what one-off extravagant purchases do you have ? *not a gloating thread*

A friend of a friend lives in Greece and has recently brought themselves an underwater sea scooter. A top of the range one. They are not well off by any means, but could afford to treat themselves to this. It looks a real smart piece of kit.

It got me thinking, we don't have any one-off extravagant purchases. Not that you have to have any, of course. There has just never been anything we have really wanted, with the exception of a new car. But this thread is not about buying to that level.

*edited to add this is a no judgement thread

I’ve just been given a settlement agreement in work due to being discriminated against after maternity leave. Mostly it’s going in sensible areas like mortgage and savings but I plan to spend about a grand on a May half term holiday (probably Butlins 😆) Can’t wait!!!

Love this thread!

As a hobby rider, I’m not at all surprised by the volume of horse-related content.

Not sure about mine. Probably my dog: 8 year old (pre covid) cockapoo. DH was gobsmacked that he cost around £1500 at the time, obvs that felt less shocking a couple of years later when they were going for way more. But regardless of price, he’s my absolute favourite child - a really sweet, laid back, loving happy dog who has brought an inane amount of love and joy to our family over the years.

@Shannith i love that stags head! Would you DM me where you got it, please? My sister and I would both KILL for something like that!!

I paid £14k for my current horse but that’s just the start of it 🙈

Saddle £5k
Bridle, rugs, boots, grooming stuff, another £1-2k
Cheap lorry £25k plus running costs
Livery £500 a month.

Add in lessons, clinics, competitions, farrier, physio, basic vet issues, insurance, club memberships, wormers, clipping, it never ends !!

Thank you. I was only being nosey. I read on here so many people bought horses. That's lovely you've got something that you love. It's well worth it if it's something you love-good on you for doing that :)

Titasaducksarse · 05/03/2025 22:18

Luxury vinyl tile laminate for the kitchen diner. Being fitted in 2 weeks. I'm so excited to be rid of the cold porcelain tiles. With fitting about £2000.

Biggest ever extravagance...new camper in 2018 cost £48k. Same van is about £25 k more now!!!

Re horses...I rode in a different era where you'd get a decent pony for under £1000 lol

Am intrigued and just a little bit nosey of course. How much do people pay for horses?

Few years ago, but 3K for the pony, about 1K on tack, then 3K a year livery, monthly insurance, treats, replacing ripped rugs, fly masks, halters and lead ropes, probably at least £100 a month, 6 weekly farrier shoes on the front and a back trim £50, Vet bills not very much as he was a tough little blighter, but potentially the skys the limit.

Then there is gear for the rider, boots, jods, hats, gloves, socks, thermals for winter, riding jackets, for the yard and hacking out. Then you might want to get into showing, so show jacket, breeches, boots, shirt and hat, not to mention you might get to the level that needs a dressage or jumping saddle and tack. Or both.

Keeping clean stuff, for the horse and the tack, grooming aids, grooming kit, fly spray, worming meds. Lessons, clinics, fees and travel to shows.

If I hadn't had a pony and saved the money instead, I could have retired probably 5 years earlier. But, I still don't begrudge or regret it.

Oh, and then there is the injuries to the rider, broken finger, broken wrist, broken ribs, broken collar bone, black eyes, horse fly bites, huge bruise from a horse biting me, (not mine) and squashed toes that are now a permanent funny shape.

We bought a Peleton and it was the thing Ive most regretted buying. Ended up as a clothes horse after the first month till we sold it about ten months later at a loss.

BeardofHagrid · 05/03/2025 22:29

My flute. It brings me untold joy every day.

Stirabout · 05/03/2025 22:31

Nice piano, viola and harp

I didn't think I really belonged in this thread cause I am too skint to be really extravagant but i did spend £1800 on a bike so i do. It's my favourite thing I own and i have travelled many happy kilometres on it. No regrets at all.

Ooh, I like that. Our ancient toaster is dying so I've been browsing toasters on Amazon and this might be a contender!

I do recommend it - especially since it’s not only pretty, but you can fit in croissants or baguettes, the slot is really wide. I have it since 2018 or so, using it at least 4 times a week, and no issues!

Winterscoming77 · 05/03/2025 22:38

Pool table which we all love
Peloton tread which I love

Love our dualit toaster too @cakeorwine
and the architects kettle to match 😁
and the blender. We love Dualit !

Just bought a Ninja xl air fryer…last week….I haven’t braved it yet but dh loves it even though it’s not by dualit 🤣

Not my costs but step daughter hs pony £10K purchase and £1k monthly livery think she’s mid range

Sage coffee machine.
V extravagant for us.
Used daily.

This was going to be mine!

I use it daily but I still have buyers guilt about whether I needed to spend £1200 or whether a cheaper version would've sufficed...... Confused

Dontlletmedownbruce · 05/03/2025 22:44

Electric bikes for dh and I. I use mine about 4 times a year but Dh uses his all the time to commute. However for those occasions I use it, it's been amazing. I live at the top of a steep hill, a difficult cycle from a lovely cycle path. Now I can access that path no problem. I've used it mostly when going to a concert venue or to the city on busy nights so I don't have to worry about transport home. Cranking it up and gliding uphill is amazing!!

We are bringing 3 kids to NYC soon, I can't even think about the overall cost. Flights were around 3k and hotel 4.5k. It's going to be a once in a lifetime trip and one we always remember so hopefully worth it.

Almost forgot my kitchen aid mixer. Amazing product

Dappy777 · 05/03/2025 22:52

My weakness is books - especially first editions. I have bought first editions of Evelyn Waugh, Aldous Huxley, Virginia Woolf and several others. I’d like to get my grubby little mitts on a first edition of Dickens and Jane Austen as well, if any eccentric billionaires are reading.

Oh no don't say that, we are just about to make that rather ridiculous extravagant purchase! Why didn't it work out, don't you use it? Or is it just a massive pain to deal with?

We have a hot tub and use it all the time.
chilling, easing muscles after a run, family time (we have waterproof cards and play rummy) etc.

northerngirly · 05/03/2025 22:54

My Christmas Tree! I spent £800 on it when I was 23, the only money I spent from my inheritance for years 😂

Its huge and beautiful and I love it so much, 8 years of use and still going strong.

Arraminta · 05/03/2025 22:55

Not bought yet, but planning to buy myself a little narrow boat to play on because I've always wanted one since I was a little girl. I'm going to furnish and decorate it in a kitsch extravaganza of Cath Kidston, vintage Laura Ashley and fairy lights. It's going to be the most ridiculously, self-indulgent toy ever, but I can't wait.

I don’t regret buying ours it’s used frequently we’ve had it three years after two inflatable ones busted.

Quality upright piano for DD with silent option. She plays it every day for pleasure.
Two season tickets for every match at Lord's for me and DD, fifth year running.
A second home in Norfolk (I know, I know).

Baggyprincess · 05/03/2025 23:01

A high end watch in my 20s, still love it and wear it continuously. A lockdown puppy (who then ignored me for 3 years) but she was such a fab mental health distraction and I now, finally, get the most glorious cuddles.

White miniature schnauzer puppy. She cost a ridiculous amount of money and drives me nuts. Currently fast asleep on my lap and I love her to bits.
Worth every penny!

I have three little girls, they bring so much joy into my life
