what one-off extravagant purchases do you have ? *not a gloating thread*

A friend of a friend lives in Greece and has recently brought themselves an underwater sea scooter. A top of the range one. They are not well off by any means, but could afford to treat themselves to this. It looks a real smart piece of kit.

It got me thinking, we don't have any one-off extravagant purchases. Not that you have to have any, of course. There has just never been anything we have really wanted, with the exception of a new car. But this thread is not about buying to that level.

*edited to add this is a no judgement thread

Gigantic bed

My guitar. A PRS SE, the signature ‘Paul’s Guitar’ model with abalone shell, bird, inlays. It’s a gorgeous shade of quilted blue. To me, it is a thing of beauty and it sounds amazing.
It will last me until I die and I love it.

My new mare, that I bought just over a year ago, but we are a horsey family, so while DH would love this to be a one off extravagance, it won't be. I once went to Your Horse Live with the kids and made the mistake of going around the rescue village with them. When we got home, DH asked if we had bought anything nice? "You might want to sit down for this," I said.

.😂😂😂

God you've just reminded me

Went to Cheltenham to watch the paddy power.

Came back with a racehorse.

Shannith · 05/03/2025 20:44

And a philippe Stark super king sized bed.

Brought tnat 13 years ago and it's my favourite thing in the world.

SnakebitesandSambucas · 05/03/2025 20:46

@MeAndMyGhost sleep can never be underestimated! Hope you got a good mattress 😁

Outing, but hey ho. And emperor sized bed. 7ft wide. I freakin love it.

Why is it outing? Do you think you’re the only person with an emperor bed? 🤣

Howmanycatsistoomany · 05/03/2025 20:50

Arab yearling by my all-time favourite Arab stallion. Saw the ad within minutes of it being posted online (I was having a brew break and scrolling ponies for sale while waiting for the kettle to boil, as you do 😁) and did the deal over the phone, before the brew was ready. I had a bit of money my Grandad left me and I was waiting for the right thing to spend it on. My little orange horse makes my heart happy every time I look at him.

> A £10K antique dining set. It's our table and chairs for life and it'll hold it's value but still, £10K 😳

> A £700 pair of patent leather Versace high top trainers with gold buttons. They're really garish and OTT. I love them even though they rub a bit

It’s funny how we all have different views on these things - I didn’t blink at the idea of spending 10k on a dining set, but £700 on a pair of trainers is 🤯. Mind you, I do seem to trash trainers very quickly.

Our big splurge was a proper home automation system when we renovated (Crestron). Can’t even bring myself to write down how much it all cost. Massive.waste.of.money 😩

Mrsknowitall · 05/03/2025 20:53

A tourer caravan, we brought it towards the end of last summer so can’t wait for the new season to begin

My Japanese toilet! I hate being away from home now!
Also, the robot mower

On a less practical level, the very expensive vintage watch I bought my husband. Worth every penny to see his face every time he puts it on!

ZiggyZowie · 05/03/2025 20:56

A new kitchen and bathroom extension

@CoolOtter which company did you use for the Japanese toilet as I want one. Thank you

25 years ago, a Georgian foiled-back diamond brooch - I had nowhere to live then (halls of residence), no job, student debt, no decent clothes, decent underwear, decent shoes, etc. and a bloody brooch - I just put it on my credit card. Nowhere to wear it then, nowhere to wear it now - and my dd says 'it is fugly'. I look it at now and just ask 'why?' P.S. Did not increase in value because nothing special and, as dd says, fugly.

Could you have it adapted to a necklace so that it’s more wearable?

I do…😂 I got this Magimix see-through one one years back and am still delighted with it:

Ooh, I like that. Our ancient toaster is dying so I've been browsing toasters on Amazon and this might be a contender!

Arraminta · 05/03/2025 21:04

A very pretty, but crumbling farmhouse in Tuscany. Lots of fun and lots of hard work and my God what a money pit! It drained us nearly dry but luckily still sold it for a very healthy profit. So many happy memories though.

Serennityoption · 05/03/2025 21:09

I haven’t got anything but if I could bring myself to spend the money, I would love a pair of sapphire and diamond stud earrings. They cost nearly £2000. I would be scared of losing them, if I wore them.

brunettemic · 05/03/2025 21:11

Does £220 carbon plated running shoes count?

Finetoday · 05/03/2025 21:12

Another victim of the horse world racket !
New custom saddle with a patent welt - £5k

Also love my proper hot tub. I’m never bored of it.

Brought a fancy car once, brand new. Stolen in first year, won’t be doing that again.

We bought it from Porcelanosa

slapmyarseandcallmemary · 05/03/2025 21:14

A Philips IPL. Extravagant for me.

SeenYourArse · 05/03/2025 21:16

I bought myself last week (with saved up money of my own and some of a little bit of money my granny left me, she passed very quickly back in November) a 1.8 carat E colour Vvs2 diamond solitaire on an 18k gold band, it’s a engagement ring upgrade 15 years in ❤️ I will never take it off and will always remember my lovely granny whilst I’m wearing it.
Also I have a pair of Alexander McQueen trainers and a pair of Balenciaga trainers both horrifically expensive but I work hard and deserve it and don't spend unless I have the money spare to do so without the children going without or anything else being affected so why not.

MabelMoo23 · 05/03/2025 21:17

The most expensive thing we have is £2,000 on a miniature dachshund puppy from a KC breeder that I researched religiously and after being vetted extensively by the breeder we had to wait a year for her to arrive.

she’s 3 now and we can’t even begin to imagine life without her. Our SEN children utterly adore her and she’s just wonderful and a fantastic temperament and she completes our family.

the most I’ve ever spent is the same amount of money on a Tag Heur watch for my husband on our wedding day.

It has a great big soldered pin at the back, which won't allow it to sit flat and it indeed looks like badly made costume jewellery... It is also rose-cut. WHAT WAS I THINKING????? And the claws... On close examination with the loupe the stones are not even properly set! Good lesson though, excellent.
