Zelensky - feeling quite sad

Bakewelltart1 · 01/03/2025 20:18

I know that there are several threads about him, but I’ve watched the interview again today.
I don’t know what’s made me feel more sad - how exhausted and disappointed he looked, the fact that English isn’t his first language and it must have been hard to speak, let alone speak whilst being verbally attacked, or the suit question.
When the war is over, I want to buy that man the best suit money can buy!
How can anyone kick someone when they are so down anyway.

@DonaldTrump @Molly70
Because these negotiations have been going on behind closed doors for weeks and they should have stayed behind closed doors.

Do you think there was some manipulation going on here??

There could well have been

@Molly70
What negotiations? You mean the ones between Putin and Trump, which excluded both Ukraine and Europe? Those ones?
They reminded me of those between Ribbentrop and Molotov, when they decided how to carve up Europe.

Yes, it's a gesture - he's wearing simple, practical clothing. It's a clear message that his nation is at war.

This. It is obvious that he dresses practically and for good reason.

Bitteralmond · 01/03/2025 23:08

Melania Trump was born in 1970, name begins with M. Could I be putting 2 and 2 together and making twenty-two?

murasaki · 01/03/2025 23:09

Genuine question @Molly70 , and I'm assuming that you're a republican, do you think Trump was the best pick as leader of the party? I think the candidates for both parties were very very poor and was surprised that that is the best a country of that size has to offer. Was there anyone you think would be handling this better?

@Molly70 can you explain further?

Zelensky's choice of clothing is a calculated decision. He could wear a beautiful suit if he wanted to but if he suddenly switched to formal suits, it might create a disconnect between him and the people enduring war.

It's symbolic of being at war, all in his cabinet wear similar.
I don't know whether that amateur reporter was ignorant of that fact or being facetious.
When war ends the suits will be worn again. It won't even require an announcement as the suits will do the talking.
So imagine the confusion had he donned a suit yesterday. Wrong message!

Italiangreyhound · 01/03/2025 23:10

Trump has only shown himself to be a giant bully.

murasaki · 01/03/2025 23:10

It's semiotics, the clothes matter. Zelensky knows what he's doing.

He could have been using the televised discussions to push for more than had been agreed

But this will also be Russia’s position. Wearing down Ukraine. Both have financial support and weapons being provided by third parties. America have now halted their contributions. Can Europe, or should i say those in Europe currently contributing, really be able to match what Russia is getting from other very powerful and rich countries now America has stepped back? I suspect not.

Wearing down the enemy has worked in Syria -at enormous cost, of course. But Russia has been beaten.

Very interesting post here about Trump and Russia

And re the 'Vance skis in jeans' sign, saw a Bluesky comment about it also being a play on words - the Vanski reference to Russian influence.

Trump was just lightening the mood when he said that. No way would there have been televised discussions if Trump didn’t think Zelinskyyyyyy was on board.

Nah-Trump forgot he wasn’t filming the Apprentice. It wasn’t actually good tv, it was disgraceful. The whole world watched and were appalled at how Zelensky was treated.
Zelensky was right to ask for assurances for the future of his country without greedy Trump just demanding £500billion worth of minerals with no security for their future. All he asked was can we trust that Putin won’t just reinvade my country?

RaspberryVelvet · 01/03/2025 23:11

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 01/03/2025 21:36

Vance was just a rude bully.

I think they had planned to play good cop, bad cop but one of them forgot. Trump was charm itself at the start of the meeting and said Zelensky was dressed “beautifully” - Zelensky was extremely polite as well, until JD started heckling him. I believe he muttered the Ukrainian for “b*tch” a couple of times when JD was speaking, which was extremely restrained of him.

"Quite sad"? I'm enraged.
And the chances of his surviving the war seem slim.
I wish you would have afforded this the dignity of posting it in Politics, instead of just Chat.

murasaki · 01/03/2025 23:13

Zelensky has experienced Putin ignoring previous agreements, why would he believe one Trump promises him?

aurynne · 01/03/2025 23:13

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/03/2025 21:08

It would be great if he wears what he usually wears and King Charles respects him for that.

It would be even better if Charles and William wore a shirt with the Ukrainian trident logo.

Trump has only shown himself to be a giant bully.

What my great-grandmother would have called “a little Hitler” - she lost her 40-year old husband in World War Two. He died fighting the Nazis.

I disagree, it deserves the traffic from here rather than to be hidden away as it affects all of us.

Fully agree with enraged though.

ohfourfoxache · 01/03/2025 22:29

@RaspberryVelvet but it looks like the tariffs are coming regardless?

I know it’s like trying to figure out a toddler tantrum, but I just can’t see any logic behind anything he does

That’s because there is no logic behind anything he does. Just bluster and rudeness. Look at the huge tantrum he threw when Biden won the previous election.

RaspberryVelvet · 01/03/2025 23:20

Llttledrummergirl · 01/03/2025 21:56

While most of this is utter rubbish, this I understand:

In politics, weakness is never forgiven.

A bully is weak.
A person who treats an equal with contempt is weak.
A liar is weak
Someone in need of constant praise and affirmation is weak.
A person who belittles another is weak.
A leader who makes a mockery of diplomatic process is weak.
A leader who offers support and friendship, but at a cost is weak.
A leader who withdraws support from an invaded country, giving it to their enemy is weak.

Trump came out of this weak and without honour. He won't be trusted, and nor will America while he is president and surrounded with sycophants.

Zelensky looks stronger and more statesmanlike. He was calm under pressure and extreme provocation. It's not Zelensky on the back foot.

Trump has done his country a disservice, he wants isolationism, that's what he's going to get. Unless he really is in Putins pocket, which means the whole thing with Zelensky was a set up, and America is a vassal state.

Exactly this.

I am a swing voter and will vote for who I think is the best candidate during any given election cycle. Harris was a big NO but I would consider voting for someone like Mark Kelly if he had been the democratic nominee but he wasn’t because the democrats kept pushing senile Joe Biden on us.

Molly70 · 01/03/2025 23:23

I think that Trump was the best pick out of the republicans to get the base out to vote.

OK, thanks. And I fully agree re the Democrat choices. Neither were going to work at all.

But now we have this. Which is abhorrent and incompetent, rather than just incompetent.
