Do you know a lottery winner...? Or have u won a substantial prize?

I was thinking with the amount of people on mumsnet, that some of us should know people who have won a big prize on the lotto/euromillions/euro raffle/set for life/scratchcards etc? I do and they won tens of millions.. fantastic!

I never used to play but started to a couple weeks ago mainly the set for life, I did play the valentines euro and won 11.30 for 2 numbers and both lucky stars.. bit disappointed with the amount but it's better than nothing I suppose 😉 but I did expect more for getting 4 numbers.

What did they do with their winnings? How are they now? Did they disappear? Or still around?

Maybe some of us have been lucky enough to win big..? I haven't unfortunately.. but would love for people to share their stories if there are any lucky winners on here? 😂 what is the most you have won? And how?

Our next door neighbours won £100k on a radio giveaway! Can’t lie that I wasn’t jealous but they’re genuinely very deserving of the prize - honestly couldn’t have gone to a lovelier, more hardworking couple. They are both trainee paediatric doctors. They took a nice holiday and built a gorgeous big extension with the money.

jiskoot · 26/02/2025 20:16

Our old neighbours won it not long after it started, just over a million £ from memory. We had no clue until they went out and bought 2 brand new Skodas and mentioned it casually to us. They bought each of their three children and themselves a house in the same town and moved out not long after. The father sadly died about a year later of a heart attack. We haven't seen or heard from any of them since (unsurprisingly!).

CottonCandyCrank · 26/02/2025 20:21

Awe lovely! So lucky 🍀 I tried the heart radio one before and after the closing time I got a message from provider stating the message couldn't send as I have it set to not spend money outside of the allowance 🤣 I think if I was ever gonna win, I would have won that day 😂

Gotta admit I was slightly jealous of the winners I know of but like your neighbours, lovely people and very well deserved! They disapeared so God knows what they are up to now.. but I bet their life is amazing.. or I hope it is!

I feel sorry for the ones who struggle with it all.. it must be hard to deal with for some people. Especially HUGE winners

Nope, never heard of anyone I know win big in all the years it's been running.

CottonCandyCrank · 26/02/2025 20:25

@jiskoot awe that's sad! You mean the father (as in the winner) died? 😪 I think if I won I'd disapear to.. and i would stay anonymous for sure 🤣

A colleague about 20yrs ago won £250k on the premium bonds

HhalloNine · 26/02/2025 20:26

Nope!

Do have a big house in our village, supposedly built by a lottery winner. They moved in, then out again as they hadn't settled in a new area.

I've just read the novel by Adele Parkes about a lottery winner. Good fun, but gave me pause for thought.

jmh740 · 26/02/2025 20:27

I won 240k in a court case I used it to buy a house its great being mortgage free especially after oh was diagnosed with a long term medical condition and had to give up work.

But I'd rather have not had to go through the trauma that got me to court and having to travel 300 miles to London for a week away from oh and kids and go through the case

Hazel665 · 26/02/2025 20:28

I knew someone who won the pools back in the 80s (for those of you too young to know what the pools were, it was a bit like the lottery but you predicted football results).

She left her husband and moved to Greece.

CottonCandyCrank · 26/02/2025 20:29

@JacqFrost it's strange isn't it. I think that's why alot of people think it's a scam. You would expect the majority of people to know someone or know of someone to win etc. With the length of time it's been going and the amount of winners that have won, ranging from all the different ones that are run as mentioned plus these other sites that now run big comps, wining cars/cash/motor homes etc. Like I say I do know someone, but thought more people would too 🤔

@jmh740 sorry you had to go through that and to hear of your oh being unwell! Big hugs 🫂 At least, like you say you don't have the worry of the mortgage being paid, so that's gives you some financial freedom! I guess money can't buy your health generally 🥺 be wonderful if it could though

My neighbour won £450k on a horse race.

CottonCandyCrank · 26/02/2025 20:37

@LePetitMaman I really need to start looking into these premium bonds.. you dont lose the money you put in with a chance to win big.. can't lose I guess 🙌

@Hazel665 good ol' pools! you just reminded me.. my grandparents won pools back in the day and i think they bought a house and spent the rest.. I think it was about 100k 🙌

My neighbour won £450k on a horse race.

Blimey.. didn't realise this type of money could be won on horse racing.. did they have to put 1000s at stake?

Many years ago we had neighbours who moved in next door after winning the lottery. Don't remember how much they won but it was a few million. They divided the money up between parents and siblings and bought three houses on our street.

After buying three houses outright and all giving up work the money was gone pretty quickly and within a few years all the houses were sold because the money had run out. Don't know what happened to them after that but I imagine they downsized and found jobs again.

A colleagues parents won £1m on lotto a few years ago.

I have no idea. They won some years ago, way before I lived here.
When we moved in, my husband passed a comment about their "nice motorhome" and she told us that's where it had come from. And the little place they own in France. It didn't feel right to ask for the details to be honest.

GG1986 · 26/02/2025 20:50

I know someone who won 1 million on a scratchcard on Christmas eve years ago.

It was the kind of story that when it happened EVERYONE talked about it!

CatteryCatss · 26/02/2025 20:53

My step sister won £10k, but I feel too cheeky to ask what she has spent it on!

NotTheDebtDoctorWithTheHungryScalpel · 26/02/2025 20:55

I know 2 people who have won the lotto.

One I met after he won, and lost it all, he now works a factory job near me, says he's never been happier, had a fun few years apparently.

Another won, messed up his marriage, went off with a family member of his wife and is deeply unhappy now and doesn't speak to his kids or grandkids at all. Haven't seen him for years actually.

Poppymeldrum · 26/02/2025 20:56

A friend was invited to a lotto winners party
(I think her then boyfriend knew the lady rather than the bloke)
They won a million, threw a party, gave up their jobs, bought a house and blew the lot within the year-from what I can gather,it went on the house, holidays and tat
They broke up not long after the money ran out
