what one-off extravagant purchases do you have ? *not a gloating thread*

A friend of a friend lives in Greece and has recently brought themselves an underwater sea scooter. A top of the range one. They are not well off by any means, but could afford to treat themselves to this. It looks a real smart piece of kit.

It got me thinking, we don't have any one-off extravagant purchases. Not that you have to have any, of course. There has just never been anything we have really wanted, with the exception of a new car. But this thread is not about buying to that level.

*edited to add this is a no judgement thread

When I left my city job I treated myself to a pair of Louboutins. I’d wanted them forever and knew I wouldn’t ever earn that much and have that level of disposable income again. I still love them, even if I don’t wear them very often I’m so so glad I bought them.

They are beautiful!

Can I ask if the red sole stays red? Oh, and if they are comfortable to wear?!

They are comfortable (but I didn’t go for the sky scraper high ones!), the sole marks very easily. I always used to wear them indoors only (so when staying at a hotel and dining in the restaurant or at family occasions etc) and I got talked into wearing them out in town once and the soles look quite battered as a result (despite not walking outside for more than 20 mins or so in them) they can apparently be re-soled but I don’t have the money to look into it.

@LilySLE it’s a dining table with removable leaves, underneath is a space you can use for board games (or jigsaw puzzles 🧩 etc). You can leave the game in situ if you need to take a break and use it for eating.

Other makes are available but we got ours from Geeknson geeknson.co.uk/bristol-table/

Thanks! Well I never. That’s a cool bit of kit

Probably doesn't fit the brief, but we bought an aesthetically pleasing fire, which is built into the chimney breast wall, about 10 years ago. We paid 2 grand for it, and the heat it emits is akin to giving an elephant a cashew. Unless you are sat directly in front of it, you feel nothing. What a waste of 2 grand.

Showercap22 · 06/03/2025 23:23

A 100k Ferrari.
We don't have it anymore, but it was fun for the year we did have it.

TaterTots68 · 06/03/2025 23:27

A campervan. We love it, we use it a lot but it cost more than we paid for our house 🙈

Horse 😂

Me too, we bought him 7 years ago before their prices went through the roof. It’s not the cost of buying them it’s everything in between 😂.
But I love him to bits, he’s now 12 and is in a home for life. I’m a happy hacker with low level dressage.
Yesterday I paid a £250 vet bill as his mud fever turned nasty

Woofie7 · 06/03/2025 23:48

Oo! I’m loving this!
a retriever puppy sadly passed away 2020 at the age of 11. Multiple vet hospital bills as she had some huge ops on her back .
Cartier watch on my retirement last year .
Engagement ring very expensive for us then but I love it.
handbag from Liberty
last month all new windows to front of house and a downstairs shower room I absolutely love.

@AnxiouslyAwaitingSpring l'm so sorry you lost your boy, my eldest girl, 12 hasn't been well at all this year, nothing serious found as yet but there's a new problem every week. She off again tomorrow for her weekly vet appointment, l fear it's the beginning of the end x

Oh no I'm sorry. Will be thinking of her 🙏💕🤞🏻

Heartbreaking for me to read that some people class animals as purchases, and that a vet bill is something extravagant - then go on to talk about Liberty and Cartier. My mind wouldn't even go to spending money on the animals I've loved, although I've always rescued and never purchased one.

I'm sure its a bit of a joke.
The same as my £6k IVF gamble 🎰

But it's also a recognision that animals are an expensive luxury.
Buying if you want any sort of pedigree, Stabling, dog walkers,
Food,
Insurance
Farriers / Groomers,
General kit, bedding, toys, tack etc

I considered a pony back in the days when I was single no kids and more disposable income. It would have been dearer than my mortgage at the time. The cheapest thing about it would have been buying it. And it would have sapped all my free time.

I’d rather go without expensive jewellery and household items as long as I can pay vet, farrier, livery and food bills for all my much loved animals. But in the grand scheme of things a horse is a luxury item and I’m forever grateful I have him, he’s with me for life.
i drive a crappy car and can’t remember I bought a new piece of clothing for myself. I may buy a nice dress for my daughters Royal Navy passing out parade coming up

WhenICalledYouLastNightFromTesco · 07/03/2025 00:18

@BobbySox71 sorry, I wasn't reacting to your comment. It was a comment that referred to the passing of their dog and then went on to talk about Cartier and Liberty, as if the dog had just been some commodity. The poster probably didn't even mean that either, and I'm probably just being a twat, but I hate that animals are seen as a commodity in our society by some.

KTMeetsTheRsUptown · 07/03/2025 00:34

My 3 dogs and a permanent canopy for the garden. Its saved me getting wet many times while out in the garden when the dogs need to pee 😊

Masmavi · 07/03/2025 00:40

Trip to an European country to see a singer whose music I'd loved for 35 years. İt wasn't the amazing trip I thought it'd be for various reasons but I definitely don't regret having taken it.

MerelyPlaying · 07/03/2025 00:56

Dental implant, and lens replacement surgery. A great thread, and it’s making me want a Sage coffee machine, but generally I don’t care about ‘things’ - any old handbag will do for me.

the implant was fantastic, restored my self-confidence. The lens replacement - life-changing.

Outing, but hey ho. And emperor sized bed. 7ft wide. I freakin love it.

We had a bed made for us similar to this one
(but it's only a 6 footer!)

Anyone else just want to go extravagant shopping reading this thread?!!

Also feel like we are going to see so many targeted ads on here for hot tubs, horses and emperor beds as clearly there’s a mumsnet frivolous spending theme!!!

I love lampshades. Can you post a link to yours?

These are my lampshades! I got them from https://www.lushlampshades.co.uk/ , came across their Greenwich shop by accident & couldn’t resist.

When my exh left me for someone else, and I, for the first time in 10 years, had access to my own money and accounts, I bought a £250 necklace for myself as a Christmas present, which is the most amount of money I have ever spent on myself. I felt sad as I wouldn't be getting any Christmas presents but as it was my daughter decorated a rock for me AND i had my necklace that felt very liberating as I was never 'allowed' to do anything like that before. ON Christmas day night I danced around the living room singing 'These Boots IM wearing, I bought em' It was a really lovely Christmas in the end! Never spent anything like that on myself again but I still wear the necklace with pride.

FortunateCatsGlugDaquirisAllEveningBlindly · 07/03/2025 09:10

A pair of Buffet Crampon clarinets.
The model was probably way above my play grade when I bought them, and they probably still are now if I am honest.
But they are a joy to play, which I do almost every day.

You’re fine I didn’t take it wrong 😑, we all get emotional about our fur babies big and small.

£359 on a kitchen aid stand mixer in the sale. I was eyeing one up for a few years but couldn’t bring myself to justify the spend. But in the end I decided to get it for myself last summer and so pleased I did! I (and my friends and family) are really enjoying all the output!

I absolutely loathed my longed for 'treat yourself' KitchenAid. Every cake I made with it sank. Gave it to our daughter and went back to my Kenwood food processor. Don't often make cakes now, but everyone of them rises.
