what one-off extravagant purchases do you have ? *not a gloating thread*

A friend of a friend lives in Greece and has recently brought themselves an underwater sea scooter. A top of the range one. They are not well off by any means, but could afford to treat themselves to this. It looks a real smart piece of kit.

It got me thinking, we don't have any one-off extravagant purchases. Not that you have to have any, of course. There has just never been anything we have really wanted, with the exception of a new car. But this thread is not about buying to that level.

*edited to add this is a no judgement thread

How much do horses cost?

Relatively little unless you want a fancy one. The upkeep is the expense.

Notodrugs · 05/03/2025 18:45

We just put a home gym in our garage - all really nice commercial grade equipment (no machines though). Spent about £5k on it and it feels like such a luxury! We are really into fitness and lifting though so it wasn't on a whim

Outing, but hey ho. And emperor sized bed. 7ft wide. I freakin love it.

Sounds great! Where did you buy it from? I want one. Particularly as I have not bought anything exciting or expensive to add to the thread.

Holiday for my parents and they deserve it.❤

Air con in our bedroom and we’re so grateful every summer (south facing room in the south east).

I've got a Rolex on order . God knows if it'll ever come through , I've been waiting 8 mths already .

I hope you don’t have to wait as long as me. 3 years next week, ordered in WoS. I’ve chased up a few times but because it’s not a solid gold one, they’re not interested. Put your name down with ALL of the authorised dealers, that’s where I think I went wrong. I kind of can’t be bothered now. Good luck and I hope you get the call soon.

For my 65th birthday I bought a piece of art. It's a lovely painting and my art tutor and friend painted it. She's a bona fide artist whose work is in demand. It cost more than I would normally spend on myself but it's lush!

Not as extravagant as some in here but a few months ago I spent £230 on a kitchen bin and I still absolutely love it. DH is still in disbelief I spent so much on a bin.

We also got a large American style fridge freezer for around £750 in the Black Friday sales and every time I open it I marvel at how much space we have in there.

Most extravagant purchase ever (if my wedding doesn't count) would have been after winning some money and I spent over £2k of it on a holiday to Juneau, Alaska. I'd not long split from my DC's dad and my mum looked after DC and my dog while I travelled all the way there by myself. I stayed with an online friend and her husband who showed me around the place and it was honestly the best holiday ever.

I spent £1,100 on handmade curtains for my one-bedroom flat, which was my single biggest purchase on moving in.

But they’re beautiful & from a small local business, & I still smile whenever I look at them.

An Everhot range cooker (electric version of Aga, but much better). Eyewatering amount of money for a cooker, but I absolutely love it and it keeps our previously cold gloomy kitchen delightfully warm and toasty, thus reducing the amount we have to spend on heating oil (no mains gas here).

We ummed and ahhed about it for over a year, but have never regretted it - it looks amazing, keeps us toasty and warm, and is fabulous for cooking (you don't have to blind bake pastry, complete game-changer).

We bought an original painting at an art fair about 30 years ago. We loved it, but it was out of our price range but at the end of the day it was reduced. It is stunning and people comment on it all the time. Now we are in our 60s there is a running jokey argument among our family members about who will inherit it!!

3,840.00 Jane Austen Mont blanc pen last September, I was on a waiting list for it.
I love pens and I saved for this one, beautiful 😍

A Mulberry handbag. I treasure it!

Another one here who bought a hot tub in lockdown and hardly ever uses it

Hospitality tickets to this years French Open tennis

My Chanel and Prada sunglasses

DH and I spent £20k on a sterling silver, Asprey & Garrard cutlery set. In my defence, they were a client of mine and we got a good discount. Nonetheless, £20k on knives and forks…..bloody stupid that was. They are lovely though and we were young, pre-kids and evidently had money to burn.

WisePearlPoet · 05/03/2025 19:15

After years of wanting them I spent nearly £600 on a Smeg kettle, toaster and milk fother, all in pale blue. I've only had them three years and they've all gone kaput.

I won't be buying them again but at least I had them for a while.

I also spend a ridiculous amount of money on antique quilts

IslandsAround · 05/03/2025 19:17

I have been ticking off my list on here while reading:

Coffee machine - Rancillo and love it
Multiple trips to Maldives
First class long haul flights
Large electric cargo bike for ferrying the kids around town
50% house renovation
Large people carrier bought outright - don’t even need to fold the buggy down
Repairable Dualit toaster
Bespoke woodshed

Things I don’t love

Other half’s running machine - barely used takes up too much room

How is that outing? Loads of people have big beds.

Books from the Folio Society. I bought 12 books / sets in the last year, so have spent around £1000 on pretty books.

I bought my Husband a copy of A Christmas Carol from The Folio Society as a Christmas gift. It's really beautiful and he loves it.

Wishboneswishes · 05/03/2025 19:21

A boat. We live by the sea and use it all summer. Costs a lot for marina storage, £2.5k ish a year but worth it for us. We love it.

NetZeroZealot · 05/03/2025 19:22

I thought our bean to cup coffee machine was a ridiculous extravagance when DH bought it for me after I was made redundant. But I wouldn’t be without it now!

AprilF00L · 05/03/2025 19:24

A 4WD Mercedes campervan. Love it and the freedom it gives us. Off grid a lot of the time.

Dagnabit · 05/03/2025 19:24

For the family, a holiday to America a few years ago and another holiday to America this year - lots of ££ but worth it for a great experience. For me, weight loss meds - I know it’s very much frowned upon here but for me, the 3 stone loss has been worth it.

Peakcentral · 05/03/2025 19:25

Surprised no one has mentioned this, but my breast reduction (entirely cosmetic) was the best €10k I’ve ever spent!
