Tell me some things you buy in your weekly shop that I might not

Just thinking of all the thousands of things in the supermarket, and I end up chucking the same things in my online shop every week just out of habit. So there must be things other people chuck in that I never do! I promise to add some of them to my shop this week and try them!

Big fan of frozen veg here, green beans are my favourite for turning freezer food into something a bit healthier.

In the spirit of the responses I will also throw in a recommendation for frozen shallots rather than onions - much tastier and more expensive, can't seem to get them anywhere other than Ocado. The Tesco frozen onions often have a bitter taste.

Also agree re parathas. Tesco is the only place I can find these

A friend recently told me about an app called Yuka. You use it to scan the barcode of all your supermarket products and it then gives you a rating to show how healthy (or not) the product is.

Sadly Geeta's mango chutney shows as 'poor'!

Sometimes it recommends healthier alternatives.

Mysteriously when I first scanned Geeta's chutney it recommended lots of M&S chutneys as being more healthy but looking at it now it says it doesn't have any alternative chutney recommendations.

Lark's liver
Organic four leafed clover for salad
Zebra hooves for a delicious broth
Himalayan pygmy goat's milk
Gecko tongues

RosesAndHellebores · 25/02/2025 10:43

Pink Himalayan salt
Anchovy stuffed olives
Marigold Bouillion
High quality, high welfare meat

Milodon · 25/02/2025 10:45

Watercress - I get through several bags a week, I use it as an alternative to morning glory cooked Vietnamese style
Wensleydale
Avocado oil
Potato cakes
Coconut collab gut health yoghurt
Coconut milk blocks (instead of tins so you can control the thickness)

Also quite a lot of beans/pulses, my most common purchases are butter beans (I have them in a wrap for lunch, or with pesto pasta), chickpeas (for hummus and curry), fava beans (for ful medames) and pinto beans (for refried beans) but we’ve got at least a dozen different ones in the cupboard

Butternut squash as I make the yummiest soup every week.
Daffodils this time of year.
Stir fry (veg, noodles and protein) is my latest food obsession
Grapefruit juice.

Tins of anchovies…..I add these the every savory dish I make!
Carbochons with chili …I get them to add to salad but invariably eat them straight from the jar
Capers….see anchovies above, yep I add them to almost everything!

ssd · 25/02/2025 10:58

We should do a Heron/Morrison’s/Lidl version. For Heron i keep an eye out in the chilled section, often Rachel’s yogurts, the crab pate dh likes(half the price of Sainsbury’s) and last time they also had chicken liver pate which was so good I neglected to tell dh about it. He also (being a pleb) likes the Mayflower frozen chips and curry sauce. And tge lucky dip of their unbranded frozen stuff. Tesco’s gf corned beef hash and cheese crisp bakes. 6 for the same price of 2.

We dont have Heron up here in Glasgow, is it like asda?

Daffodils are lovely but such a waste of money. There are masses about to bloom outside that won't get thrown away after a week.

I bought myself a daffodil print a few years ago, I move it to a prominent spring time position for a few weeks every year 😁

Carriemac · 25/02/2025 11:20

Shanas frozen paratha - 2 mins in a frying pan goes with any curry as a side

And Barry's tea of course would not drink anything else

offmynut · 25/02/2025 11:52

I live out the polish corner shop about £40 a fortnight.

CeffylCoch · 25/02/2025 12:29

Mini wraps - we heat them in a cast iron pan for a warm soft taco 🌮
Cottage cheese with onion & chive (Longley farm - not as watery as the others)
Traditional lemonade
Dandelion & burdock
Sweet & salted popcorn (small packets only 60 calories)
Kiwi 🥝 to scoop out with a teaspoon

lucindalucinsa · 25/02/2025 12:37

Burrata
Olives
Smoked salmon
Lemons
Avocados
Fresh herbs
French bread that I make into crostini

rosemole · 25/02/2025 12:48

@Blubbles but that's how I shop - sorry if it's not helpful to you. I buy whole foods mostly and cook a lot at home - I buy fruit/veg, meat, fish, butter, milk, grains, oats, flour etc.
It's harder work but that's the way I do it.

BunnyLake · 25/02/2025 13:33

Cattery · 25/02/2025 09:29

Yeh, so I’ll chuck in cat litter and some Tesco pork sausages

I’ve started buying own brand cola. I quite like a glass of coke occasionally but would only buy the branded (Pepsi). I bought Asda Cola and I really can't tell that much of a difference, certainly not enough to justify the price difference. 70p vs £2.15. That’s my more downmarket purchase.

Dunn's River Cock Seasoning.

DH wasn't keen on trying it at first, but happily uses it now as I love it.

River cock?

LillyPJ · 25/02/2025 14:09

Celery. I hate running out of it.

MonickerMonica · 25/02/2025 14:09
