what one-off extravagant purchases do you have ? *not a gloating thread*

A friend of a friend lives in Greece and has recently brought themselves an underwater sea scooter. A top of the range one. They are not well off by any means, but could afford to treat themselves to this. It looks a real smart piece of kit.

It got me thinking, we don't have any one-off extravagant purchases. Not that you have to have any, of course. There has just never been anything we have really wanted, with the exception of a new car. But this thread is not about buying to that level.

*edited to add this is a no judgement thread

White miniature schnauzer puppy. She cost a ridiculous amount of money and drives me nuts. Currently fast asleep on my lap and I love her to bits.
Worth every penny!

I didn't think I had anything but yes, our little mini schnauzer! He was 1,600 and that is an outrageous spend for us. But worth every cent, he is perfect with our SN children. And a no shedding dog is a revelation!

My piano. Well I say mine, we went shopping for a piano when my son had spent a year learning and seemed (and is still) keen. We'd budgeted 3k for a second hand one but I tried playing a new one in the shop and fell in love with its beautiful warm tone even if it was 2k more. It gives me huge pleasure and I'm working towards my grade 6 having been purely self-taught until we bought this. It's such a delight to play, my piano teacher loves coming round to give me a lesson on it!

My F-type Jaguar. It’s a beast and I love it. The pleasure I get is worth the 💷💷💷💷💷💷💷💷.

MagpieCastle · 05/03/2025 20:09

We combined our Christmas presents to buy each other a painting and limited edition prints we both really wanted. After 5 years they still bring joy every day. It seemed extravagant at the time but they’ve definitely held value when compared to our accident prone cat’s vet bills over the same period (though admittedly even the loveliest art isn’t nearly as warm, funny and cuddly as she is).

Children... literally IVF is extortionately priced when everyone else seems to get there kid for free after a few minutes of fun. I couldn't imagine life without my kids though.

lol, same, IVF - I literally brought my kids 😂

Greenhouse. Proper, toughened glass & aluminium greenhouse on a specially laid, paving slab base.

Oh the Mum-guilt 🫣

Botox - to keep the frown lines away!

Is it good? I’m tempted but scared of looking all shiny.

A baby grand piano. We have always had a piano. Dh teaches music, I did a music degree & da is now at conservatoire but the baby grand was an extravagant impulse purchase. It’s been in constant use though.

An abstract painting. It’s beautiful.

A Max Mara wool coat

My Mulberry handbag was half price so not too extravagant but last year dh bought me a Bottega handbag.

He recently bought a pair of Louis Vuitton shoes. Very out of character for him.

reelcat · 05/03/2025 20:22

A £3000 watch. I have just worked out that since I bought it to now it would have been the same as paying 50p a day!

Electric piano, which we bought during lockdown. One off splurge and only seemingly played fucking once by the child who begged for it...

I refuse to get rid of it, sadly convincing myself that one day I'll learn to play it myself!

Arf! I bought an electric piano about 8 years ago and had lessons. I was getting on quite well and really enjoying it until (after about a year) I foolishly mowed the lawn and gave myself tennis-elbow which hung around for months. I somehow never got back into the swing. The piano's still here, though.

Nellieinthebarn · 05/03/2025 20:23

At the age of 48, I fulfilled a lifetime ambition and I bought myself a pony. Not only hugely expensive and extravagant, but with large ongoing financial, time and emotional commitments.

I do not regret it for a moment, and now he is gone to horse heaven, I miss the old bugger every day.

Barney16 · 05/03/2025 20:24

A £650 wool coat. I could afford it but even so it was a lot of money. I absolutely love it. I wear it every day in colder weather and it just makes me happy.

That’s the thing. My £200 citizen watch stopped working after 10 years & it cost more to repair than it would to buy another. My dads Omega watch has lasted a lifetime.

Sorrynotsorry2 · 05/03/2025 20:28

My sofa. Cost 5k but don't regret it . Best buy .

Ineedanewsofa · 05/03/2025 20:28

Lilofthevalley · 05/03/2025 17:01

Which one did you get?

A version of the contemporary in oak although they didn’t do the Farmhouse when we bought ours as I might have gone for that!

Patterncarmen · 05/03/2025 20:30

Full length sheepskin coat £1400, on sale for £1100. I had my eye on it for 6-7 years.
very nice wool mattress £1200. My back is thanking me already.

I like this thread. It's nice to see what makes people happy!

Me too!!

MayaPinion · 05/03/2025 20:34

Splurged on a brand new Tesla last year, before Elon came out as a Trump hugging Nazi. Regret it because of that but it really is a fantastic and beautiful car. I just feel a bit dirty now.

caffelatte100 · 05/03/2025 20:37

Some nice purchases that make me happy every single day:

Jura coffee machine
Ragdolls
Sono speakers in almost every room in our house

Dymaxion · 05/03/2025 20:40

A horse, to be fair he was cheap to buy at £500, but he fulfilled a childhood dream for me at the age of 37 and was an absolutely brilliant horse in every way, so was quite happy for him to be a paddock ornament in his dotage.

Shannith · 05/03/2025 20:41

Am armchair (it's fancy and about 10 or maybe even 20x more than most people who pay for one). I was pregnant and had had no fun months.

I would say horses by they were free.

Mulberry bag (s)

This is before I discovered and became very good at charity shop hunting. Now I have many extravagant things tnat someone else paid for originally.

Oh actualy the dried flower and feathers stags head I just brought. That's a proper extravagant treat and arrives no purpose but the make me happy.
