what one-off extravagant purchases do you have ? *not a gloating thread*

A friend of a friend lives in Greece and has recently brought themselves an underwater sea scooter. A top of the range one. They are not well off by any means, but could afford to treat themselves to this. It looks a real smart piece of kit.

It got me thinking, we don't have any one-off extravagant purchases. Not that you have to have any, of course. There has just never been anything we have really wanted, with the exception of a new car. But this thread is not about buying to that level.

*edited to add this is a no judgement thread

Love this thread!

As a hobby rider, I’m not at all surprised by the volume of horse-related content.

Not sure about mine. Probably my dog: 8 year old (pre covid) cockapoo. DH was gobsmacked that he cost around £1500 at the time, obvs that felt less shocking a couple of years later when they were going for way more. But regardless of price, he’s my absolute favourite child - a really sweet, laid back, loving happy dog who has brought an inane amount of love and joy to our family over the years.

@Shannith i love that stags head! Would you DM me where you got it, please? My sister and I would both KILL for something like that!!

Can't get dm working but it's from these guys.

They do 2 sizes and lots of styles. Mine is a big one

I'm lucky I look after and ride other peoples horses or I'd have no money to spend. On frivolous stags heads!

noodlezoodle · 05/03/2025 22:04

@Shannith that stag's head is absolutely beautiful!

I'm lucky, my horse's are free (other people's) or that would be my pretty much total extravagance!!

Friendofdennis · 05/03/2025 23:08

My beautiful Wedgewood Butterfly Bloom tea set. I started collecting during lockdown I hunted all the pieces down on eBay but they were still very expensive. Exquisite though

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 05/03/2025 21:33

Most recently, a dualit toaster and kettle.

Previously:

A 12 year old UNBROKEN chestnut mare.

She was actually free but this horse had a wardrobe to die for. Bridles, rugs, boots, saddle pads, sheepskin numnah, sheepskin boots I spent thousands of pounds on all sorts on professional gear for both me and her. We were happy hackers 😂

Then there was the £500 a month livery, the £7k colic surgery vets bill, the farrier bill every month because this girl could not keep a shoe on her foot for more than two weeks.

But she was worth every penny and I'd do it all again for her ❤️

We (friend and I) got a BOGOF horse.

Most. Expensive. Horse. Ever.

Loved him 😂

Had a coat made by a proper seamstress with my own choice of material, lining, buttons. Had lots of fittings which I enjoyed very much.

It's gorgeous and I wear it all the time. Its not ostentatious, but will look fab when I am old too.

£1500 coffee machine that will make almost anything you can get in Costa/Starbucks without loads of faff. It's self cleaning and all that jazz too. Got it at the start of lockdown with the money we'd set aside for going on holiday with.
It's used multiple times a day by the whole household, I adore it.

This sounds fab. Have you got a link please.

Iamnotalemming · 05/03/2025 23:27

AGA

Ice cream machine

French saucepans and casseroles with lifetime guarantees

Never realised until now all my big purchases are kitchen related!

Hermes silk scarf.

Ive bought far more expensive things like cars, laptops, art, etc, but my silk scarf was a treat as i neither needed it or have the innate sense of style to needed wear it effortlessly. But i adore it. Its just so pretty and soft and luxurious and wonderful.

I still have the one my late OH insisted I buy in Liberty's, I have other silk scarves but the quality of this one, even after 50 years, puts the others to shame.

When I first left home I got a chocolate fountain because my mum never let me have one at my birthday parties. This was very expensive and frivolous for a 18 year old student.
Now I’m a grown up I have a top of the range one, which was still frivolous and expensive, but I just think it’s a cool thing to have. It scratches a serious childhood itch. It’s not that expensive in the grand scheme of things, but something in me just really wanted a really good one.

@Catsandcannedbeans

I should get myself a Mr Frosty for the same reason 🤣

Shelves for an alcove in my sitting room. They are solid ash and look very rustic . They were about £100 per shelf and we have 4 in each alcove . I love them. I’ve never spent so much on shelves ever .

I didn't think we were allowed to use Ash anymore because of die back.
I will be glad if we can as I have half a bloody ash tree in the garage.

