Zelensky - feeling quite sad

Bakewelltart1 · 01/03/2025 20:18

I know that there are several threads about him, but I’ve watched the interview again today.
I don’t know what’s made me feel more sad - how exhausted and disappointed he looked, the fact that English isn’t his first language and it must have been hard to speak, let alone speak whilst being verbally attacked, or the suit question.
When the war is over, I want to buy that man the best suit money can buy!
How can anyone kick someone when they are so down anyway.

Russia's allies include North Korea, Iran and some African countries. Interesting stories about how that's going.🤔

Don't forget Syria...Putin really knows how to pick his friends.

@ @Pootlemcsmootle I mean for god's sake, to state the bleeding obvious, Putin invaded Ukraine so the only person that can stop the war is him. By stopping his ridiculous invasion.

You're only saying that because you're a sane and rational person 🙄

.................... on the other side of the argument we have Putin and Trump 😬

Don’t forget @Molly70 🙄

Is this satire? Everybody outside of Trump supporters in the US think that he’s an irrational, malignant narcissist and a buffoon. You really need to remove your rose tinted specs, Trump has made the US an international laughing stock, absolutely no one respects them or believes he is a credible leader. He’s a giant, orange idiot.

Ah, so now we’re dabbling in the realm of public opinion. How quaint. Let’s start with this: public perception, particularly in the age of social media, is the cheapest currency in politics. You think the world laughs at Trump? Fine, let them. But laughter and respect are not the same thing. And trust me, respect is earned by those who play the game with cunning, not by those who prance around pretending to be universally adored.

When you’re at the top, it's not about being liked it’s about forcing others to deal with you on your terms. And the world? They may laugh, but they also fall in line. Trade deals, military alliances, strategic positioning Trump may be a "buffoon" in your eyes, but he’s got them negotiating with him, not around him.

You talk about him making the U.S. a laughing stock. You should be more worried about the world laughing with him while secretly scrambling to secure their interests before his next move. Because in the end, the people who laugh hardest are often the ones who fear the most. And as for this "giant, orange idiot" well, he’s the one sitting at the negotiating table.

The game is about control, not popularity.

setmestraightplease · 01/03/2025 22:36

Trump and JD will threaten the rest of the world with tariffs

Ask yourself why do the rest of the world allow them to do this??

It's all posturing,.....
Political manouevering.......
Willy-waving .....

because this is what men do when they're in charge

I've seen how men behave when left to themselves to organise things 😏😳

As I said in my post, it was Zelensky’s public lecturing that derailed the negotiations. There is no Trump/Russia alliance. There is Trump trying to bring Putin to the negotiating table.

Brady Bunch Jan GIF by MOODMAN

Hahaha, oh you’re so funny, ‘there’s no Trump/Russia alliance’ 😂😂 Trump is Putin’s bitch and you seem to be the only one who is unaware of that.

Whoarethoseguys · 01/03/2025 22:40

I feel angry with Trump and his horrific side kick Vance rather than sad.

murasaki · 01/03/2025 22:40

Sandringham for a meeting with KC is an interesting choice. The orange peril will think getting Buck Palace is the big prize, but that's the office. Zelensky is invited to his home, a far more intimate environment. Trump won't see it, but it does show where sympathy lies, I think.

I think you're crediting Trump with far more intelligence and guile than he has. And yes, the world probably should be worried about his next move, but not because it will be strategically brilliant for the US, but because he puts his own interests before anything else and doesn't care what he bulldozes to achieve them. He's not cunning, he's a liability.

Cabella · 01/03/2025 22:44

I was annoyed at (was it) a journalist/reporter who made disparaging comments about Zelensky's attire, but a few days earlier, Elon Musk was in the Oval office wearing a t shirt and baseball cap, looking as high as a kite, and no one said anything. I despair of people sucking up to EL just because he's the world's richest man, so what?

You really believe what you’re saying don’t you, bless you! The good old US of A runs the entire world and we all dance to your tune eh? The only person running the US right now is a Russian bloke called Putin.

Have you not seen the scorn on the faces of world leaders when they meet your great orange moron? When they have to sit and listen to his nonsensical word salad, his ramblings about sharks and wind turbines and water? He’s an idiot who has damaged your country more than you clearly realise, but you carry on with your sneering and your bully boy tactics, we are laughing at you, not with you.

