It's maddening, he's said it so many times.

He's likely listening to Starmer and co do their domestic planes and troops speeches and expecting more.

It's not likely. After today hopefully he'll understand politicians are not being honest. You see on here some who believe Europe is about to step in.

Reading this shows what could be happening on expectations, apols for big chunk o text.

--
'He’ll be seeking cast-iron guarantees of military support and perhaps enhanced intelligence sharing to plug the gaps left by Washington’s decision to halt aid.
But much to his disappointment, Mr Zelensky will only receive warm words of assurance and some vague promises around security guarantees.
EU leaders have decided it’s too soon, and “premature”, to discuss troop deployments.
Instead, they’ll explain that the bloc best sees Ukraine being defended by itself with the help of weapons deliveries and training from its Western allies.
“Achieving ‘peace through strength’ requires Ukraine to be in the strongest possible position, with Ukraine’s own robust military and defence capabilities as an essential component,” a leaked draft of a statement to be signed off by EU leaders, seen by the Telegraph, says.
“This applies before, during and after negotiations to end the war.”

So, kind words, weapons and training. No assurances about boots on the ground. How is any of this different to a fortnight ago before the shtf? Another Ents meeting, Nuthatch.

EasternStandard · 06/03/2025 12:30

@Upstartled exactly so what were Starmer and co thinking with all the boots / planes rhetoric?

Best case scenario is they haven't blown the deal on the table. Worst case they have and Ukraine is left as is, which is too much to contemplate.

TheNuthatch · 06/03/2025 12:30

Yes, Ents indeed.

If the French sign up to that, that means they are out of the peacekeeping force pact with the UK. So where does that leave Starmer?

If that document below has been signed then that's a major group out.

Oddly just above that the 'Coalition of the Willing' plan limps on, so maybe it's separate.

Starmer's take is... concerning.

Upstartled · 06/03/2025 13:00

Trump to revoke legal status for quarter of a million Ukrainians.

Jesus wept.
Just when you think it can't get any worse, there's another announcement.

On a lighter note, I hope you're all enjoying some glorious sunshine today ☀
I've just had my lunch break in the garden without needing a coat. The dogs are sunbathing, and the washing is already dry. Joy.

The farmer has just fertilised his nearby field with something particularly pungent so me and the washing are hiding indoors. 😁

The gov press releases are transparent

EU summit if topping headlines would make it clear no troops and planes are about to match Starmer and Macron's boots rhetoric

So the '20 countries could..' gets wheeled out.

On another note Russia has rejected temporary ceasefire.

Rutte think US / Ukraine deal could still happen.

Yes glorious day, so nice in the garden.

Upstartled · 06/03/2025 16:54

Trump is considering changing his participation with NATO, such that the US will only come to the aid if fellow members of they contribute a minimum gdp percentage.

He has this particular knack for monetising the shit out of everything.

I guess we should be grateful that each nation doesn't have to report back to Elon about what they did last week.

EasternStandard · 06/03/2025 18:09

Ha @Upstartled

TheNuthatch · 06/03/2025 19:42

@Parsley1234 Are you still around? Haven't seen you on MN for a while.

Some movement on a plan, fingers crossed.

Mr Zelensky said the truce would be a “prologue” to a full peace settlement backed up by security guarantees from Kyiv’s Western allies.
The first discussions on the plan will be held between Steve Witkoff, the US Middle East envoy, Marco Rubio, the secretary of state, and Mike Waltz, the national security adviser, and Andriy Yermak, Mr Zelensky’s chief of staff, on Tuesday next week.

Parsley1234 · 06/03/2025 23:17

@TheNuthatch hello ! I am still here I just have nothing to add I don’t understand what’s going on I still can’t stand Starmer or any of the front bench. It’s just a massive rotation of doom I had supper with the gay lawyers Sunday night and we were in a unanimous decision that a decade ago things were so much bloody easier peaceful hopeful it’s just rubbish p

TheNuthatch · 08/03/2025 10:04

Good morning, happy weekend 😊
I'm having a break from all the Trump news. It's just too depressing.

@TheNuthatch same just all news atm. Changing radio when it comes on.

See what happens with Z etc

EasternStandard · 08/03/2025 10:17

Accidentally posted, see what happens this week.

Lovely weather. Enjoy

Upstartled · 08/03/2025 10:55

Yes, fast approaching my limit of how much interest I can invest in something that I can't change. Maybe it's the stark contrast to the better weather but I'm out of patience with it for it for now.

TheNuthatch · 08/03/2025 11:54

Labour have already started briefing out doom and gloom in advance of the spring statement. They will no doubt bombard us with bad news to make the statement itself seem more palatable when it comes.
There will be plenty of domestic stuff to get our teeth into in the coming weeks.

I feel much better since I tuned out of all the Trump noise.
