I think I've just hit a Trumpian new low after having read that he pulled the funding to track the abducted Ukrainian children back in January. Dick

TheNuthatch · 19/03/2025 09:37

Yes, I noticed Timms wouldn't commit to no further cuts. The tories will vote in favour so it probably won't matter if a bunch of labour mps rebel.
I'm fine with reducing welfare, but it needs to be done carefully. Not rushed through to save Reeves. I wonder how many more departments will be sacrificed at the alter of this disastrous budget.

Yes it’s economic incompetence, from Reeves and Starmer. £9bn wiped out £6bn trying to be clawed back.

The gaslighting around doing people a favour by cutting their support is ridiculous.

Although they’ve been pushing the gaslighting stuff for a while on all policies it really is stark to see it wrt welfare cuts.

EasternStandard · 21/03/2025 09:50

What’s the point in pushing up borrowing this much and wiping out headroom?

More debt servicing, more cuts.

Upstartled · 21/03/2025 10:11

There doesn't seem to be much in the way of good financial news nowadays, is there? Tax receipts have been £11bn lower than the forecast for the year and borrowing costs have been £20bn higher. And the employer's ni increases haven't even kicked in yet.

I don't think the axe falling in the spring statement will be the last of it.

twistyizzy · 21/03/2025 10:50

How anyone can still support Labour is beyond me at this moment

EasternStandard · 21/03/2025 10:53

Yeh same @twistyizzy

So does Reeves have an clue there’s an issue here yet?

Or Starmer for that matter. He’s just as culpable.

Looking at @Upstartledfigures do they think it will turn around somehow? They can’t have wanted or expected this, so they got their policies wrong

TheNuthatch · 21/03/2025 12:28

I think we're all supposed to pretend it's not happening, and focus on Starmer standing on a submarine 🙄.

I agree with pp that this won't be the end of the cuts. The NI increase hasn't even kicked in yet so things are set to get worse.

Another story about recruitment freezes. National Trust facing an extra £10m labour costs. It's telling that all of these reports we post are from the Guardian!

Because Labour supporters will only accept links from Guardian 😆 Wonder if they are still in denial because TG is posting more and more critical stories of the shit show that is Labour

Yes that’s why he’s standing on a submarine 😆

The only thing left.

Although the whole war mongering stuff is very irritating, he’s not in the negotiations and it’s ridiculous posturing rn. I have to filter it out as it’s just so bad.

And yes The Guardian is more critical these days.

Upstartled · 21/03/2025 14:55

Bit worrying to see the concerns about the Heathrow fire being an act of terrorism build more credence as the day goes on.

twistyizzy · 21/03/2025 15:12

Heard on R4 that we are in debt to tune of 100% of GDP now.

TheNuthatch · 21/03/2025 15:26

@twistyizzy At least when Truss fucked up, the tories got rid of her, and scrapped her budget. Labour need to do the same. Instead we get austerity 2.0 and Captain Pugwash on a sub.

I wonder if Reeves will take a chainsaw to the house on Wednesday?

Tories are generally a lot quicker to respond yes. That KS is doggedly sticking to RR, BP etc could ultimately make him look even weaker + more ineffective.

EasternStandard · 21/03/2025 15:54

It’s interesting that Truss took the main fall for a mini budget and Starmer looks like he does sub photo ops to distance.

They both are culpable. And the worst thing is the cabinet will prop each other up so unlike last gov that corrected the fiscal stuff pdq we have this for years.

TheNuthatch · 21/03/2025 19:35

I'm just about to watch the last episode of Adolescence tonight. Thanks for the recommendation @Parsley1234
It's brilliant, but terrifying when you've got teen dc isn't it! The last one with the psychiatrist was 😱.

Let's hope it's not terrorism, but it certainly shows vulnerabilities.

Well if Ireland do move to the right, I hope they find a better candidate than him.