More unexpected than extravagant, but I did once go out to buy a bag of peat and come home with a cabriolet.
Quite an investment really, because 10 years later, I still have it.

Rather like the time we went to Sainsburys to get the shop - and put an accepted offer on a house using the phone box lol

Crispynoodle · 05/03/2025 23:42

Janome straight stitch professional sewing machine

Laughingravy · 05/03/2025 23:49

When we got this house I didn't want an Ikea wardrobe or something similar - So I got a 150 year old linen press, that is glorious and huge. Only £1000. I've convinced myself it an investment.....

And on our recent trip to Marrakesh got a really big Berber rug. After a lot of slightly uncomfortable haggling we got it down to £2000, which isn't a bargain but cheaper than here. The bonus was it actually arrived in the post a week or so and it is the one we bought! We'd laughed about the chances of getting a rug we liked and getting it home and the dangers of haggling. And currently it's rolled up waiting for the room to be done.

Outing, but hey ho. And emperor sized bed. 7ft wide. I freakin love it.

Yes I have one! Difficult to get bedding for it!

suki1964 · 06/03/2025 00:10

Up until this week, I would have said my sage coffee machine. Im the only coffee drinker but when I finish work at 11am, its the first thing I do - make a decent coffee

However I have just treated myself to an e-bike. I love cycling, but I cant do the hills anymore and I live in NI and there are hills everywhere. Luckily I got a two year interest free card to pay for it.

Private school x 2 (but cheaper than moving - and not something I’m personally benefiting from!)
Once upon a time we had Freddie’s Flowers which felt like a treat but then private school fees hit and the quality of the flowers went down a bit at the same time.
An under-used secondhand Peloton…

Private school is our biggest extravagance. It's definitely an extravagance, as the state schools are certainly very good around here. But everything is just a bit nicer, smaller, easier and calmer at the prep. Very much an ongoing cost though!

I have a Mulberry bag, but I paid for it with JL vouchers so I don't feel it was a splurge. It was one of the smallest bags, and I gave up using it after I had dcs as it couldn't hold all the extra random bits I needed.

Out of all the other things listed on this thread that I don't have but would like, I'd list a piano (I don't play but took lessons as a child) and a bean to cup coffee machine. We can afford them but are lacking in space to justify it.

Wingingitbestican · 06/03/2025 00:41

We built a sauna in our garden 😀

faithspikebuffy · 06/03/2025 01:22

For random things
I went food shopping and bought a sofa instead. Also went for a walk and bought an apartment BlushConfused

My friend has 9 horses, her husband thinks she has 3. All bay mares with no white bits on them Grin

Interested to know what size the rug was
If I’m up for haggling it would be interesting to know how much they are prepared to sell for

Ooh I like this thread.

Over the years for me it's been:

Safe coffee machine
Givenchy handbag
Tag heuer watch

I'm just eyeing up a LV never full for a big birthday coming up

I won’t say horses since I will absolutely continue to buy them so they’re not a one-off. Grin

Instead I’ll say my great big eff-off American rig that I bought when I moved to the States. I’d always liked the size and convenience of them but obviously we don’t have anything like it. Similar truck and trailer (float) below for reference.

Ooh a 1-ton - nice! ❤️ Is it rough in the back? Several years ago a friend had one and my bum would leave the seat every time we hit a bump
DH has an (old) F-350, I’m a baby with an F-150

CottonCandyLand · 06/03/2025 04:45

I guess mine would be two genuine Persian rugs.
Fucking dog crapped on one so it’s now put away until we have no more dogs (so ages away) because I’m worried they’d still detect it and use it as a toilet.

AlwaysFreezing · 06/03/2025 07:03

ChampagneLassie · 05/03/2025 20:47

Why is it outing? Do you think you’re the only person with an emperor bed? 🤣

No, not at all. But I am probably the only person that uses it as their interesting fact as an icebreaker (and I do a lot of those!) And I do bang on about it a lot because of how much I love it!

So if my sister is here, hello!

People have asked if it is difficult to get bedding for it. Nope. We have 2 (double) duvets so that's standard. The sheets come from the big bed company.

I also bought big pillows for it. Slightly harder to get the right pillowcases for those though.
