what one-off extravagant purchases do you have ? *not a gloating thread*

A friend of a friend lives in Greece and has recently brought themselves an underwater sea scooter. A top of the range one. They are not well off by any means, but could afford to treat themselves to this. It looks a real smart piece of kit.

It got me thinking, we don't have any one-off extravagant purchases. Not that you have to have any, of course. There has just never been anything we have really wanted, with the exception of a new car. But this thread is not about buying to that level.

*edited to add this is a no judgement thread

oh my car 30k after receiving some inheritance. one I've always wanted. No mortgage to pay off so didn't feel guilty about spending the money on anything important.

Sage coffee machine.
V extravagant for us.
Used daily.

So did we, extravagant for us too. Got it day after boxing day and also in everyday use. Love it!

House in the costas

Showdogworkingdog · 05/03/2025 21:33

A Everhot range cooker. Always, always wanted one, could never afford it then last year our 20+ year old cooker stopped working and needed replacing and I thought fuck it, if I don’t get one now I never will. Ridiculous buy but I love it.

Most recently, a dualit toaster and kettle.

Previously:

A 12 year old UNBROKEN chestnut mare.

She was actually free but this horse had a wardrobe to die for. Bridles, rugs, boots, saddle pads, sheepskin numnah, sheepskin boots I spent thousands of pounds on all sorts on professional gear for both me and her. We were happy hackers 😂

Then there was the £500 a month livery, the £7k colic surgery vets bill, the farrier bill every month because this girl could not keep a shoe on her foot for more than two weeks.

But she was worth every penny and I'd do it all again for her ❤️

nonevernotever · 05/03/2025 21:35

Many years ago my horse, and his even more expensive saddle. More recently some recorders and a voice flute.

Arcticrival · 05/03/2025 21:36

Am intrigued and just a little bit nosey of course. How much do people pay for horses?

@krustykittens this is the company https://luxury-pool-tables.co.uk/
Cannot speak highly enough of them, it was DHs 40th birthday present and they went above and beyond to help me. Guy that fitted it was also brilliant.

Ok now I want one of these!!!

Catsandcannedbeans · 05/03/2025 21:42

When I first left home I got a chocolate fountain because my mum never let me have one at my birthday parties. This was very expensive and frivolous for a 18 year old student.
Now I’m a grown up I have a top of the range one, which was still frivolous and expensive, but I just think it’s a cool thing to have. It scratches a serious childhood itch. It’s not that expensive in the grand scheme of things, but something in me just really wanted a really good one.

@AMurderofMurderingCrows can we be friends and compare our sheepskin collection and our vet bills !!

ThatAgileLimeCat · 05/03/2025 21:47

Spent over £3.5k on garden furniture for our tiny garden. As soon as I ordered it I felt sick and worried it was a huge mistake.

Bloody love it! We use it far more than was expecting to ,and it's just gorgeous.

Do regret the £50 fire pit though. Never used it and it just sits there, reminding me that Ive wasted money.

FrostyMorn · 05/03/2025 21:51

A garden room that's properly plastered with nice flooring and heating which I use as an art studio (in my spare time- I'm just an amateur). Love it!

MatriarchCaz · 05/03/2025 21:52

Not expensive really but 2 Air Fryers, 1 basket type the other has metal shelfs. Best of both worlds 😁

I paid £14k for my current horse but that’s just the start of it 🙈

Saddle £5k
Bridle, rugs, boots, grooming stuff, another £1-2k
Cheap lorry £25k plus running costs
Livery £500 a month.

Add in lessons, clinics, competitions, farrier, physio, basic vet issues, insurance, club memberships, wormers, clipping, it never ends !!

Expensive was a redesigned back garden with patio, pebbles and astroturf. Love it, and am greatful every time I go in my dream garden.

A Mini Cooper convertible. I am retired and realised I had never had a mini or a convertible so looked around for ‘something for the summer’ last year. 6 weeks later the engine blew up and I have spent twice what the mini cost to put a new engine in!
I love her to bits (even though she’s a bit of a money pit!) and have my big padded jacket, Harris tweed cap and leather gloves and if it isn’t actually raining when I set off, then the lid is down!! Christmas Day and Boxing Day were particularly sunny!

WellsAndThistles · 05/03/2025 21:58

A pedigree kitten as no cat rescue centre within a 70 mile radius from me had any moggy kittens.

I make sure to buy myself a pay day present every month though, usually max £100 but generally less than that.

My sofa. Cost 5k but don't regret it . Best buy .

Where from?

noodlezoodle · 05/03/2025 22:04

@Shannith that stag's head is absolutely beautiful!

Cojones · 05/03/2025 22:06

Our board game table that also doubles as a dining table. Doesn’t get used as often as it should for games because the kids are grown and our schedules don’t always align. But youngest sometimes has his friends over, they use it for DnD sessions. But still love it and would buy it again.

Just replaced our 8 year old and slightly damaged so cheaper than it could have been sofa. It was too low, the cushions were very high maintenance and we all came to hate it. Replacement bought in the sales and absolutely has to last for years. So far seems to be settling in well.🤞

I’ve had plenty of free and cheap ones, but mostly I buy them young for mid to high five figures, develop and show them, and sell them for more to get something else young and silly and in need of training. I did import one last year that was a bit more than that and will probably keep and show him longer. Though as a disclaimer, this was not what I was doing when I still lived in England! The prices, shows, and market are very different in the US.

I joke that it’s my professional hobby.

HurdyGurdy19 · 05/03/2025 22:07

My husband, spurred on by a visit to Kielder Observatory, on a perfect night, went and bought himself an enormous telescope.

A ridiculous purchase, as we live in a very light polluted area.

He has had it out three times in the four years he's owned it (it's so heavy, it's a real performance to get it out and set it up in the garden), and it has been moved around and stored in every room in the house, apart from the bathroom. And that's only because the bathroom is probably smaller than the bloody telescope.

Will he admit it was a waste of money and get rid of it? Not a bloody chance.

😂 awww no, you too. At one point I thought about just getting my wages paid into my vets account and them giving me the pennies that were left at the end of the month.

That sheepskin addiction is real. Maybe we should go to SA (sheepskin anonymous) together... 😆

Trip on the orient express from London to Venice. Then travelled around Italy for a few weeks in style. It is a proper bucket list experience and it’s like staying in a precious museum, and a lot of the scenery (through the alps) is stunning!

To say it’s a bucket list trip though…. I am saving to go again. It’s like one night with meals and some drinks (not all - there’s a bar) and it was over 5k when we went. Think the price has increased.

Im not flash at all and it felt really weird but lovely doing that holiday and I enjoyed getting very dressed up too! 🤩

I am so jealous!! I’m not into “material things” and tend to be pretty frugal really, I have to be as DH is a spender! But this has been on my bucket list of things to do forever!!! I am hoping maybe one day I could part with the money for such a worthy extravagance and not cry 😂

CRCGran · 05/03/2025 22:09

I had a nice engagement ring many years ago, but always hankered after a proper, good sized solitaire diamond ring. Got one last summer. I absolutely love it. When I wear it I keep looking at the light catching it.
