 20:01

I would love to have solar panels, an American fridge-freezer and a detached house with no nearby neighbours (or barking dogs) next 😁
