what one-off extravagant purchases do you have ? *not a gloating thread*

A friend of a friend lives in Greece and has recently brought themselves an underwater sea scooter. A top of the range one. They are not well off by any means, but could afford to treat themselves to this. It looks a real smart piece of kit.

It got me thinking, we don't have any one-off extravagant purchases. Not that you have to have any, of course. There has just never been anything we have really wanted, with the exception of a new car. But this thread is not about buying to that level.

*edited to add this is a no judgement thread

7 acres of woodland.

curious79 · 06/03/2025 07:27

Chinoiserie wallpaper for our bedroom. Paper backed silk, amazing tree and floral design. All in £20k for the one room but it brings me great joy. I love waking up in it

Westfacing · 06/03/2025 07:35

After following a thread on Style & Beauty I bought a pair of Penelope Chilvers ankle boots - love them to bits and wear them often, so not really an extravagance because they should last a long time, so cost per wear, blah blah...

The extravagance was going back to get two pairs of her lovely socks at £25 a pair - I've never spent £25 on a pair of socks!

I have three little girls, they bring so much joy into my life

Aww. I've a black one and relative has just bought a white mini!

WhoWhereWhatWhy · 06/03/2025 07:56

Mine is a nearly 7 foot wide emperor bed (divan) too. Obviously had to buy a new headboard, duvet, longer pillows, bedding, mattress protector too, which bumped the cost up. But we sleep so much better as a result of having it, I don’t regret a penny of what it cost. Someone asked about bedding - we got ours from The Duvet Store.

Cartier diamond white gold watch. I sometimes wear this round the house as I love it so much.

Pod room at the end of the garden. It’s a little sanctuary for me.

DH bought himself a peloton.

£290 boots 😳

Laughingravy · 06/03/2025 08:17

@Stirabout
Ours is 7ft x 10ft. If you are thinking of buying there do plenty of research. When it comes to buying anything other than food and drink haggling is expected and it can get a little overwhelming and wearisome.

My flute. It brings me untold joy every day.

Likewise … started learning as an adult. Childhood dream. Mine in a pearl with solid silver head joint… not fancy as far as flares go but gives me such delight!

I'm lucky I look after and ride other peoples horses or I'd have no money to spend. On frivolous stags heads!

Thank you. Off to work on DH!!

We've got a Nordic spa (those wooden spa tubs where the water is heated by a fire). It's never been used and just sits there shaming me every time I walk past. This thread has prompted me to put it up for sale.

Edited

I want one of these. How much you selling it for? Does it have the pizza oven on the back? 😂

A coffee machine.
Three crowns on my teeth.
Cataract surgery, which was mega expensive.

Just out of interest, why was your cataract surgery expensive? Mine was free on the NHS, and booked and completed within 4 weeks last year.

I had slow growing cataracts for a long time, which suddenly became fast growing and urgent. The referral was January 2020 and of course, covid put a hold on everything. By August I couldn’t drive, read without very large print, or do very much at all, so the only alternative was to pay. It was done at the end of September. Unfortunate timing really.

OMG. Don't lose it! I've just seen they have one for £157k! That is nuts. Who would buy that?

Crazy money...but that is a beautiful pen!!

I can't get over that there are people out there that would buy a PEN for £150k+++

ChristmasPudd1990 · 06/03/2025 09:05

A Tesla. 🥰

Shinyandnew1 · 06/03/2025 09:38

But I am probably the only person that uses it as their interesting fact as an icebreaker

Ha ha-I bet you're not! I can think of two separate people who have used this as ice-breakers on courses I've been on in the last six months. They were both very pleased with theirs as well.

That's reassuring! And on that basis, I take it back. It isn't as outing as I feared. Phew!

I can totally relate to the smugness. Such a non fact to share as an icebreaker. And clearly, if you sleep in a giant bed, you bloody love it. I know I do.

The Trans Siberian Railway journey.

Would you recommend it? I've been looking into a train journeys as a holiday for after my DH retires.

Transport Siberian, Orient Express, Blue Train etc

Ironic that you are issuing orders with no authority to do so.
