what one-off extravagant purchases do you have ? *not a gloating thread*

A friend of a friend lives in Greece and has recently brought themselves an underwater sea scooter. A top of the range one. They are not well off by any means, but could afford to treat themselves to this. It looks a real smart piece of kit.

It got me thinking, we don't have any one-off extravagant purchases. Not that you have to have any, of course. There has just never been anything we have really wanted, with the exception of a new car. But this thread is not about buying to that level.

*edited to add this is a no judgement thread

Shelves for an alcove in my sitting room. They are solid ash and look very rustic . They were about £100 per shelf and we have 4 in each alcove . I love them. I’ve never spent so much on shelves ever .

Proper hydrotherapy hot tub for my 40th. Love it. Use it 2 to 3 times a week.

Ineedanewsofa · 05/03/2025 16:20

Pool table that’s also a dining table. Gets used as a pool table most days and a dining table when we need to seat more than 6. It’s a beautiful piece of furniture which hopefully we’ll have forever.

Outing, but hey ho. And emperor sized bed. 7ft wide. I freakin love it.

Sounds amazing! Is it difficult getting bedding for it?

Is it easy to source bedding? Is it expensive bedding?

We treated ourselves during lockdown down to. Technics 1210 turntable

In fairness our lady ones were bought in 1984 and 1985

Can you get lady turntables?!

Amermaidlikenemo · 05/03/2025 16:22

I’ve name changed for this.

An 18m x 9m swimming pool for the garden when we built our house. If also has a children’s pool attached. My family are all serious swimmers and it’s just big enough for them to get a good length in when exercising. It also has a heat exchanger that cools the water when it’s hot and warms it up when it’s cold. It’s a once in a lifetime purchase because I’ll be dead by the time it needs replaced and I doubt the children will want to do it given the cost and the upkeep.

My new mare, that I bought just over a year ago, but we are a horsey family, so while DH would love this to be a one off extravagance, it won't be. I once went to Your Horse Live with the kids and made the mistake of going around the rescue village with them. When we got home, DH asked if we had bought anything nice? "You might want to sit down for this," I said.

My DH would love this! Where did you get it from?

SuffolkUnicorn · 05/03/2025 16:25

Definitely emperor bed is going on my list 😂😂

my gastric sleeve cost me 11k in London that was worth every penny

I, too, bought an electric piano- a really nice one with weighted keys.

We had a piano in every house I lived in, growing up, so to me it kind of means 'proper grown up person' (along with a drinks cabinet, but I think those are rather dated now). I don't have room for a proper piano, so bought the electric one.

When I built my extension I envisaged my piano, sitting there all shiny, while I sat down every day for an hour to practice. It lasted two months, then the spcae became 'needed' for other things.

It's now back in the loft. One day though...

I like this thread. It's nice to see what makes people happy!

Private school x 2 (but cheaper than moving - and not something I’m personally benefiting from!)
Once upon a time we had Freddie’s Flowers which felt like a treat but then private school fees hit and the quality of the flowers went down a bit at the same time.
An under-used secondhand Peloton…

@krustykittens this is the company https://luxury-pool-tables.co.uk/
Cannot speak highly enough of them, it was DHs 40th birthday present and they went above and beyond to help me. Guy that fitted it was also brilliant.

Pendants. They started as a way of appeasing my DH when he wanted to buy me a special gift & I didn't need anything but the reasons have increased to include "sorry I f*ed up" gifts.
I don't feel irresponsible because they've increased in value & will be left to my DDs.

Mouikey · 05/03/2025 16:34

A Gibson guitar from the Memphis factory. It was both unexpected and extravagant and has increased in value.

also a dog! Initially as expensive as the guitar (lockdown) but has not held her monetary value 😂😂😂. She is utterly loved though and has cost a fortune in vets bills.

Delphiniumandlupins · 05/03/2025 16:34

A dog. Got made redundant and decided to buy a pure bred puppy rather than removing (as all previous dogs). Best decision ever, never regretted.

GreenSedan · 05/03/2025 16:34

I have a beautiful tent. It cost £1000 and was worth every penny.

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 05/03/2025 16:35

Bass guitar. Bought it for myself as a reward for finishing my PGCE with a distinction.

Other than that, I tend to spend on holidays and experiences instead when finances allow.

Ohshutupdavidyoutwat · 05/03/2025 16:35

The most I have ever spent on something for myself was having my front 4 teeth veneered, no not in Turkey. They cost me around 3k 8 years ago and changed my smile and my whole face really - worth every single penny of the overtime I had to do to pay for them.

Paddleboardsandironingboards · 05/03/2025 16:36

We've got a Nordic spa (those wooden spa tubs where the water is heated by a fire). It's never been used and just sits there shaming me every time I walk past. This thread has prompted me to put it up for sale.

Mulberry handbag. I promised myself one for a promotion that took 5 years work. Ended up buying a house the month before and not reallllly having the money but DH told me I worked for it and to have it anyway.

Still using it every day 3 years in.

Same here.saved for a year to buy it. Had it for 5 years now and use it every day.
