....then it has just started on Film 4.

Enemy Mine. About an astronaut and a male alien who collide in space and crash land on a planet. The male alien turns out to be pregnant and they co-exist on some hostile planet or other.

Really shite.

Love you. Those video nights were amazing weren't they.

Do you remember Legend? I do hope you do, same year 1985.

Tom Cruise. One of the earliest Ridley Scott films and in my opinion one of the most underrated films ever. Ridley Scott takes you to places. This is one of those films, a couple of decades before Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven etc.

The forest, the waterfalls, the horses - all in a studio. In the opening scene, the cottage kitchen, the garden, all that sunlight casting rays across the baking, the fire, the ambience. No one does places like Ridley Scott. Then the undercroft of the devil, all those dark pillars and Mia Sara as Lili.

This film is so important in my view, being the foundation of some of the perfectionism and quality in direction that we are able to reap now.

Loved going to the video shop to pick out films, as did my kids when they were younger. They were much more discerning taking out things like Kikis Delivery Service so very many times.

Legend was a great film! I loved Tom Cruise back then, went three times to see Top Gun in the cinema.

IAmTheLittleThings · 03/03/2025 18:10

Just remembered (unfortunately) another corkingly shite film.
Sawney : Flesh of Man.
I'm fascinated by the legend but fuck me that's a pile of steaming turd. 😂

janj52301 · 03/03/2025 19:47

I love Howard the Duck

Just saying, to make it clear. Legend created the wide space that allowed films to take us back to historic places. With Tangerine Dream, Hans Zimmer or Whoever. It brings us back to what we all need. Watch the film and be transported.

God bless you, Sir Ridley. This is what you do.

I am bowing out of this thread now. Thank you all.

Follow your dreams.

That does sound rubbish. I'll pass.

Locke with Tom Hardy

Just him talking on speakerphone to various people while he's driving. Watched the whole sodding thing to the end just desperately waiting for something mildly dramatic to happen to make up for such a slow tedious build-up. But it never happened. It was just a film where Tom talked to people while driving in his car.

Boring as fuck

OH HI MARK.

Yes! Sounds like cinematic gold 😉

Zardoz, starring Sean Connery.

You've done some bad photoshopping and put Sean Connery in Borat's mankini. I cannot believe that is an actual movie!

This tells you everything you need to know about Zardoz, and it’s way more entertaining than the movie itself.

Boxing Helena?

theDudesmummy · 05/03/2025 13:23

I'd forgotten Boxing Helena! That was terrible. See also (or rather don't): Eating Raoul

I need to see Zardoz now. 😂

ChopstickNovice · 05/03/2025 13:38

To Kill A King. I left the cinema after half an hour.

OH HI MARK.

The acting in the Room is astonishingly bad.

Another shite film, Field of Dreams. "Build it they will come", knew of its premise, and when I finally got round to seeing it I've never been as disappointed in a film. Bored to tears.

Not the worst film, but overrated from my first viewing, The Princess Bride. Having heard so much about it and read its excellent reviews I expected a classic, instead I was like WTF? He (Rob Reiner) is a great director and I love his body of work, but that fell flat. Maybe I'd need to see it again and see If i went in with too high an expectation so would appreciate it more.

Watched an hour of Gladiator II and after much boredom and a deja vu feeling just felt this is a second rate version of the first one. Paused it and haven't yet got round to finishing it (maybe it finishes well?).

FranticFrankie · 06/03/2025 11:37

Moulin Rouge
Rugrats in Paris

Yeah Princess Bride seems to be quite marmite, some say it’s the best film ever. I didn’t particularly like it.

Field of Dreams was one of my votes too. I honestly don't understand the appeal. We were waiting for something to happen but it never did.

From my experience "Field of Nightmares" as we called it at school is a boys' film. I saw it in a group and all the boys were "wow!" and all the girls were like "well the kid they picked up on the way back to the field was nice, but otherwise whaaaaa???".

Rottweilermummy · 06/03/2025 22:37

August, Osage County, and eat pray love. Though I love Julia Roberts, those are 2 films that I have wasted time watching, when i could have been watching paint dry lol

Iridescentdragon · 06/03/2025 22:41

Sausage party 🤮
The only film I can remember refusing to watch more than 10 minutes of. Utter garbage

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 06/03/2025 22:46

@Iridescentdragon

I saw it in the cinema, I had mind bleached it til you mentioned it!

Gotback · 06/03/2025 23:04

The Oxford Murders. Utter shite. Actually made me quite angry, it was such relentless tripe.

catsareme14 · 06/03/2025 23:16

Does anyone remember a terrible arty film about a young woman hitchhiking, she had a thumb that was about about ten inches long . I've blocked out the rest of the 'plot '

Even Cowgirls get the Blues. The book is pretty good but too strange to translate well to screen.
