what one-off extravagant purchases do you have ? *not a gloating thread*

A friend of a friend lives in Greece and has recently brought themselves an underwater sea scooter. A top of the range one. They are not well off by any means, but could afford to treat themselves to this. It looks a real smart piece of kit.

It got me thinking, we don't have any one-off extravagant purchases. Not that you have to have any, of course. There has just never been anything we have really wanted, with the exception of a new car. But this thread is not about buying to that level.

*edited to add this is a no judgement thread

I bought a cameo from my celebrity crush just to tell them I had a crush on them growing up

I bought an instant pot in the sale on Amazon. Couldn't afford one for all these years, but the sale fell at a time when I had enough to buy one at last. Used it a few times already. Happy me. 😊

@Sgtmajormummy No not with mine. Stuff slides off the shelves in the freezer because bags of frozen chips/frozen veg etc are uneven. That's why newer style American fridge freezers and regular uk freezers have drawers I suppose!

My mother’s complaint. The American style freezer has neat stacks of boxes / containers (she batch cooks a lot and my Dad stews fruit from the garden and stores it similar containers).

The bags of chips / joints of meat at Christmas and anything else that needs to be piled up go in the garage in the chest freezer.

I’m not one for extravagant purchases. My refurbished Apple Watch felt like extravagance to me. I also now own a pair of road running shoes and a pair of trail running shoes and a pair of gym shoes. This also feels fairly extravagant 😂.

im more of a doer and will happily spend money on theatre tickets, weekends away, holidays and experiences.

Sgtmajormummy · 08/03/2025 21:48

Two drawers and 4 shelves in my American freezer so I’ll take your advice and put irregular bags of veg etc. in the drawers. I’m currently in the first flush of delight and can’t see anything wrong with my purchase!

The installers set it up completely flat (with my spirit level) but on close reading the instructions advise a +1cm height difference at the front. We’ve got the tool for that if sliding is a problem.

Going against the grain but we love our hot tub. It gets used at least three times a week.

I don't understand the appeal of hot tubs. I wouldn't want to wallow in a hot incubator of bacteria, dead skin cells and fecal matter but you do you, I guess.

Just out of interest, is that how you talk to people in real life? Do you use the Internet as a way of being able to be ruder or is that how you speak? I'm not being obtuse I'm genuinely interested.

I love my American fridge freezer! I'm on my second, the last one broke down after about 15 years. Btw, if any of you need a broken one taking away, AO do it cheaply. The council will not take them. I suppose I splurged on those, I have a second (normal) fridge freezer. It's just a thing of mine, I have to have enough food to be able to feed a fair sized army..
I did have a gorgeous horse when younger - he was £140, so you can tell how long ago that was!
I think other than that, a four seater sofa, a three seat, & an armchair, all matching leather from Barker & Stonehouse. About £2,000 years ago & still going strong.

Went to NYC with three best friends last autumn, it all feels like a dream now, and we flew premium.
had and absolute blast

One more thing, after taking up the piano again decades after not touching one for so long, I was give a very old upright piano, with a beautiful wooden cabinet, but the tone was very poor and the tuner told me it’d cost a bomb to fix it, and he didn’t think it’d survive another proper tuning.

So I had the ‘guts’ taken out and replaced with a digital system. From the outside you can’t possibly tell the difference. The tone is in fact much better, and the pedals no longer squeak.

bitterbuddhist · 09/03/2025 12:36

Pilot capless fountain pen. £150 when I bought it. It doesn't hold much in and runs out after two lines (I wonder if I'm doing it wrong)😑. But it's a wonder and I wouldn't sell on.

A handbag that I paid £150 for about 20 years ago, and someone I know bought one like it in a charity shop for £5 (can't remember the brand of the bag).

They actually replied. I was so happy to tell them though.

£359 on a kitchen aid stand mixer in the sale. I was eyeing one up for a few years but couldn’t bring myself to justify the spend. But in the end I decided to get it for myself last summer and so pleased I did! I (and my friends and family) are really enjoying all the output!

I've been eyeing up the Kitchenaid Artisan Evergreen....so beautiful my heart hurts lol. I can afford it I just can't justify it as my current stand mixer still has lots of life. I showed it to DP a couple of times hoping he'd agree I should get it...he didn't 🫤. Maybe next year when I can pretend I've saved for it 😅.

Needspaceforlego · 09/03/2025 21:45

There is something very attractive about the Kitchenaids. I certainly don't use my existing mixer enough to justify an upgrade either. Will need to wait until it breaks.

I was kneading, whisking and beating everything by hand before getting the kitchen aid and I’m so glad I did get it. I now bake more because it is so quick compared with hand mixing 🤭 I did get big popeye biceps from hand mixing though 🤣🤣 but now I might even bake two things in the same day like a bread and something sweet which I never would have done before as my arm was so tired after mixing/kneading just one thing! Yes it’s extravagant but I’m glad I did save up for it after all 🙂

I will pray an anvil falls on it to speed things up for you 😉

Haha... I bake a fair bit but now I'm wondering if I should help my old one along a bit 🤭.

Holiday home in France. I love going but DS teen just wants to stay home in the summer because he doesn't want to miss playing for his cricket team. We're going in May Gor a week but I've almost had to beg him. He used to love it when he was younger. It makes me a bit sad it's not used more as in a nice location 15 minutes from the beach and 2 km from the market town. With a lovely port you can walk around.

I've just spent £1159 p.p. on a holiday, this is loads for me and I'm trying not to get buyer's remorse 😅

No regrets! Look forward to it and then enjoy every second of it ⭐

I am so envious of you.

But when DS is a little older I am sure he will return to loving it. My parents were big travellers and when I was a teen I used to resent being made to leave my horse riding lessons over the summer while we travelled to Singapore, Hong Kong, China. Fiji etc. Now looking back I realise what an amazing opportunity it all was and some of my most teasured memories are based on that (and has also meant I started travelling with my own children from a very early age).

Spent $324 on the ILNP website back in 2023. Don't know what that was in £s. It's free international shipping over $300 dollars but I had a code for 10% off, which took me below the threshold, so it was cheaper to buy another nail polish collection than pay for the shipping!

More recently I spent £132 including shipping on the Orly international website. They're based in California and have only recently started shipping things to the UK. I bought a Kelli Marissa Halloween advent calendar and two Kelli Marissa nail polish trios that I have wanted for ages but which aren't available in the UK (the Orly UK website is a regular haunt of mine. 😁)
