what one-off extravagant purchases do you have ? *not a gloating thread*

A friend of a friend lives in Greece and has recently brought themselves an underwater sea scooter. A top of the range one. They are not well off by any means, but could afford to treat themselves to this. It looks a real smart piece of kit.

It got me thinking, we don't have any one-off extravagant purchases. Not that you have to have any, of course. There has just never been anything we have really wanted, with the exception of a new car. But this thread is not about buying to that level.

*edited to add this is a no judgement thread

A complete sauna.

We've got a Nordic spa (those wooden spa tubs where the water is heated by a fire). It's never been used and just sits there shaming me every time I walk past. This thread has prompted me to put it up for sale.

Edited

I’ve been looking at these! Any reason you don’t use it?

Itsarecipefordisaster · 06/03/2025 19:10

I’ve not done it yet but I can feel it coming… I’m getting married in 2 years. I decided I’d get a 2nd hand wedding dress for about £500. Wasn’t really fussed about anything expensive. Then I discovered Jenny Packham. I can’t find anything I like second hand which means I’ll spend £2-3K or maybe more on a new one! It’s just such a lot of money for something I’ll wear once

ThePoliteLion · 06/03/2025 19:11

A classic Max Mara Weekend camel coat

changeme4this · 06/03/2025 19:12

About 25 years ago we bought two leather recliners from a very good furniture manufacturing name. In total the cost was about the same price as a nearly new small hatch back car.

we didn’t tell anyone how much they were but a family member, who was in the market for a small near new car, guessed and was gobsmacked.

we still use them to this day on a daily main chair basis and I think she has gone through several changes of lounge since then.

apart from our bed suite and mattresses everything else we have we brought into the relationship from earlier lives.

Arraminta · 06/03/2025 19:16

Can I also mention I paid a local joiner to make me a bespoke, adjustable jigsaw table to my very exacting specifications. Absolutely love it x

LostMyLanyard · 06/03/2025 19:23

A beautiful original (trademarked with serial number) Tiffany lamp.

It's my favourite thing in my home 💖

Elly46 · 06/03/2025 19:29

About 15 years ago. A second hand Cartier watch with diamond face and white gold bracelet. I swapped my ford fiesta for it as I had a company car to drive. It lifts every outfit and is the only jewellery I wear along with my wedding rings.

Dodgybarber · 06/03/2025 19:47

Seemed extravagant at the time, a stencil piece of art for £150 as a present for DH. Both liked the artist who wasn't well known at the time. I didn't earn much and had never spent that much on a present before for him. Currently insured for up to £60k.

A ShihTzu puppy. Before anyone says I should have gone to a rescue centre, I tried but only large dogs were available. She's hard work but adorable. Bottom of the class at puppy training classes and has ruined the living room carpetbut no regrets.

Our Shih Tzu is 13 now and he's still a stubborn wee thing. He's also one of the most loving little dogs. I was away overnight a couple of weeks ago and when I got home he ran and jumped on me like he was still a puppy. He doesn't usually act like that though, he now barks to demand to be lifted up onto beds or chairs for cuddles as he isn't as nimble as he used to be and he knows we will always give him cuddles when he wants them. Smile

I want one of these. Struggling to justify when the current barbecue is fully functional still.

My husband still uses the bbq. Only because I won’t let him near my Egg 😂

@Thisbastardcomputer Just said goodbye to our only salt & pepper mini schnauzer boy in November. Am broken without him. He was almost 14

Noperope · 06/03/2025 19:56

Fancy yoga mat. On klarna, but still cost a fortune. I'm eyeing a X-pole next. They take Clearpay! 🤣🤣

AnxiouslyAwaitingSpring · 06/03/2025 19:56

@Winterscoming77 What does being a single mother have to do with extravagant purchases!?

Danielle9891 · 06/03/2025 19:56

I bought myself a £1,000 Fluval shaker fish tank. I love my tropical fish and it really helps with my post depression. I feel really guilty but I do love it. I don't even spend money on myself getting my hair done so this was very expensive for me.

AnxiouslyAwaitingSpring · 06/03/2025 19:59

@NetZeroZealot Agreed!

scalt · 06/03/2025 20:00

@changedusernameforthis1 I too have a Hotel Chocolat velvetiser. It was a Christmas present, but the chocolate to put it is quite expensive as well. I know that you can grate your own choc, but that's too much effort (as is cleaning the thing after use).

Stinksmum · 06/03/2025 20:04

A Tom Ford handbag. In the Christmas sale for £600 but it was originally £2000.

My major one-off purchase was a natural reaction to being told regularly as a child, "You are not having a piano until you get your own house, because they are big, ugly pieces of furniture!" Naturally, the first thing I bought when I moved out was a Steinway piano. It was more expensive than my car, and takes up a large chunk of space in my small-ish house, but it is beautiful and I am never getting rid of it!

My other major one-off purchase was my greenhouse frame. I say 'frame' because the recent winter storms took great joy in blowing out (and smashing) the large glass panels, so they're an on-going expense!

Get toughened glass next time! I've a greenhouse on order and it's coming with toughened glass, bar capping (apparently helps prevent storm damage somehow?!?) and automatic opening vents that are surprisingly cheap as they're just wax which expands in the heat, subsequently opening the vents! 🤩

Pool table that’s also a dining table. Gets used as a pool table most days and a dining table when we need to seat more than 6. It’s a beautiful piece of furniture which hopefully we’ll have forever.

Ooooohhhh...where did you get that. We would love one but it has got to look nice, some are a bit dodgy....

AnxiouslyAwaitingSpring · 06/03/2025 20:09

TheeNotoriousPIG · 05/03/2025 20:01

I would love to have solar panels, an American fridge-freezer and a detached house with no nearby neighbours (or barking dogs) next 😁

American fridge freezers are not as great as you imagine. At least not the traditional ones. The fridge shelves are really far back from where you're stood and you have to bend down to get to half of your stuff and the freezer only has shelves! Sounds great but not in reality as when you're trying to stack tied up bags of veg/chips/half-empty boxes, it all comes crashing down when you open the freezer door again. That's if you can even get it closed!

Iloveanicegarden · 06/03/2025 20:10

Two long haul holiday.s and upgrading to real first class. Worth every penny to avoid cattle class and allowed us to move around.

Recently, a stairlift and about to buy a mobility scooter (no no long haul holidays)

MrsR87 · 06/03/2025 20:23

Pre children we managed to go on a couple of what I class as very nice holidays at around £4500 per person. That won’t be happening again, if ever.
Again, pre children we bought each other a Tag Heuer watch and we do use them most days even 5 years later. I think you do really look after things that you know are a one off!

My Le Creuset Dutch oven. It's a lot for a pot but I love it.

My 28cm le creuset with cast iron trivet cost me £30 35 years ago. I wish i had bought a stash of them. Too old now to use Le Crueset

Horse 😂

I raise you 3 of them 😂
my DH said it’s like throwing £20 notes into the wind ( and he doesn’t know most of the costs ! 😂 )
