what one-off extravagant purchases do you have ? *not a gloating thread*

A friend of a friend lives in Greece and has recently brought themselves an underwater sea scooter. A top of the range one. They are not well off by any means, but could afford to treat themselves to this. It looks a real smart piece of kit.

It got me thinking, we don't have any one-off extravagant purchases. Not that you have to have any, of course. There has just never been anything we have really wanted, with the exception of a new car. But this thread is not about buying to that level.

Cartier Tank Francais stainless steel and 9 ct gold watch. Bought it 30 years ago and never take it off. Judging by second hand prices, it has been a good investment (although I didn't buy it with that in mind)

We have a campervan I mean its a very old second hand one and we can't drive it a lot of places now due to LEZ but it's still a luxury. We use it a lot from Easter til October on camping trips with the kids.

So lucky what's lez please ?

American fridge freezers are not as great as you imagine. At least not the traditional ones. The fridge shelves are really far back from where you're stood and you have to bend down to get to half of your stuff and the freezer only has shelves! Sounds great but not in reality as when you're trying to stack tied up bags of veg/chips/half-empty boxes, it all comes crashing down when you open the freezer door again. That's if you can even get it closed!

We absolutely love ours and this isn't our experience at all. The shelves are fine (not far back) and we have a couple of good sized drawers in the freezer as well as the shelves but we don't have any issue with things falling over on them. Half empty boxes fit into the door but there's so much space we really don't have to jam things in anywhere. Our old freezer with nothing but drawers was an absolute nightmare for snapping if anything got slightly caught when you tried to pull a drawer out and I hated it. I have issues with my back and knees which is why we went for the American style as I can put things I'm using near the top of both the fridge and the freezer instead of always having to bend down to get stuff out of the freezer like before.

Is it easy to source bedding? Is it expensive bedding?

We have bedding from the white company for our emperor bed. Quite expensive but you get that hotel luxury bed feel every night! And where do you spend most of the time when you’re home? Plus super convenient when you have little clandestine coming during the night 😀

I spent 6k on fitted wardrobes for my bedroom and I have zero regrets. Literally the best purchase I've ever made.

Twattergy · 06/03/2025 21:15

Huge garden parasol, 3x3 m with heavy base on wheels and easy up handle thingy. Think it was about £750 which is a bit excessive for a parasol but it's super high quality and I'd rather buy once and buy well.

7k gaming PC
Two 3D printers
Westfield kit car

My two steel pans, nearly 2k. And I'm an old white woman who, if anyone knows me, am now completely outed. Eek!

My Dualit toaster,
Because who spends over £100 on a toaster?

Is it really good?
I was thinking about one with the baskets so I can get rid of DHs breville toastie maker that's a horror to clean, and he leaves cluttering up the worktop.

Vinotinto78 · 06/03/2025 21:36

Dropped a heck of a lot (for us), on an old Land Rover Defender. It’s unreliable, costs a bloody fortune to run and is the coolest fucking car on the planet. Zero regrets.

Hot tub

I don't understand the appeal of hot tubs. I wouldn't want to wallow in a hot incubator of bacteria, dead skin cells and fecal matter but you do you, I guess.

livelovelough24 · 06/03/2025 21:52

It is so depressing that I could not come up with one thing. I am so poor. 😩

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 06/03/2025 21:52

A silk duvet. It’s an all season version.

I’ll never sleep under a polyester duvet again! 🥵🥵🥵

Hey count your blessings.
What do you have in your house that makes you happy or makes life easier?

Lots of people have listed what are essentially pets - our pets are fairly budget fish 🐟 but DS loves them.

My youngest was an IVF gamble 🎰

I have a little lego car £13 Dune Buggy i love it.

Our board game table that also doubles as a dining table. Doesn’t get used as often as it should for games because the kids are grown and our schedules don’t always align. But youngest sometimes has his friends over, they use it for DnD sessions. But still love it and would buy it again.

Just replaced our 8 year old and slightly damaged so cheaper than it could have been sofa. It was too low, the cushions were very high maintenance and we all came to hate it. Replacement bought in the sales and absolutely has to last for years. So far seems to be settling in well.🤞

What’s a board game table…? This sounds intriguing!

lissie123 · 06/03/2025 22:09

My Ioniq 5 EV car and a hot tub. Living to regret the hot tub though.

Witknit · 06/03/2025 22:10

Maine coon cats. I had 4 rescue cats but always wanted a maine coon. During the pandemic I worked 14 hour days in the NHS. I also lost my daughter and after all that I just thought life is too short and this is something I've always wanted.
Best thing I ever treated myself too.
Next week I collect cats number 8 and 9.
They bring me so much joy

You do you I guess...

So condescending. No one said you should get one.

Just because they're not your thing, doesn't mean no one else is allowed to like them.

Mine is a bed OP. Cost 2.5k and makes me smile each bedtime. Reasonably more when the suitable bedding I had to buy for it is taken into account.

@LilySLE it’s a dining table with removable leaves, underneath is a space you can use for board games (or jigsaw puzzles 🧩 etc). You can leave the game in situ if you need to take a break and use it for eating.

Other makes are available but we got ours from Geeknson geeknson.co.uk/bristol-table/

NazMedusa · 06/03/2025 22:17

45k on a BMW X5 (second hand) a few years ago. Ended up giving birth to our 3rd child in it a month after buying it so the sentimental value went up hugely!

I love lampshades. Can you post a link to yours?

swillie · 06/03/2025 22:28

Spent a small fortune on a proper coffee machine. The bean to cup one. Best purchase ever! Don't regret a single penny that I spent on it!

A £6K World of Women and £4K Meebit NFT. Absolutely love them along with my XCOPY Max Pain NFT. Most days I realise I'm crazy, haha
