Tell me some things you buy in your weekly shop that I might not

Just thinking of all the thousands of things in the supermarket, and I end up chucking the same things in my online shop every week just out of habit. So there must be things other people chuck in that I never do! I promise to add some of them to my shop this week and try them!

I’m the same, getting pretty much the same old items every week. I’ve taken a look at my latest pending Tesco basket and I’ve got a haggis in there! (I don’t live in Scotland). It’s because I’ve been watching a Scottish food YouTuber.

Things I put in sometimes but are not the regular old basics:

tinned coconut milk
kimchi (have to rinse a bit though as a bit tangy)
non-alcoholic beer
gyozas
sausage rolls (suddenly get a taste for them)

Frozen cherries, frozen blueberries. Much cheaper than fresh, and make a nice little sweet snack.

itsu crispy seaweed thins. Tasty as a snack, and almost zero calories!

We should do a Heron/Morrison’s/Lidl version. For Heron i keep an eye out in the chilled section, often Rachel’s yogurts, the crab pate dh likes(half the price of Sainsbury’s) and last time they also had chicken liver pate which was so good I neglected to tell dh about it. He also (being a pleb) likes the Mayflower frozen chips and curry sauce. And tge lucky dip of their unbranded frozen stuff. Tesco’s gf corned beef hash and cheese crisp bakes. 6 for the same price of 2.

God, this is much better😁

We get the big packs from Costco. Their they're own brand, and much cheaper!

This is all terribly middle class!

Yeh, so I’ll chuck in cat litter and some Tesco pork sausages

Georgyporky · 25/02/2025 09:39

Dunn's River Cock Seasoning.

DH wasn't keen on trying it at first, but happily uses it now as I love it.

Multi-packs of sesame snaps from the international food aisle, the ones that are sesame seeds stuck together with sugar syrup.

Gifflar cinnamon rolls

Mama instant noodles, ‘kimchi’ flavour (they don’t really taste of kimchi), with half a bag of stir fry veg it’s my new favourite wfh lunch.

Geeta mango chutney. When we have curry takeaway I put some in a little pot instead of getting the restaurant mango chutney.

Geeta's mango chutney is a the GOAT 👌🏼

This thread is full of quite possibly THE most middle class replies I’ve ever read 😂

Chopped herring - a Jewish-style spread made from herring, boiled egg and various other things. Great on bagels and matzo
Couscous for tagines
Apricots also for tagine, but they are good in porridge too
Fullers Earth cat litter for the furry twosome
Brinjal (aubergine) pickle
Snowdonia Black Bomber cheddar.

GameOfJones · 25/02/2025 09:49

For the rhubarb yoghurt lovers, Longley Farm are the best I've tried. Just milk, rhubarb and sugar. I'm also addicted to their hazelnut yoghurt.

Someone asked about frozen veg (sorry, can't remember who). If making a cottage pie I'd just chuck it in straight from frozen when I was browning the mince. By the time it was fried for a bit and then baked in the oven it would be cooked through. It's definitely increased my vegetable intake as there is no waste and it doesn't go off.

sashh · 25/02/2025 09:52

Not every week but sort of on a rotation.

Sauerkraut
Smoked sausage
Chicken livers - chicken liver pate is really easy to make
Campbell's condensed mushroom soup - I put it in the slow cooker with crème fraiche, mushrooms and chicken. Day one I eat it with crunchy potatoes (roast, croquet or occasionally chips) then I put a pastry top on what's left and freeze for a dinner later.
Beef, Pork & Red Wine Ragu Cappellacci from Sainsbury's

@IdaPrentice

Gnocchi is easy to make.

Next time you make a potato bake a few extra and leave to cool.

When you are ready take the flesh out of the skin and mash, then add flour in about a 1:10 ratio of flour to potato. Mix together and then form in to a sausage shape and cut in to pieces. Put in boiling water and when they float they are cooked.

DazzlingCuckoos · 25/02/2025 09:53

Bit of a random one, but the M&S Chicken Stock Paste in a jar is really good for sauces.

Seaweed crisps
Quail eggs
Vegan cheese (it's vile but DS has a dairy allergy)
Olive bread
Bamba peanut puffs

The best vegan cheese I've come across is by La Fauxmagerie, called Brixton Blue. Their Camemvert (sic) is also quite good, but I didn't much like the hard smoked one they do. I found these in a health food shop and more recently have seen them in Waitrose

Sunglow1921 · 25/02/2025 09:55

Blueberries and raspberries (toddler can eat own weight in berries 😂)
Birdseye cod fish fingers
Shana frozen paratha
Sparkling water

Fupoffyagrasshole · 25/02/2025 09:57

We’ve started buying the just roll
pizza bases and been having a regular pizza night at home ! My 3 year old makes all the pizzas and it’s a really fun activity as well as being dinner 🤣🤣

Me and DH love the M&S mango chutney

sashh · 25/02/2025 09:58

@Tortielady Are the apricots dried?

If you soak a few in water overnight they plump up, they look a bit like egg yolks. Then you can stuff them with whatever you like, I tend to use brie, then wrap in streaky bacon and bake in the oven for 10 mins for a variation or devils' on horseback.

UnwantedOpinionBelow · 25/02/2025 00:23

Shanas frozen paratha
Dunns River jerk seasoning
Almond flour
Catsan

Shanas frozen paratha are better than any I've ever had in an Indian restaurant

Last week I bought a packet of Jam Mallows Biscuits

I have not had them years

I’m going back to the shop (slightly out of the way) to buy another pack or two

Ahh those have bough back some memories, I used to love them. Where are they selling them? I just might have to treat myself.

Keeponkeepigon · 25/02/2025 10:08

Tim’s Dairy Rhubarb Yoghurt is my favourite.

Leckford flour from Waitrose makes the best home made bread.

Stopped buying Burford Brown Eggs - as they aren’t as fresh anymore.

Lots of ginger to make Dishoom’s Chai - I make a batch, put it in the fridge and then warm some through in the velvetiser. Great with an almond croissant.

Yes. Frozen cherries and blueberries were a game changer for me. I just chuck them into overnight oats frozen and by morning they are perfect.
I've also recently discovered frozen mango chunks.

You have not tasted my chutney.

LollyWillow · 25/02/2025 10:18

I've made a note of M&S stock in a jar and Just Roll pizza bases.
This is an excellent thread OP

Preciousssssss · 25/02/2025 10:20

Brown Cow Organics Greek Style Yoghurt. It’s the only ‘Greek’ yoghurt I’ve tasted in the UK that actually has a taste.

Fresh turmeric (roots). Use it in every possible thing - so my fingertips are always stained yellow like an old fashioned tobacco smoker.

(Both ordered with the weekly Riverford veg box.)

slug · 25/02/2025 10:24

Whatever's in the reduced to clear section in Tescos.

It's just DH and I now so we find getting through veg before it goes off a bit difficult. So the discovery of frozen whole leaf spinach (how did I not know about this before?) and lately frozen podded edaname beans has been a game changer