Llttledrummergirl · 01/03/2025 22:46

Rosesducks · 01/03/2025 22:32

Ah, I see the bravado now lashing out in defense of a position too fragile to withstand a little scrutiny. Let's break this down, shall we?

A bully with power is still a bully? Sure, if you’re looking at power through the lens of morality. But power, real power, doesn’t care about your feelings. It doesn’t need to be liked. It just needs to be feared or respected. And Trump understands that distinction all too well.

What you mistake for weakness is, in fact, the most potent form of strength, transactional dominance. When you force others to negotiate with you, you don’t lose leverage you create it.

As for other countries stepping up well, that’s exactly the game Trump is playing. He doesn’t need to dictate the terms to everyone. He just needs to make sure the stakes are high enough for those who depend on American support. It’s not about being the king of the world it’s about being the one who holds the cards.

No need to pretend we’re friends; I don’t need your camaraderie to make my point. We’re simply two players in a game of chess, and right now, you’re playing catch-up.

I think you'll find real power doesn't come from fear. Fear doesn't engender respect.

Transactional dominance- truly scraping the barrel. Trump will turn lives into money.

As a pp said, it's farcical.

I don't mean to be unkind, but I think the OP has a fair bit of projection in it, I'm sure he's made of tougher stuff than that - they all are, they didn't get into positions of huge power by being thin skinnned.

Well Trump has the thinnest skin and has become president twice,
Unfortunately.

DeffoNeedANameChange · 01/03/2025 22:48

Apologies, I haven't RTFT but if you get a moment you should have a quick look at Zelenskyy's twitter feed from today (I know, I know, Musk - but it's worth it). It's just page upon page of leaders conveying their support for Zelenskyy, and him thanking every single one of them. Very powerful.

Whoarethoseguys · 01/03/2025 22:49

Molly70 · 01/03/2025 20:39

I don’t think that meeting was the time and place for Zelensky to start lecturing Trump and Vance. He called Vance, JD, which was very disrespectful. Trump ribbed him about his attire when he greeted him but it was a journalist who brought it up in the meeting. Zelinsky was there to sign the mineral agreement and he should have stuck to that and discussed other concerns privately. It was Trump and Vance who were ambushed

Why should he sign the agreement on Trump's terms? He had a perfect right to ask for assurances about what he would get back in return.
The only disrespectful people were Trump and Vance , talking over and shouting to the leader if a country that has been invaded. They were absolutely disgraceful.

Control in the short term. But the USA no longer has unconditional economic power. It is more and more reliant on soft power and shared values.

Trump is destroying that. The USAs allies are realising they need to stop relying on the USA, and quickly. The USAs clients that they are dropping are being picked up by China, which is more than willing to buy influence as the USA withdraws funding.

Ukraine is the immediate victim, agreed. But ultimately the USA is writing itself out of global dominance.

A strong alliance will always have more power than each actor - however powerful - acting individually.

Because these negotiations have been going on behind closed doors for weeks and they should have stayed behind closed doors.

This afternoon, as crowds of people cheered Zelensky into 10 Downing Street, he called the British Prime Minister “Keir.” He then corrected himself but left off the Sir. For goodness’ sake, English is his third of fourth language. He can’t remember every honorific of every politician he meets.

Do you think Sir Keir Starmer felt disrespected? I don’t. He had a chair for Zelensky with a Ukrainian flag behind it, and a chair for himself with a Union Jack behind it. That shows respect to the leader of a country that has been bombed relentlessly for over three years.

I am a British citizen and I don’t care if he calls the King Charles tomorrow, without the King part.
Yes - we have an actual King here. Not a fake one.

Now that I know JD is considered disrespectful, I will be sure to use it consistently in future, because I had zero respect for him before yesterday and his behaviour in that meeting lowered my respect to about minus 30. JD it is.

You’re very welcome to call our King Charles, or Charlie. Whatever makes you happy. Because let me tell you, Trump and JD are making a whole lot of Republican voters very unhappy. Every leader in Europe has stood by Zelensky. Trump and JD brought shame on America yesterday.

Finally we agree on something. And who's idea was it not to keep it behind closed doors? That's right: it was Trump's.

But they didn't and that was Trump's decision no one elses. And at no point did Ukraine say they has come to an agreement.
Trump and Vance were bullying Zelensky to give away some of Ukraine's natural assets a country that has already been decimated by war. And they decided to do it in public.
